Hadith 1: 10th September 2019

TERMS
 Hadith = Qul (saying/speech) + Fael (actions done by #P) + Sakoot (affirmation, or the silence; someone did an
action, #P remained silent upon it. That means he says it’s right/ok) of the #P, and the Sahaba Ikraam and the
Tabi'un on any issue.
 3 generations closest after the #P

Sahaba Ikraam Ajma'een = all the Sahabas 1+2+3

1st Generation: Sahaba 2nd Generation: Tabi'un 3rd Generation: Sabaat
Muslim, died as Muslim/Imaan, saw Knew at least one sahaba Tabi'un
or met the #P at least once* Sabattabaeen - a person who has met a 3rd generation
Attahabi – a person who has met a Tabi’un in a state of imaan and died in
Sahabi in a state of imaan and died in a state of imaan
a state of imaan

*SIDEBAR = Syed Owais Qarni a man who had a great love for #P and wanted to meet with him but his mother was
very sick. With permission of his sick mother, travelled to Medina to meet #P. By chance, #P went out for a ghazwah
(trip) but Owais could not wait for him so left without meeting #P but had Imaan. Returns to look after his mother.
Eventually his mother passes away, and he immediately returned to Medina to meet #P. Unfortunately, #P just passed
away a few days earlier. However, #P had given signs of Owais Qarni to Hazrat Umar (ra) and Hazrat Abu Bakr (ra).
Said a man will come who is from the tribe of Karan, and has a certain mark on his body, and he loves #P very much.
So when he comes, you must honour him. So, when he came, he was recognized and was greeted by Hazrat Abu Bakr
(ra) and Hazrat Umar (ra) and was given him a lot of honour. However, he was not categorized as a Sahabi as didn’t
meet or see him. However, him not being a Sahabi doesn’t take away from Owais Qarni’s rank but he does not get
“ra” title after his name.
 Sunna – general practices/habits of #P generally speaking during his life. So when #P prayed 4 rakaat before Zohr,
they are called Sunna. We live according to the #P’s Sunna, NOT hadith – that mashwera only given to ONE
Sahabi for his/her situation vs entire nation, esp since some hadiths will contradict each other, but need to
understand the context and have excellent understanding to apply.
o Sunna mua’kadda – rarely left e.g. 4 sunna namaaz at
o Sunna ghair mua’kadda – sometimes did e.g. nafl
o Sunna zawaid – habits related to #P’s daily life

 Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'ah – the people of the Sunna and the people of the group = the scholars, including
Sahaba Ikraam. That’s majority of the Muslims. We believe in Shahada.

2 Kinds of Wahi

 Wahi = revelation that came to #P and it used to come directly into his heart

Wahi Matloo = only be in the Quran Wahi ghair matloo – not in Quran
 exact words of #A and no change
 Example, Hadith al Qudsi, words of #A but when
or alternation
#P relates those words, it is in a form of a gist;
 i.e., Quran itself, and no change in when #P narrates, words may be changed but not
words of Quran meaning

 Hadith – Wahi would come to #P and was put into his heart. At that time, nothing beats memorizing but was
written. In early Islamic years, Hazrat Umar (ra)’s sister. At the time of #P, said can’t write down any hadith as
he didn’t want to mix up the Quran and Hadith = was an order. Later, after Hijrah, in Medina when Muslims
matured and knew the difference of revelation, then #P allowed for hadith to be recorded. Written word can be
wrong, but not memorization.

Hadith 2019-20

Hazrat Umar Abdul ibn Aziz, the great grandson of Hazrat Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra) ordered first official
collection of hadith so many Hadith books compiled and graded i.e., weak/strong hadith.
ALSO COVERED CONTENT ON 30TH OCTOBER 2019
 Hadith classified according to narrator number i.e. how many people are saying the same thing? So, if large
number of people saying same thing, then hadith.
Number of narrators = chain. Before it says, there are 3 to 5 names before him and then refers to #P.
So a chain of people reciting a hadith, the chain = a sunnad. No sunnad, then not accepted as hadith.
2 Types of Hadith (MK)

 Hadith Muttawatir  Hadith Kabr-ul-Wahid (MAG)

Narrated by so many people in one generation so Not as many narrators of hadith e.g., more than
unlikely a lie at time #P passed away. 3. Feels less than “so many people” e.g., 40
Entire Quran is Hadith Mutawatir as it’s come narrators so KW but is Mashoor
from the #P’s speech (Khalil) Every generation must specify the hadith
The Fuqaha have categorized the number of verbatim every generation according to number
narrators as 70 or 73. of narrators
3Mashoor = must have at least 3 narrators from
any gneration who stated verbatim the hadith
2Aziz = 2 narrators
1Gharib = 1 narrator

Types of Narrators (SHDM)

Another classification of hadith based on the type of narrators based on certain qualities. There is room for different
interpretations. Types of hadith based on the sanad of hadith.

1. Sahih Hadith 2. Hassan Hadith 3. Daeef Hadith 4. Maudu Hadith

Min. 2 narrators must and = Good hadith = Weak hadith/no fiqhi = Fabricated hadith
every single narrator, must Main difference with (1) is in Not kamal azaat: Min. 1 No chains
have 5 characteristics (KMA): the memory, not kamal azaat narrator doesn't have perfect Books of Maudu = written to
i) Kamal Azaat = perfect One narrator maybe a "little' memory say not true and shows proofs
memory, verbatim bit weak e.g, quoted hadith Not mutasil, but muntaqa But if it has good morals, then
ii) Mutasil Sanad = chain but added 2 words compared sanad = may have a break in follow, no harm
cannot be broken with other narrators. chain
iii) Adl = be just (good men, Not adl = maybe 1 narrator is
ppl of Sunna, not liars, not adl e.g., missed 1 fard
fulfilled all fard) namaz
iv-v) + 2 other qualities to be Still hadith, but not used for
discussed later in 3rd year legal purposes of Fiqh so used
to teach moral
e.g., Salat ul Tasbeeh derived
from DH but still used as 11-
14 narrated. Not a fard
namaaz
Daeef Hadith – can be used
for the Bara'qah.. Cannot be
used for Fiqhi matters.

HADITH CLASS 3: 18th September 2019

Book covered in class – “Provisions For The Seekers” (Zad ut Talibeen) by Shaykh Ashiq Ilahi al-Bulandshehri (ra).
Zad = provisions, increase. Talibeen = the seekers. So, provision for the seekers, ‘seekers of knowledge,” of hadith.
Hadith is the References “seeking spiritual guidance.”
Hadith is the Speech/qul + action/fael + silence/sukhoot

P a g e 2 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

The book has 261 Hadith and then 2 other chapters about the prophesies of the #P. Will try to cover ~100 hadith. This
book is a shorter form called “Mishtaqal Misaab” and written by Imam Tabbari.

