Program “Antibiotic resistance: the accelerating growth and global

Design expansion of antimicrobial resistance”
COLLEGE

General Program Information:

As an important component of Students Development, seminars are
Program Description conducted to edify the knowledge of students and enhance their skills to be
in conformity with wholistic learning.
Pre-requisite Program Finished MT-05 (Bacteriology) Lecture and Laboratory Subject

Management Level of Academic level

Program

Duration 3 hours

Delivery Mode Seminar

Target 4th year Bonafide students of St. Alexius College enrolled in Bachelor of
Science in Medical Technology

Budget Requirement 400 pesos per student

Rationale:

Working in a science laboratory is a major contributor for the analytical and cognitive
development of learners. It is also the avenue where the practical application of the theories and
principles are applied. It is in the laboratory where these complicated theories are deciphered and
compels classroom lectures more comprehensible.

Thus, a seminar must be conducted to the learners so they will become aware of the effectivity,
differences and abilities of microorganisms becoming resistant to certain antibiotics. This will also
awaken students about the growing number of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and their effect in the
society. On the other hand, tackling the declining efficacy of antibiotics available in the market or
certain laboratories should be of significance since this is very critical aspect in Medical Technology
field.

Objectives: At the end of the seminar, the participants are expected to:

1. Know the principle of Anti-Microbial Susceptibility Testing

2. Understand how resistance develops
3. Identify the different microorganism which are resistant or sensitive to a specific antibiotic.
End of Program outputs

1. Disseminated clear and cohesive information to the learners regarding the Anti-Microbial
Susceptibility Testing.
2. Emphasized the importance of antibiotics to physician’s proper treatment of patient’s
certain infection.
Expected Final Outcomes/Success Indicators
1. 100% attendance of Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology Major Interns
2. The seminar goes within the time frame
3. The objectives of the activity are met.

NARRATIVE REPORT

Seminar on “Antibiotic Resistance: The Accelerating Growth and Global

Expansion of Antimicrobial Resistance”

March 7, 2020 was the set date by the Fourth Year BSMT-Seminar 2 Students

under Ms. Nhoelyn E. Burcao, RMT, and Mr. Carlo C. Impal, RMT to conduct a one day

seminar about Antibiotic Resistance for the Fourth Year Medical Technology Interns

held at the Room A301 at St. Alexius College, Inc.

We had our subsequent meetings for our seminar and formed committees to

organize the said event. We’ve assigned students for committees on program,

attendance, certificates and tokens, tarpaulin, decoration and documentation.

At exactly 6 A.M. on the said date, the attendance committee arrived at the

venue. Upon arrival to the venue, the Interns are able to sign their designated names on

sheets provided by the attendance committee and entered the room. The decoration

and tarpaulin committee ensured that their work was done beforehand the event and so

the stage was already set. Checking on certificates and tokens, the assigned committee

guaranteed complete number and correct names of participants. The Interns didn’t get

to assign committees for food since they all agreed to not provide food for them but only

for the speakers. The program committee finalizes their work by preparing (for the

technicalities) the microphone and projector. Documentation team started to cover the

event upon arrival.

Ma’am Jayvee Merz M. Loria, RMT, the resource speaker, told us to reschedule

our seminar due to personal reasons. We continued with the other group’s seminar in

the afternoon that day. Ma’am Jayvee decided to conduct the activity on March 9, 2020

at Room A303 at St. Alexius College Inc. after our duty.

The first part of the lecture includes the importance of Antimicrobial Resistance

or Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing, she even discussed how the resistance develops

and also the microorganisms involved which are either resistant or sensitive to a

specific antibiotic.

Ma’am Jayvee explained the principle about how antibiotic resistance has the

potential to affect people at any age and stages of life. No one can avoid the risk of

resistant infections but there are people that have greater risk especially to those who

have chronic illnesses. Instances just like if an antibiotic will lose its effectiveness, we

lose to treat infections and control health threats since there are medical advances that

are dependent on antibiotics to fight a certain infection.

It is important for us, future registered medical technologists, to retain information

especially in this kind of topic since most of the time the graduates of Medical

Technology field tend to pursue laboratory works rather than entering the academe,

making themselves more susceptible in laboratory circumstances.

Ma’am Jayvee concluded her lecture at exactly 5:30PM. Immediately after the

lecture we gave Ma’am Jayvee the Certificate of Appreciation for her time and effort in

sharing her knowledge about Antimicrobial Resistance. The Certificate of Appreciation

was handed to her in the presence of the BSMT- 4 th year Student Interns of the Medical

Technology Department of St. Alexius College. Restoration was done after a little

chitchat with the speaker and the Interns ensured that the room is well organized and

clean before leaving the venue.

Jayvee Merz M. Loria, RMT.
