Reflection

2020 International Nursing Conference was definitely gave us, nursing students, an opportunity
to acquire new set of ideas in approaching our patients in modern nursing care with the help of
highly advanced technologies. Among the six speakers with different topics, one has captured
my attention the most is the Innovative Nursing Care Practices In varied Settings that was
shared by Rizalina Bonuel. It is about taking care the patients with modern nursing practices,
instead of using traditional nursing practices and setting only, today’s nursing practice have
changed for the better.
Nursing practices as well as its equipment and setting have changed drastically and
simultaneously on the vast development of technology. The speaker has provided set of
examples of innovative nursing approach towards patients, namely Peanut Balls, Ambulatory
Care Setting, Acuity-Adaptable Patient Room, etc. According to the speaker, Peanut Balls was
created for women that are going through with their labor and delivery, it aims to lessen or ease
the pain of the mother during contractions. According to Healthline Parenthood, Peanut Balls are
similar with Birthing Balls, hence peanut balls and birthing balls are nonpharmacologic pain
management during labor, and thus it aims to help women who are in bed to open the pelvis for
easier birth. It also has various benefits for the mother, mainly reduction in pain, shortened labor
time, reduction in rate of cesarean delivery, and reduction in rate of other interventions or
procedures in giving birth like forceps and vacuum extraction.
These innovative nursing approach are meant to the patient’s well-being, and I can truly say that
because of vast development of technology, we, nurses and other health care practitioners, can
suffice the patient’s needs as well as to secure their health status and well-being. With the use of
these modern nursing technologies we can fully extent our responsibilities as nurses, as we are
ought not to limit our service by just what we have but to help otherwise. However, nurses and
other health care practitioners must have the ability to apply different nursing interventions and
integrate the rapid technological change to the profession, otherwise, these technologies would
corrupt our skill and craft and that can affect the nursing profession in general. Carol Huston
stated in her online journal entitled “The Impact of Emerging Technology on Nursing Care:
Warp Speed Ahead,” that nurses must think right away on how should these emerging
technologies be used in the profession as it affects the nursing care towards the patients, and
should create an educational models and leadership development programs to secure that nurses
will be competent enough to apply and integrate these technological advancements.