PROPHETS
Our deen is from Rasool Muhammad (saw). He’s a Rasool and Nabi
 Rasool = messengers/umbiya with scripture.
Nabi = prophet. All prophets sent by #A are called umbiya because they pass #A message.
Some chosen umbiya are given a scripture, but not all came in a book e.g., Rasool Ibrahim so used to write on
stone, but they were short. Musa (as) wrote on stone.
Umbiya that received a book or scripture are called Rasools.
4 books = Zaboor (Dawood as), Injeel (Isa as), Torah (Musa as), Quran (#P),
 Start of the book says #P is #P was a person called Jawame al Kalim = comprehensive speech and he was
“jawame il hikam” and his speech was the ‘jewels of wisdom’.
 Why is he called “jawal alay salam”? Because his speech was wahi. He could express sentiment with very few
words. Today, we need many words to get ideas across; his duas had the capacity to encompass everything and it
takes many books to explain the content. Example dua said in class encompasses this world and the hereafter. We
need to understand that everything #P said was Wahi i.e. #A’s speech/words, that’s why he had comprehensive
speech. Hence, his speech was so vast and eloquent yet concise and precise and hence no comparison. We
should try to be like him so we need to love him, respect him and give due to his honour.
 Durood. It is wajib upon every Muslim to utter Durood on #P at least one. Whenever #P’s name mentioned in a
gathering, we should say Durood at least once during that gathering. And if you do it every time, even better as #P
said, “whoever sends him blessings on me once, #A sends his blessings on him 10 times”
 Today we don’t respect and honour #P enough, partly because we don’t understand him anymore as we don’t study
his life. The love in our hearts for him is not what it should be. The biggest proof when seeing how the ummah
reacts to him.
Example 1: Pakistani’s response (retaliation) to anyone saying against #P by burning cars. Reference when #P
had opposition in Mecca, he and his ~40 followers did not lift a finger to anyone, so no revenge or retribution.
So, when armies went to conquer lands, it was completely for #A’s sake. When actual jihad took place, did
not harm the priest, women and children. Can protest, but not with intention of fitna or destruction and should
be done within boundaries of Shariah and Sunna.
Example 2: Reference life of Sahaba. When they did something wrong, they were corrected and then corrected
themselves.
 Hadith um Mimbar – Gibrael (as) went to visit to #P. He was climbing up to the mimbar to give a speech. As he
was on the first step, he stops and says Ameen. Stops on 2nd and 3rd steps each time and says Ameen. When Sahaba
asked him why he did this, #P replied:
“Gibrael (as) said I am going to make a dua and you have to say Ameen. May that person be destroyed who sees
the month of Ramadan but does not make use of it. [Ameen] May that person be destroyed who hears
your name and does not say Salalah ho wa alay asalam. [Ameen] May be that person be destroyed, who
finds both his parents in old age and does not to enough to serve them in order to reach paradise. [Ameen]”
Azkar daily for students of Nur ul Ilm [prev class]
1. Istighfaar x 100 times in the morning and evening
2. Send Durood x 100 times in the morning and evening
3. Should read some Quran every day, whether 1 page. Must read with meaning
4. Murak’aaba – where you focus on heart and know your heart is saying #A
This book says “Albaba aloo” and the author says “in it is a collection of words and springs of wisdom and it is
beautiful advices.”

Hadith 2019-20

HADITH #1 - START: THE PROPHET (SAW) SAID “INDEED THE ACTIONS ARE
WITH INTENTIONS AND SURELY A MAN IS WHAT HE INTENDED. THEN WHO
INTENDED HIS MIGRATION (HIJRAH) TOWARDS ALLAH AND HIS RASOOL, THEN
HIS MIGRATION IS FOR ALLAH AND FOR HIS RASOOL. AND THOSE WHO DID HIS
MIGRATION/HIJRAH TOWARDS THE WORLD/ DUNIYA OR A WOMAN, HE EARNS IT.
THEN HE MARRIES HER (THE WOMAN). THEN HIS MIGRATION IS WHAT HE
MIGRATED FOR.

[Copied from the book: The Prophet (saw) ~ said, "Actions are only according to intentions, and a person receives
only what he has intended. Therefore, whoever's emigration is for Allah and His Messenger, his emigration is [truly]
for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever's emigration is for any worldly gain or a woman he is to wed, then his
emigration is for what he emigrated]
[New info for 2019 class, shorter version] Hadith 1:
Inama – Kalima alhamar. Whenever a hadith starts with “inama”, means the words that come after it are extremely
important. Translates like “Indeed.”
The words Bismillah Arahman-niRaheem = words that differentiates between a dis/believer. We start with the words
of #A. Disbeliever does the same action, may do something similar in terms of worship/words,
Inimal.. is the start of hadith = this is kalima hal hasaar, used for hassar. When #P says this, then saying pay attention
to what I am saying.

KEY LEARNINGS: context of Umm Qays, intentions/niyaa definition, rewards, riyaa,

All books of hadith quotes this first hadith.

Context for Hadith

 Reason of this hadith’s revelation. Umm Qays, she was in Mecca. A man loved her very much and he wanted to
marry her but she had converted to Islam at this time. Order from #P of her Hijrah had come to her to migrate to
Medina. She told the man that she had converted and was migrating to Medina. She said she couldn’t marry him
anyway because he’s not Muslim. So the man migrates to Medina and changed religion to marry her, and becomes
a Sahaba. He became known as Mujjahir Umm Qays.
 When this happened, the Sahabas asked #P about this ‘incident’ and said this man has migrated from Medina, but
he migrated for a woman. They asked “whether their emigration for #P and #A is the same as this man’s.”
So, they received Wahi as a jawaab “indeed your actions are according to your intentions. If you migrated for #P
or #A, then you’ll get the reward accordingly. If you migrated for a woman/duniya, then your migration will
be rewarded according to the intention you migrated.” Is the reward the same for them? No as was not for the
same intention.
 When Mujjahir Umm Qays met #P in Medina, he said when he went to the company of #P, “I fell in love with
him and it was to such a degree, there was no space left for anything else.”
P a g e 4 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Intentions / Niyaa
 Every day, we all wake up and go about our day and we make breakfast for children and take them to school, iron
clothes for our children and husbands, pick them up, cook meals… all that we do during the day should have an
intention. We are people of no intention. We don’t do “niyaa” then how you can expect reward?
 Difference between Muslims and non-Muslims. It’s in the heart and not on the tongue. In Pakistan, we taught to
say on tongue, probably as a reminder to make niyaah. Niyaa is a feeling of the heart. If it is not brought to the
tongue, it’s OK not mandatory except in exceptional cases.
 The difference with Muslims is that ‘everything we do, we should start with Bismillah” so that whatever we do is
for the sake of #A. We must have an intention that we do everything for #A’s sake, extremely important. So we
train ourselves to say Bismillah at the start of all our action.
 Challenge is we don’t mean our words after awhile. Alhumdulillah = all praise is for #A, thank you for giving me
this ‘thing’ so must have an understanding of what is being said
 Everything has an intention.
Example: a scholar that uses the land cruiser for the sake of #A. His intention was to keep his kids safe during
their car rides, transport them for Islamic class, buy groceries for the Islamic institution… intention is for #A’s
sake. Compare with if intention is to show off, then it would be good intention. We can come same
gathering, but with different intentions.
 If Amal is like prayer, can only have one intention and will be rewarded for them.
 A nafli action can have multiple intentions… going to gatherings, want to learn to know #A, teach others, become
a hafiz of hadith so will be rewarded for all of them.
Definition: Intention = matter of the heart
 Defined as something that’s in the heart, like knowledge/feeling. And it does not need to be brought to the
tongue. When you stand for the fard prayers, when heart knows your intention then not necessary to put on the
tongue. People put on tongue as a reminder only, but not necessary.
 Our profit and loss in this life is according to our intentions. Suppose a situation is where you decide you are going
to do something.
Example: make intention to reward beggar from next pay check. When pay check arrives, you remember and
you give the money to the beggar. Another person does the same intention, but doesn’t have the money to
give as has unexpected household expenses, then what to do if it’s hard to pay? Actions are according to your
intentions.
[EXAM QUESTIONS]

