2 (a) (i). It has the same number of protons and electrons.

(ii). They all have the same number of protons.

(iii). They have the same proton number but a different nucleon number.

(b) (i). 2.8.6

(ii). It is a non-metal. The element with 15 protons is Phosphorus and it is a non-metal.

3 (a) (i).

(ii). The molecules in solid nitrogen are packed and arranged very tightly together in a fixed shape
(lattice), allowing them to vibrate in their positions only. On the other hand, the molecules in nitrogen
gas move quickly in random directions freely and so they are located far apart from each other without a
definite shape or volume.

(b). As the temperature is increased, the molecules absorb more energy and as a result, they move
faster. This means that the molecules hit the walls of the container more, producing more pressure.

(c) (i). The molecular mass of nitrogen is 14 while for chlorine it is 35.5. It is because nitrogen is lighter
than chlorine and so it is able to travel faster.

(ii). Nitrogen gas diffuses faster at a higher temperature because more energy is absorbed by the
molecules, causing them to move faster.

(b) (i). maximum yield:

number of moles of HCl used = 0.04 x 2= 0.08

number of moles of CoCl2 formed = 0.08/2= 0.04

number of moles of CoCl2.6H2O formed = 0.04

mass of one mole of CoCl2.6H2O = 238g

maximum yield of CoCl2.6H2O = 9.52g

to show that cobalt(II) carbonate is in excess:

number of moles of HCl used = 0.08

mass of one mole of CoCO3 = 119g

number of moles of CoCO3 in 5.95g of cobalt(II) carbonate = 5.95/119= 0.05

7 (a). Equilibrium in reactions is when the rate at which both forward and backward reactions are the
same, and so the amount of products and reactants remain constant. There is no overall change in the
reaction.

(b). The reverse reaction is endothermic. A darker color suggests that there are more iodine
monochloride. For more iodine monochloride to form, iodine trichloride has to break down more. If
more heat is added and more iodine trichloride breaks down, the reaction has to be endothermic.
