Answer the following questions as required.

Worksheet 1 (Week 1- Introduction to Immunity)

Questions:

1. What is the immune system?

The immune system is our primary defense against disease-causing

microorganism.

2. What are the 3 lines of defense and be able to give description of each.

First line of defense is the physical and chemical non specific defense. For
example, skin and tears.

Second line of defense is the inflammatory response.

Third line of defense is the antibodies.

3. What is inflammation?

Inflammation is part of the complex biological response of body tissues to

harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants, and is a protective
response involving immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators.

4. How inflammatory response does protects the body?

Inflammatory response protects the body by excreting the invaders from your
body by sneezing, runny noses, fever, and etc.

5. What are the stages of inflammation?

Acute, sub-acute, and chronic

6. How does antigens and antibodies work?

When an antigen is found in the body, the immune system will create antibodies
to mark the antigen for the body to destroy.

Antibodies are produced by the immune system to help stop intruders from
harming the body.

7. Do antibodies kill antigens?

Yes

8. What is lymphatic system? Give the functions of the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that help rid the body
of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials. The function of the lymphatic system is
to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection-fighting white blood cells, throughout
the body.

Worksheet 2 (Week 2 Lesson 2 – Organs of the Immune System)

Questions:

1. What are the organs of the immune system?

Adenoids, tonsils, bone marrow, hematopoiesis-formation of red blood cells,

white blood cells and platelets, appendix, thymus, lymph nodes, spleen.

2. Give the functions of each organ of the IMMUNE SYSTEM.

Adenoids stop bacteria and other infection causing organisms from

infecting other organs of the body.

Tonsils form the first line of defense against infections.Their function is to trap

bacteria and viruses from inhaled air. The lymphocytes and antibodies present in them
help kill bacteria.

Bone Marrow: All cells, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, and
lymphocytes, of the immune system are initially derived from the bone marrow. They
are formed by a process called hematopoiesis

3. What is hematopoiesis? Where does it occur?

hematopoiesis is the formation of blood cellular components. It occurs in the

bone barrow.

4. What is the principal site of hematopoiesis?

The bone marrow is the principal site of hematopoiesis.

5. What are the organs and tissues of the hematopoietic system?

The organs and tissues of the hematopoietic system are bone marrow, spleen,
tonsils, and lymph nodes.