Difference of opinion on Niyaaa: reward vs valid

 Imam Hanifah (ra) said “actions are rewarded according to intentions”
 Imam Shaafi (ra) said “actions are valid according to intentions.”
Example for wudu: Imam Hanifa (ra) says wudu is valid without intention but no reward/ajaar. But Imam Shaafi
(ra) says wudu is invalid without an intention, so then prayer is invalid.
 Actions always done purely for the sake of #A, are superior to those that have something for worldly
reasons/benefits.
Example: Buying fancy car to help other worshippers going to the masjid
Example: If going to Hajj and also going to trade at the same time. This is not a problem, but the intention is
different vs. going only for the sake for #A (higher reward) compared with one that is mixed with worldly
benefit such as business (lower reward).
 If an act of worship is mixed with riyaa (showoff/ostentation), even to the slightest degree, then difference of
opinions
Abu Dardah (ra) – sahabi and Hassan al Basri (ra) from tabiun – they both say if an action of worship is mixed
with Riyaa, then any action/worship will not be accepted by #A.

P a g e 5 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Now question arises, now ‘what if there’s an action starts with Ikklaas (pure intention/sincere) but then intention
starts erodes as people praising you, then over time the intention starts to mix. Is that intention still
acceptable?
If feeling that came into heart and came for just a second, but does not stay in your heart and you continue
prayer like you normally do, then action is valid
Different opinions: If entertain and allow to rest in your heart f
o Opinion 1: Imam ibn Ahmad Humbal and Hasan Basry – they say we hope this action will be
accepted/rewarded by #A as initial niyah was pure
o Opinion 2: Imam Ibn Jalil ibn tabiri (ra) but depends on the action that you were doing (e.g.,
farayd such as fasting, hajj, they are valid. But like other naffli ibadaat, (teach, learning, charity) if
not free from ostentation from throughout action, then this action is invaid.
3 Differences of Opinions on Riyaa (FSM)
i. If feeling of riyaa is fleeting and did not let it persist on heart or mind i.e. doing for sake of #A, then the action is
valid, so no harm in it.

ii. If riyaa stays with you and you entertain it, and start to self-praise
Example: teaching orphans, then Imam Ahmad ibn Humbal (ra) – the Hambali school – and Hassan Basry (ra)
say that: “we still hope the person will be rewarded based on his initial intention”.
iii. Ibn Jarir al-Tabarih (ra) – if riyaa mixes in and stays for a long time, then still reward according to the action.
Example: for fard acts (fasting, prayer, hajj), as long as niyaa was pure initial, then the action remains valid.
But if action is nafli ibadaat (rewardable acts), giving sadka, zikr etc, then your intention is not valid as no
mixing.
 Bukhari Sharif: #P said that a scholar will be forwarded to #A on the day of judgement, and he will be asked “why
did you seek knowledge?” The scholar’s answer will be “for you.” #A will reply “you are a liar (Qazib)” you
sought knowledge as you wanted honor of people, wanted respect of people, wanted to teach people. You are a liar.
I rewarded you on earth according to your intention and there is no reward for you at this time and he will be
thrown into the fire. Then a martyr Shaheed will be brought forward to #A and will ask him why did you do
jihaad? And the man will say for Him. Then #A will say Qazib, you are liar. You did it, the next person did it and
you were scared people said you were coward. You struggled for them, and not for my sake. Now your
destination is the hellfire. The third person who was a very generous person and gave a lot of charity. The person
says for the sake of #A. #A called him a liar. Said he gave openly so that others would know how charitable he is.
He will be thrown into the hellfire.”
The first people according to this hadith, who will be the people of the hellfire, are not going to be the drug
addicts but the insincere… Alim who claimed was teaching for #A, the Shaheed (not courageous, only
followed others and not #A) who died for #A and the generous person (showed off wealth) who did something
for #A.
Try to make multiple intentions for nafli ibaadah
So, if you are rewarded, then rewarded multiple times
 The #P said I am not scared for my Ummah for doing Shirk Akbar (start to worship an idol), but fear for Shirk
Askbar when you beautify your prayers for the sake of others. Huge challenge, so need to fix. This is Riyaa.
Example: control anger in public, but not privately, and this person is a hypocrite. Point is hard are we struggling
against the hypocrisy.
 Be truthful to oneself so can deal with these spiritual diseases. Always refresh your niyaas as a source of
reminder.
 #P could never do anything wrong. He was still protected as he was a prophet. We have to choose what is right or
wrong.

HADITH CLASS 3: 25th September 2019

Hadith 2019-20

PRE-CLASS NOTES-FROM 2018

We are learning for the sake of #A so must implement, this is not about academics. Need to implement what is being
taught in class. Should be in wudu. When sit, try to sit on the ground as it’s better. Make the effort base on the
Sunna. Make an effort to face the Qibla. Hair should be covered, as it’s Adaab. Deen is all adab. Shows to Allah
swt that we honour that. Make sure start with the name of #A, say durood. Before get up, make a dua.
Correction from previous session: In this culture, everyone says Bismillah. Actually, should be saying Inna lillahi
Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un. This was in reference to a hadith where #P said about a flame flickered out at night, so said
Inna lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un as was in a calamity. However, why people say Bismilllah in a hadith “Abul Milhi
(ra) narrates that a man said that I was riding behind #P and the horse stumbled, so the man said “may the shaytan
perish.” #P said you should not say that as makes shaytan more powerful and rises like a house. Rather, say
Bismillah so shaytan shrinks to become like a fly.” So, when someone stumbles over, should say Bismillah.
Remind yourself that everything is coming from #A so must focus on the intention in your earth. Only you know your
niyaa, not anyone else, and should be filled with Ikklaas.

