Esperanza Rising

Happy Birthday! Tomorrow is my birthday the flowers are blooming; the cattle are

running in the fields. Mama and Papa are happy together. Life is perfect here. As the sun sets on

the last day of her seventh birthday everything changes. With Papa now gone Mama and

Esperanza are not going to be able to fend for themselves in 1930 Mexico. That is not how things

are done. Finding no better option Mama, Esperanza and her young sister run away to depression

era California. On the way new struggles appear in the way of the new small family. Finally

getting work the small family go to work in the fields. This is a whole new world for them.

Esperanza starts working with the children of the landowner and thanks for her couldn't get any

lower. Or so she thought. During this time Mama started getting sick. In this time Esperanza

does her best to take care of Mama. but she can't help but think about all the things and people

she left behind in Mexico. As Mama finally started getting better Esperanza realized all the

things that she had learned in this journey to this new country and since she had been here she

developed the skill for crafting blankets. As Mama was getting better and the blanket was getting

finished Esperanza's best friend came back with the greatest gift for her next birthday. Abuela

got to come to California and live with Esperanza and her small family. In the end this book is

about a journey, a family, and hope.
