ACTIVITY 4-1

1. What is your understanding of indigenous science?

In my understanding, indigenous science is like the backbone of the
science that it is today or called the modern science. It is practiced by our
ancestors during early civilizations which helped them survived and understand
the phenomenon in their surroundings.

2. What are examples of indigenous science practices?

 Prediction of weather - an example of this is predicting weather through the
sun, red sunset or rainbow. Repeated sounding of goat is related to
landslides.
 Use of herbal medicine - herbolarios
 Preserving foods - example: preservation of meat in cordillera known as etag
 Classifying plants and animals
 Selecting good seeds to plant
 Classifying soil for planting
 Wine production for fruits
 Local Irrigation and agriculture -rice terraces in Banaue
 Building of huts
 Use of hunting tools

3. Why do some people believe in indigenous science?

I think it is maybe because they are not familiar or not in touch with the
modern science.

4. Do you think indigenous science should be considered science?

Anything can be considered “science” if and only if the scientific method

can be successfully applied to it.
5. Identify Filipino indigenous knowledge that is being practiced until today.
 Use of herbal medicine – herbolarios
 Building of huts
 Use of hunting tools

6. Research on the connection of indigenous knowledge to science and technology.

There are occasions when science takes on board some aspect of Indigenous
knowledge but only when it meets the criteria of western science. Generally, however,
Indigenous Knowledge does not fit the criteria for science and therefore is classed as a
different kind of knowledge.

Another approach is that science and Indigenous Knowledge represent two

different views of the world around us: science focuses on the component parts whereas
Indigenous Knowledge presents information about the world in a holistic way.