Some of these hadith are about society and then move to spiritual diseases.

Pre-Class Notes-NEW 2019

Hadith: A sahaba asked #P asked about migration. Said another man migrated because of Umm Qays and we did it
for the sake of #A, is it the same? #P said, “indeed your actions are rewarded according to your intentions. And
indeed, for every man is what he intends.” So, if this man was for the sake of the woman, so his reward is according to
that, and if yours is for the sake of #, then you will be rewarded. For every man, it is for what he intends. Intention
should be with ikklas, should be a true intention i.e., not saying in heart, do it if you can else not true intention.
Example: A woman loves to do good things, like wanted to give RS. 25k next day in charity. Next day she realizes
she’s not getting any money and so cannot give charity. BUT, her intention was with ikklas so her reward is as if she
gave the Rs. 25k. Now, shaani marood of this hadith.

Review of last class

1. Niyyah = intention, feeling in the heart.
 Abu Hanifah (ra) is according to intentions so you will be rewarded for it. Example: If you do not say Bismillah
and if you don’t have an intention in your heart and you do wudu, then your wudu is acceptable/valid. But he said,
though, but no reward for it.
 Imam Shafi (ra) says actions are rewarded according to your intentions. Example: If you do wudu without saying
Bismillah, no intention, but your wudu is invalid. You have to say Bismillah
2. Actions done only for the sake of #A versus for any worldly benefit is of higher benefit. Example: Going for Hajj
for only the sake, or another also going for business.
3. If niya is mixed with ostentation/riya, will it be accepted?
Opinion 1: Abu Darda (ra) and Hassan Basry (ra) say that actions mixed with riya, are not accepted by #A
Opinion 2 depends if riya comes/goes: If you started action with good intention but later gets mixed Example: start a
prayer for sake of #A and then in-between someone comes into the room and becomes aware, so ruku/sajda becomes
longer,
Opinion 1: If riya comes and goes, then action is acceptable
Opinion 2: If riya comes and stays, then 2 opinions: (i) Hassan Basry (ra) and Imam Humbul (ra), if started with
khallis intention then hope will be rewarded for it, then make dua. (ii) Abu Jarrar (ra), if action is from the
farayd (fasting, hajj) then action remains valid even if riya came & stayed. If the action is by choice, not
farayd, like naffli ibadaat then need to fix and not hope for a reward
4. We should make multiple niyas/intentions for nafli ibadaat. So can make intention for the sake of #A, for me and
my parents, my children, make this a source of guidance, of increasing bara’qah in my rizk etc. It’s one amal and

P a g e 7 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

1,000 niyats. BUT not true for qa’dah or fard actions, only ONE niyya for the sake of #A. Multiple niya, multiple
rewards. Example 2: For nafl namaaz, can make niyaa for family, friends, rizk,
5. The #P said: “I am not scared that my Ummah will do Shirk Akbar (larger) but scared they will do Shirk Asghar
(smaller).” The smaller shirk = #P said: “When you beautify your prayer for the sake of others.”
6. The scholars say that the niyaa of ibadat, the intention of worship is of 3 types:

1. Fard ibadaat that requires a fard intention. Without an intention, that fard is
zero. If you do not have niyaa that faryd, then it’s not a fast anymore.

2. You make an intention to differentiate 2 kinds of worship.

Example: If you’re praying a sunna mua’kaddah prayer or a nafl prayer, then
this niyaa is not a fard for your action to be valid. If you make this niya, you
will get a reward. If you don’t, no issues

3. Niyaa for those worships that you make to let yourself know who you’re
doing it for.
Example: Making a niyya to remind yourself who you’re doing it for, like
charity so for zakat, must have intention else it becomes invalid and becomes
sadaqah. But if you go to marketplace and you give them charity, and make
niyya before giving, then reward is immense.

HADITH #2: DEEN/RELIGION IS SINCERITY
Al day noona seehahatooo

[Copied from the book: 1. The Religion (Islam) is to act with sincerity (Muslim).]
Learning points: deen definition/ 5 sincerity of intention (APBLM)
 Deen translation = the way we lead our life.
 Nasiyah = will give beneft. In this context, nasiyah will bring you benefit.
 #P says should lead life with sincerity, ikklaas. And should be done with different types of people according to
their rights.
Sincerity/Nasiyah of Intention (5) -APBLM
 1ST sincerity with your deen is with #A: sincerity should be reflected in EVERYTHING we do, so it becomes
ibaadat. We are doing everything for His sake, so fulfilling first. Quran, says “Indeed my prayer/salah, my
sacrifice, my life and my death are for #A, Who is the Lord of the world.” Innafalati wa sukiyya…

P a g e 8 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

There is no obedience for the creation, obedience is first to Creator/Khaliq. So, if someone is encouraging you to
do something outside of Shariah, then do not follow them. Do not hurt others, use hikma in how you talk to
them with love. Note, how to deal with parents.
Non-Muslims do everything for themselves, and we do everything with #A’s remembrance.
When start something, say Bismillah easily. Note, cannot say Bismillah before a ‘bad’ task e.g., watching TV.
First two sincerity of intention are ranked as #A and #P.
Sincerity should be reflected in Biggest way for sincerity to the #P is do
1st: #A

EVERYTHING we do, so becomes ibaadat. iftaabar (follow/obey his teachings).

2nd: #P
Quran: "That indeed my prayers, sacrifices, Only 1 prophet who'll intercede at the
my living and my dying, is for #A, the beginning. At least trying to follow him.

Our prayers, sacrifices e.g., sadka, zakat, 70 are directly linked to our life and

ADDITIONAL INFO FROM PREVIOUS CLASS
 RIGHTS: Imam Navialla (ra) (?) said this: “Haya is such a character, that it forces you to leave the bad, and stops
you from shortcomings in giving the right to the one who has to be given the right.”
Meaning, you should have a character that forces you to leave bad things = haya. It’s a character that forces you
to realize what is the right of the other and you make an active effort to give them their right, versus worrying
about your own right.
Example: Women demand rights with husbands, like I deserve 5 jorahs/outfits but then are you cooking him 3
warm meals daily?
Stop doing bad and make sure you give the right to the other person. Try to be good, at some point, the other will
acknowledge but may not be verbal i.e., says thank you – husband may look after the kids, pays for
everything, helps with housework.

