MY LEVEL OF ANXIETY IN LEARNING ENGLISH AND MY ACTIONS TO

MANAGE MY SITUATION.

ANXIETY is a well known term in medical science. It means an emotional distress or

uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune or fear of failure. To me, anxious

means the feeling that can make our adrenalin run all over the body and make us sweat, worry,

fear and panic. It is said as negative feeling. I feel very anxious thinking of the JUE300 English

course compared to any other courses that I have to attend during my PPPJJ program. Other

courses are conducted in Bahasa Melayu, so I sometimes feel a little anxious when it is tough but

not as much anxious as I feel for the JUE courses.

The scariest part of learning English is speaking in English! I feel nervous and uneasy

when I have to speak in English. I tend to be quiet in my English course.

I have difficulties to speak in English because I am already poor in that language. I never

feel confident while speaking. Furthermore it is only a second language learned in the school and

never used it in the daily life. Most of the time the words I used are wrong and my pronunciation

is always funny to others. This makes me even shy. I feel worst during the presentation because

marks will be awarded and it carries high percentage of my overall grade for the paper.

I have tried many ways to reduce the anxiety in me by overcoming my weakness. I make

it a habit to read newspapers or other reading materials in English everyday at least for five

minutes. I memorize simple and common dialogues of social expressions and practice them with

my friends. It helps me to build my confidence to speak English in public. I also enroll myself in

any English courses offered outside like the Community College in my place. I am willing to

learn. I continuously work towards to improve my proficiency in English.

Anxiety in certain level is common and can be managed. I have very high level of anxiety

in JUE courses. I am taking some measures to overcome my anxiety. I don’t focus on my

feelings of fear or worry but on my determination on how to do better.

I can see that most of my coursemates are also having anxiety about this course. This makes me

feel better and motivates me to compete with them. In my opinion, the anxiety in me is actually

helping me to realize my weaknesses; the reasons for the weaknesses and the ways to do better in

the course through my actions.
