LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Name: Isaac Lund
Grade Level: 7
School: O’Gorman Junior High
Date: September 25, 2020
Time: All Day

Reflection from prior lesson: This lesson will build off of the work we did yesterday.
We began work on using a number line to plot what we did on a graph.

Lesson Goal(s) / Standards:  Add and subtract “Like Fractions”.
Standards
7.RP.1.A: Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and
mathematical problems.

Lesson Objectives: Add and subtract like fractions

Materials Needed: Projector, connection to the projector, white board. Student

devices.

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: These students have been working
with fractions and are ready to learn to simplify them. They have also studied
number rules and arithmetic so are ready for this lesson.

The Lesson

 Introduction (3 min) as the students enter, have them pull out computer and
complete mentimeter survey.
o  relating to past experience and/or knowledge
 Who likes pizza. Everyone! Everyone pull out computers and
hop on to menti.com and type in the code at the top.
o creating a need to know.
 I have written some important pieces of information I feel we
should know about each other on the board.
o sharing objective, in general terms
 By the end of the period, you will be able to add and subtract
“like” fractions, no matter the denominator.
 Content Delivery (15 min)
o      We will work with the data we collected with the survey to add
together different aspects of the results. Such as
 Those who like pizza plain
 Those who like meat
 Those who don't like meat.
o We will look at the data and I will ask “ if one person is 1/X, what would
X/X mean? Looking for the WHOLE in this case. Mentimeter allows a
pie chart view of the same data so this could be a nice connection to
that.
o Once we have added 1 or two of these factors together, I will
introduce, simplifying the fraction.
o Once the students have seen me do it, they will try on their own to
simplify one of the problems we did earlier.
o If any questions arise, we will look over and answer them.
o We will move on to a quick look at subtracting the same type of
fractions and show how the same rules apply. I will mention Add the
opposite.
o Students will then be assigned their homework and I will walk around
to assist them with any questions that arise.
 Closure (2 min)
o  Closure will consist of a mentioning of any questions I heard more
often, any misconceptions we ran into, and any final comments on
how they did working on their homework.
o I may also ask people's opinion on pizza, look at the graphs and just
talk about the outcomes.
 Assessments Used
o  Questions throughout the lesson plan where students will work on
their own to complete similar problems to the example. This may be in
groups or on their own.
 Differentiated Instruction
o  As the students are working, we will go around assisting students in
their understanding. Helping them with aspects of their learning.