P a g e 10 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Look for good points for other person, stop yourself from doing bad (haya) and remember, strive to give the right
of the other person.
 IKHLAQ: Every believer should have Haya and is part of our Ikhlaq (morals/virtues)
 PROPHET TRAIT: In Tirmidihi Sharif, 4 things common in all prophets and one of them is Haya and that’s how
strong it has been through all the Shariahs.
Hazrat Musa (as) when he left Egypt, he arrived in Madian and goes to a water well where 2 women getting
water; he says to them they he will carry the water and will walk ahead of them, and told them to walk behind
to direct him. He’s watching modesty of his eyes –} modesty of nazaar. The women directed him to the
house of Hazrat Shoaib (as).
 ISLAM CHARACTER: Syed Anas (ra) said: “Indeed every deen has a character, and the character of Islam is
haya”.
 JANNAH: Hazrat Aisha (ra) says “whoever does not have Haya, then he does not have a deen! And whoever
does not have Haya in this duniya, he will not enter into Jannah”. No haya, then not complete, need a sound heart.
To understand, Haya is an integral part of our deen. Not just modesty i.e. niqab, hijab, but from definition of “state
from comparing benefits and shortcomings. That state will help us from doing wrong things.
 IMAAN: #P says: “Haya is from Imaan, and Imaan will take people into paradise.” (sign from the people of Imaan
is haya. If you lack haya, then you are lacking in your imaan.
 LOYALTY: “Immodesty is from disloyalty (wal jiffah), and disloyalty is in the fire.” The disloyalty is to #A.
Our first Haya is with #A, as He watches us at all time and so we need to view our state at all times and must
understand we need to be better. People forget this, so will bribe, lie and cheat or be disloyal as no awareness of
#A. If you have feeling that #A is among us, we lack in the awareness of #A.

SELF-PURIFICATION CLASS 5: 9th October

2019
Book = Zatul talabeen. Beginning of book, lots of hadith refer to social diseases prevalent at the time.

HADITH #6: A MAN WILL BE WITH WHOM HE LOVES

Almahroo al mahoo manhabaa

[Copied from book: 3. A person will be with whom he loves (Bukhari, Muslim).]
Learning points: Shan-e-Nazool vs Gharood / Revelation reasons (JLF) / Blessed People (PTSR)/Train
 Shan-e-Nuzool = reason of revelation of an ayat/surah in Quran.
 In a hadith, revelation called Shan-e-gharood. It was revealed for a reason.
 This is a shan-e-nuzool.
3 Reasons Hadith Revelation Referenced (JLF)
1. First reason of revelation: Once a *Sahabi came to #P and asked: “when is the day of judgement?” #P instead of
answering him, asked him a counter question: “what have you done for this day of judgement?” The Sahabi
replied that he hasn’t prepared anything, “except that I love #A and I love his Rasool #P”.” #P replied with this
hadith (A man will be with whom he loves) “they will be gathered with them on the Day of Judgment.” The
sahabi was overjoyed to listen to this reply.

*Note: Ref: these people come from non-believing backgrounds when they were burying their daughters,
drinking, listening to music etc.

P a g e 11 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

If you love the righteous, then you’ll love the #P and will be in the company of them. So it’s so important to have
good company.

2. Second reason of revelation: Another Sahabi said to #P, “"0 Messenger of Allah, what do you say about
someone who loves a group of people, but is unable to join them?" #P replied with this hadith. So, if you love
a group of people and you want to be a part of them, then you will be with them in Jannah. So, it does not
matter if your actions are like the people of jamaat, you will be with the people that you love on the day of
judgement.

SIDE BAR story about intention: A woodcutter who was busy in time of Imam Ahmad Humbal (ra) (4th imaam),
had a large family and worked long hours, every night that he was so exhausted, would immediately fall asleep.
One day he saw Imam Humbal (ra) on his rooftop lost in his nawafil prayer. The woodcutter was too tired to stay
up to pray, but before he went to sleep, he would say to #A, “please let me pray like Imam Humbal (ra)”. The
Woodcutter eventually died and one night, he came into someone’s dream where he was with Imam Humbal (ra).
The astonished man goes the next day goes to the woodcutter’s wife to ask what her husband did as he saw him in
his dream. She said whenever he came home every evening, he would say (had a wish): “Ya Allah make me like
that man on that roof.” He wanted to have tawfiq of #A like Imam Humbal (ra). This story illustrates sincere
intention.

3. Third reason of revelation: Once a Sahabi went to #P and made effort to see him every day – day begins and ends
by looking at your face. I make a special effort to see your face. He said to him: “I look at your blessed face
every day but after we die, what will happen? How will I meet you?” He thought they are not on the same
intention. And when he asked this, #A sent an ayat of Quran: “Whoever obeys #A and obeys the #P, then he
will be blessed with the company of those #A has blessed/had mercy on.” (Prophets, truthful, martyrs,
righteous)
*Note: People #A blessed (PTSR): (a) prophets, (b) truthful/sadiqeen ones, (c) the Shuhudaa and the (d) righteous
ones.
o At this time, #P, said “you will be with the people you love.” So, we have to become people who love the
ones who are on the path to #A and hope we will be attached with them.
o Train Concept: A train has First, Business and Economy class carriages.
We have to believe that we cannot expect to be in First class (the 4 groups stated earlier), and hope to get on
business class, or with the righteous people.
Last train carriage is the ‘garbage’ where we’ll likely be! Good news is we all reach the destination as it was
attached to first class, so we should have hope that our worship and deeds are what they are and because we
hooked up with the first 4 groups, may #A bring us to the same destination!
Difference of opinion with scholars about “the people who you love”:
1) You will be of the same rank; 2) be able to meet this person very, very often.
 Dua: Alahooma inni asaluka yahobba bay hooka XXXXXX
 Translation: Oh Allah I beg of You Your love. And the love of those who love You. And I ask of you such deeds
that will bring me Your Love.”

HADITH #7: THAT ALCOHOL GATHERS/ACCUMULATES/COLLECTS MANY SINS.

Al khamaroo joomaah ii eethmee mee
[Copied from the book: 7. Alcohol constitutes many sins (Razin)]
Side bar story: There’s a saying that a man was told to: “do Sajida to an Idol, asked to commit murder and told to do
adultery – refused all three, but when offered alcohol, he accepted then he committed all the sins

P a g e 12 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Qamar definition = alcohol specifically made from grapes VERSUS the lab-made ones. It covers your intellect and
cannot distinguish between haram and halal. 4 Types of Alcohol
1. Alcohol derived from grapes is haram.
2. Synthetic alcohol, lab-derived alcohol is NOT haram, even if medicines e.g. Strepsils, so careful about consuming
things especially imported foodstuffs.
3. Perfumes: DNET written on boxes so means no alcohol and cannot be put on body or clothes. It is haram.
XXX
ALCOHOL IS FORBIDDEN/HARAAM (other examples, RIBA, spiritual diseases of the heart --backbiting,
gossiping). There are ayats that clearly state they are acceptable though. We’ve been given 2 blessings from #A:
a) QULB our heart, though the one in Quran given structure, also means to turn and change, and heart can do that.
So #A said I hold the Qulb of a man in my fingers and can turn, so we must ask for Tawfiq and dua to ask from
#A to keep us in Imaan “Rabana latoozil, batayna, XXXXXX”

b) INTELLECT. Alcohol messes one’s intellect, clouds judgement and unable to choose between halal and haram.
Anything with capability with intoxication that are highly disliked, “Makhruuh al Tahrimi” is close to haram but
not haram
Example: cigarettes, hashish, cocaine, drugs, hazing, even ‘drunk’ on movies. Note anything out of moderation
that takes you away from #A such as praying (no TV or movies).
[SIDEBAR]
How did alcohol become haram? (Nahal/Baqarah-prohibition/Nisar-salah/Maeda-forbidden)
Refer to story below. In the beginning, ayat in Quran came at time when alcohol was a practice and a custom and at
that time, no ayats had prohibited yet. Qhamar being forbidden came in 4 steps:

Step 1
 At the time, [Ayat #1] Surah Nahal Ayat 67 shared, where #A says: “and from the fruits of date palms and
grapevines, you obtain intoxicants (“sakaraan”), and a good provision”.

 At this time, Sahaba asked #P about Sakaar vs Qhamar in the ayat. Why? #A didn’t make alcohol haraam yet.

Step 2
 So #P then referred to [Ayat #2] Surah Baqarah ayat 219, #A says: “that they ask about Qhamar and Maysiri
(gambling), say to them, that in both (gambling/alcohol) there are great sin and benefit for the people, and their sin
is greater than the benefit.”
 Qhamar are of benefit, but the sin is greater… Still no alcohol prohibition yet.

Step 3
 After this, Syed Abdur Rehman ul Rauf had a dinner party with Sahabas, and during this gathering alcohol was
consumed (still not forbidden yet) and at maghrib time, they had to pray but Imam of that Jamaat recited Surah Al
Kafirun, he forgot some words (i.e., the “Lahs” which means “no”) so meaning changed
Immediately after that, #A sent [Ayat 3] Surah Nisar Ayat 43, “Oh you who believe, do not go near Salah/prayer
when you are intoxicated”
This is the first ayat starting with alcohol prohibition – but did not use the word haraam. Still not fully prohibited
but becomes difficult as salah is 5 times/daily plus Tahajjud. But alcohol would become limited to consume.
But only time they can consume alcohol is after Isha so drinking had reduced greatly.
Step 4
 At another dinner party after Isha, Syed Saad ibn Waqaas (ra) who consumed alcohol, was reciting a poem and he
mocked the Al Ansaar (helpers) where the message was where Al Quraishi have done much but Ansaar have not
done much. A young Ansaar is at the same gathering and also slightly intoxicated, picked up a camels’ jawbone,
P a g e 13 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

and hit Saad ibn Waqaas (ra) on head with a camel bone and injured him. Saad ibn Waqaas (ra) went to complain
to #P
 And now conferred to #A and now sends down [Ayat #4] Surah Maeda Ayat 90 forbidding alcohol & 3 others,
saying: “Oh you who Believe in Qhamar (refers to alcohol from grapes), Maysir (gambling), gathering (stone
altars), drawing lots of arrows (specific game of dare at the time) are all filth and these are from the actions of
shaytaan. (says words of Ammar) You must all stay away from this so that you will be the successful ones.”
 Sura Maeda, ayat 90: “Oh those who believe, indeed alcohol and gambling and stone alters and the drawing of lots
of arrows are filth/rijsoon from the amal/work of shaytan. Stay away from it so that you may be successful.”
 #A is saying that indeed alcohol and other things are filth and the work of shaytan, stay away and say successful.
Still not forbidden.
 EXTRA FROM LAST YEAR NOTES: When last Ayat came down, the reaction was interesting. Usually, when
someone there with #P when revelation, would tell Qaityeems (writer) of the Quran, then there was a crier that
went around the city and announced and the Sahaba Ikraam at the time, right there and then, let go of their goblets
and the streets of Medina flowed of alcohol that day. NEED TO MAKE EFFORT to change, especially when
made intention, don’t allow others to mess with your Nafs as no-one will encourage you. People have a lot of
arrogance, even done unconsciously, and don’t like change towards the Deen. Refer to Surah Al Naas, “that the
people who put waswasaa (whispers) is from shaytaan and from the humans.”

HADITH CLASS 5: 16th October 2019

HADITH #8: CALMNESS (ALANATOO) IS FROM #A AND HASTE (WAJAROO) IS
FROM SHAYTAN
Alanatoo minallah wal ajalatoo mena shaytaan

[Copied from book: 4· Calmness and patient deliberation is from Allah and haste is from Satan (Tirmidhi).]
 Before you do something/action, you should think about it before you do it
 Your calmness is from #A and hastiness is from shaytan. Calmness is a sign of a Mo’min.
 Before you do any action/amal from tongue or limb, think about two types of consequences:
1. Duniya – effect in worldly affairs. Example: when hurt someone, you will do prayer ‘at the last minute’
2. Akhira – separate consequences. You can be punished in the hereafter.
Before you do an action, you can do the following: istkikhara or istishara.

Seek guidance
 Step 1: ISTIKHARA: ask #A to guide you for what is the best for you. Istikhara is a masoom dua and should be
done for self.
o If in dilemma and seeking #A’s guidance, pray 2 rak’ahs and recite dua of istikhara and in that dua ask #A
“please guide me towards for what is best for me in this duniya and the akhira and keep away from me this
action if it’s not good for this duniya and the akhira.
o Lots of people think there’s a dream, but no dream. You only have to listen what your heart says is right and
start doing that action. Because you have done Istikhara, #A will guide you to do that action which is right for
you.
o If that action results in a calamity, then know that it’s qadr, #A had written that for you and so
destined/ordained. Results are not always good, but irrelevant as we did with ghair.
P a g e 14 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

o Istikhara can be done as many times as you like, no limit daily etc. Example: selling a house.
“Shariah qadr” = start to do Istikhara. Keep doing until your heart is content on a decision.
o If on mensturation, then just read the istikhara dua only then.
 Step 2: ISTISHARA: from mashwara word, Istishara, or guidance, sought from the righteous people (=follow
Deen and Shariah) who will guide you best for #A’s sake. So, know Muslims who know the Shariah and the
Sunna to guide on a decision that are within the bounds of Sunna and Shariah.
o If you have someone you trust, and you know they follow sharia and sunna, then you should seek istishara
from them as that will put bara’kah in the action. S/he is a wali of #A so if you ask his/her mashwara, then
should believe those actions are coming as a result of what #A wants you to do i.e. the will of #A. Better to
do istikhara first with Istishara, but no difference as depends on the situation as to when you can do first. As in
the decision, bara’qah will be given
o Shorter dua – when need to make instant decision for something there and then: “Oh #A, choose/select for me
option A or option B.”
Hastiness
 Hastiness is from shaytan – takes bara’kah away as doing without thinking or understanding the consequences
 When something happens and everyone goes into ‘crisis’ mode… the world does not end! It’s fine to slow down.
Stay away from haste.
o Example 1: Argumentative statement from someone who wants to argue about religion, best to hold tongue.
o Example 2: Sania bajji to drive to school via a different route!
How to get calmness?
 Calmness via zikr of #A.
 #A says in the Quran: “That the ones who believes and their hearts are peaceful with the remembrance of #A, so
listen so that the hearts will find peace in the remembrance (zikr) of #A.”
 Itminan = peace/sukoon. Lots of people don’t have Itminan at homes.
END OF CLASS

HADITH CLASS 6: 23rd October 2019

HADITH #4: [THE] GATHERINGS/MAJLIS ARE WITH TRUST.

Almajleesooo imaan aati

[Copied from book: 5. Gatherings are to be kept in confidence (Abu Dawud)]
Grammar notes
 Starts with Alif lam = muarraf bin lam. So “the” and follows a noun.
 Again another Alif lam followed by another ism.
Learning points: Amanat / 3 Exceptions (PA-MCT)
Gatherings should always be done for the sake of #A. The niyaah in the heart should always be done for #A’s sake.
Example: Walima is being done for the sake of #A, it’s the sunnnah of the #P. Even when get together for a coffee,
then should start with #A’s name. And can end it with a dua we use in class to end the session. When bring #A’s
name in any gathering, then the angel of mercy join the gathering. Ask #A to put bara’kah in that gathering. When
#A’s name is not mentioned in the gathering, then know it’s considered “Lau” (=useless, lam ein wau).
 What is a gathering? More than one person.

P a g e 15 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

 Whatever #P said, it was “Wahi” (put in heart by #A).

 The Fuqaha say that your gatherings also have element of trust (“Amanat”) and whatever is done in a gathering, it
has to be held in a trust. In this hadith, #A is saying that when we’re gathered together, then anyone talked into the
gathering must stay in the gathering.
 Reason – sharing info with others who hear about the content may not understand the context.
 The Ulema say, that when you’re in a gathering, whatever is said is confidential. That is, information shared cannot
be spoken outside e.g., if in a gathering, and relate that good/bad information and relate it to someone else. NOT
ALLOWED. But there are exceptions to this rule:
3 Shariah Exceptions for Sharing Info (PA-MCT)
1. Where gathering covers a topic that can be mentioned without problem – The information that was shared must
be of benefit to others, and it was meant to be spread like deeni information where they will benefit/learn and
niyat should always be “sharing.” Note, we don’t teach anything to our parents.
 Example: religious gathering where permission given for general information such as story of Hazrat Musa (as) as
part/Tafsir of Quran BUT cannot correct Wudu.
o But if person comes seeking answer from you, then wait and hold
 Example 1: Just learnt that gatherings are with trust, so shared with siblings that we shouldn’t share content in
gatherings with others.
 Example 2: During class break time, having discussion about Bajji jaan’s nasiyaah for AS2, which was deep in
deeni knowledge. So, this info should not be shared outside.
2. Cannot share anything said/done in gathering unless that person has given you expressed permission to
share it
 Example: classes are with trust, so whatever learnt cannot be shared with everyone as SB specifically stated cannot
share with husbands and families, but exception can share with children as mothers responsible for children.
 And SB has named specific information cannot be shared as Fiqh is a technical knowledge and taught in small
steps & context. If receiver has other more complex questions, you may not know how best to answer. We have
not gained the hikma of sharing the info which could turn the other person away from Deen.
 Example: Don’t make reference about clothing, esp to non-mehram. So if you say even if you liked XYZ’s outfit,
is still info.
3. Can share some info from gathering if you’re going to take advice about what happened from a
RIGHTEOUS person – who has Hikma of Deen.
 Example: backbiting among friends gathering, and then mention to teacher, who has asked for names.
 Righteous definition = LOVE and TRUST. A person you know personally well enough , know is learned (knows
Shariah/Sunna) and has a relationship of love (esp b/w teacher and student). So, when have love and trust, then go
to them for Mashwarah/advice vs. people off the street, regardless if Alimah or Mufti etc. If get, then must follow
Mashwarah or will break the person’s trust.
 Deen concept is “tauriya” – not lying, that is to phrase sentence in a manner, but the listener gets another meaning.
o Example 1:, Syed Ibrahim (as) said cannot go to the pagan festival as was sick, but what he meant was he was
‘spiritually’ vs ‘physically’ sick.
o Example 2: Sheikh was busy so told students to find him in the masjid.
 Exceptions when we can lie/untruthful on 2 to 3 occasions as stipulated in Hadith as intention is to:
o a. Mend a rift/conflict between 2 ppl where relationships broken, such as husband/wife which is sacred
relationship. MUST NEVER SPEAK OF DIVORCE. No other institution is higher than marriage. Divorce is
the most disliked among the halal things.
o b. Get Character reference for marriage – must give honestly and incumbent to give that information. Should
only mention pertinent, relevant and current information such as being involved with someone else and if

P a g e 16 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

irrelevant that impacts someone’s life, then backbiting. So like the groom is currently having an affair with
other women. If don’t ask specific information, then don’t mention anything.
o c. Get business reference – when someone seeking character reference, must be truthful. When person goes
into business relationship, it’s like a marriage as they are going into character, about current status.

HADITH CLASS 7: 30th October 2019

3 kinds of hadith – reference page 2 for more information.

HADITH #11: THE ONE WHO INITIATES THE SALAM IS FREE FROM ARROGANCE
Al badioo bissalaa me bareeyoo ama nal kibri hee

[Copy from book: 15. The one who initiates the salaam is free of pride (Bayhaql, Shu'ab aliman).]
Arrogance is called kibbr and also oojab, same EXCEPT angle of vanity (see below).

Pride = Kibbr Vanity = Oojaab.

 When you think that you’re better than  Same as kibbr except difference is when one
others and show them that you’re better than thinks highly of oneself.
them. So thinking is “new clothes, better
house… so better than maids”.
 This is arrogance is done between two
people as a comparison state.
 Kibbr is ALSO called vanity = when you
don’t need anyone else, just think highly of
oneself
 Kibbr is a spiritual disease of the heart.
Now to understand that the one who
initiates Salams, means we can go to
whoever we see, we do salam with them.

 Examples: arrogance = beauty, health, dress, education, spiritual knowledge

 Ayat 2: The one who has even one atom of arrogance, will not enter arrogance
 Hadith 1: Similar, where #P said “You will not even smell the fragrance of paradise if you have an atom’s worth of
arrogance in your heart”
 On the day of judgement, #A will divide them into two and one group will be arrogance and #A will change them
to ants and the people of paradise will step on them.
 Advice: Always say “s/he is better than me”. And cannot find something, then find someone else who is better than
me. Be critical of self and be strict. When do ‘masahehba’ (when do strict accounting of self e.g. didn’t read salah,
so to make up will say to read 8 nafls)

P a g e 17 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Cure of Arrogance

1. INITIATE DUA
The one who initiates the Salaam is free from arrogance. If we’re waiting for our helper to do
Salam, then she is free from arrogance and we are not. What’s the reality? However, exception is with
men, especially with non-mehram so can walk by, not considered rude.
So, when you see someone, say “Asalaama oh alaykaam” = may the peace of Allah swt be upon you
“wa Rehmatullahi wa Baraqaatahoo” = and his Rehmat/mercy be upon you and his Baraqat/blessings
be on you.
Do not need to initiate with a foreigner as it's a term used between Muslims.

2. REPLY
Reference: is once someone gifts you with something, you need to return it.
Replying to a salam is wajib
Best reply: “Walaykam asalam wa Rehmatullah wa Baraqaatahoo”.
Hadith: At time of #P, when Aishah (ra) was talking to someone, noticed ppl responding with
“Assaaam alayakam” = death and curse upon you. Just say “Wa Alaykam” = and on you

3. ETIQUETTE/TIMING
Should say in full Salam – should not say/type AOA. So must write in full.
Younger ones should say salaam to older ones -- but older ones should also do first so as to teach
them i.e. teach them to initiate. Must keep reminding them
Walking into a gathering – last one joining the gathering should say salaam. EXCEPTION: where
something going on e.g., talk, lecture, then don’t say Salaam as takes focus away, then Makkruh, as
disruptive. If give Salaam, then Wajib to give reply which is disruptive. However, if gathering like a
Coffee morning (gupshup), then can say Salaam then no issue.
If 2 people in conversation and appear to be discussing a private matter, do not interrupt – say
Salaam later when they are done
When people eating, better to avoid as wajib to reply and they may have food in mouth
When people in process of worship – better to avoid as they should not be attentive towards you if in
Ibaadat, then the focus is with #A

HADITH #9: A BELIEVER IS GULLIBLE/INNOCENT/SIMPLE, NOBLE, AND THE

#P describing the qualities of a believer and a sinner.

P a g e 18 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Momin qualities
 Because on a path of #A, busy purifying himself i.e. not worried about others around him/her. So, leaves him/her to
be innocent as trying to do good so only sees good in others.
o Example: If experience swimming, know what water feels like and how waves created, so one who has never
cannot understand the experience.
o Example 2: Someone who confides with someone that they are homosexuals, so difficult for Momin to
understand the feelings/reason.
o A Momin is a mirror of another Momin. Means that if you can see the faults of others, then means you can
recognize the other person’s fault
o So, if you see others’ faults, then means you have it so try to fix it in yourself.
 Tries to remain consistent. Ghirmooh = gullible/naïve/simple. Person believes in the best of people and cannot see
the bad in them. Inherently he is naïve and innocent. They don’t expect ‘bad things’ as they are Momin, expect
everyone else also. Innocence reasons:
o Doesn’t know about sins as never experienced so keeps Will come to
o He is Noble, so keeps own promise like returns money borrowed. Doesn’t do anything degrading to himself
or others; lives with nobility. Language used is not foul, actions are good. He has an inherent humbleness in
him and nobility, as can see goodness in him.
 Momin can be innocently tricked as noble. Momin is smart and doesn’t get bitten twice with business transaction
Example: taken for a ride once, but next time he should know not to be made a fool of again so naïve doesn’t
mean being stupid. Should still interact nicely as sin is bad, not the sinner
Sinner = Faajr
 = someone who is deceitful and disgraceful. He cheats people and does those things that are wrong. Wants
everything for himself. If sinner, becomes dishonorable. He lacks in his connection with #A. He is not worried
about his akhira, only worried about this duniya. If you sin, a dot darkens your heart, and when you sin again,
another spot is added. Eventually one sins so much, that his/her dark upon his heart. Momin’s when they sin, they
do tauba so the dot is removed. He goes so far away, that he does not come back.
 We should be focused on the akhira because that’s our reality. So, in this duniya, give them those rights.
 Our test is about the khabbar and the akhira. Shaytaan also tests us in a lot of ways, so says to people ‘just do it
once, and then says ok’.
Example: hijabi decides to take hijab off for the wedding, battling with nafs. During that time, you sinned
knowingly as acknowledged it was wrong and implemented for certain period of time and you fall.

HADITH #12: THE WORLD/DUNIYA IS A PRISON FOR THE BELIEVER AND A

JANNAH FOR THE DISBELIEVER.
Al dooniyah sijd nool mooh menee wa janatool kaa feeree:
[Copied from book: 10. The world is a prison for the believer and a paradise for the unbeliever (Muslim, Tirmidhi).]
 When struggle in path of #A, the struggle becomes harder and one is spiritually stronger.
 If reflect about previous struggles, now when think back say it was harder than now because of spiritually stronger.
Ref: the battles that #P undertook for the struggle of the battles. By the time #P passed away, the Sahaba Ikraam
due to battles and spread of Islam, became wealthy and Umar (ra) said spiritually went down when compared to
when they were poorer and struggled.
 We’re now engrossed in the world. Look how much we eat, takes an hour.

P a g e 19 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Why would #P say this world is a prison?

 Prison = loss of freedom. If you look at the life of a prisoner, where he’s not free to do anything, he has to do
everything whatever the warden says so his life is not his own and cannot meet his loved ones e.g., wakeup time,
use facilities, exercise time, breakfast… afternoon can eat, and cannot do whatever he wants.
 The Momin is like this prisoner, everything is not own and must be done in obedience to Allah swt. We are a
people who should consider ourselves convicts, in a prison
o Example: wake up for Fajr, must wake up with a dua, must do Wudu, read Quran, don’t sleep after Fajr as lot
of Baraq’ah, get kids up and send them up, cook, clean, go to institute, do Durood, Istaghfaar etc.
 A true Momin is also Insaan so puts a lot of weight on own Nafs, so his existence no different from a prisoner. A
lot of things connecting him to #A, becomes a source of enjoyment, but remains in prison because cannot meet the
one that he loves – so a state waiting for death. So, this world is paradise for the disbeliever where invented
microwave, expresso machines, unlimited food, ice cream. If feel that way, then need to be harder on self! Take
some of the luxury out, put some hardship on own Nafs e.g., pray Tahajjud. Make the struggle.
 How disbelievers make this world into Jannah. Examples: gadgets made for the disbelievers. Muslims made
progress in duniya for making deen better. So, we didn’t turn to inventing these things where deen not taught to
make us comfortable.

HADITH CLASS 9: 20th NOVEMBER 2019

HADITH #3: DUA IS THE CORE OF WORSHIP
Adooahaoo moogh mukhool ibaadatti

[Copied from book: 2. Supplication is the essence of worship (Bukhari).]

Musafireen has been called the core of worship for two reason:
1. Reason 1: Fulfill the obligation of calling on #A. So Fard karoona ul qaroon = when you call on me, I will
answer you. , we are supposed to supplicate to #A. Our dependency tends to be on the world, versus on #A. We
should have complete “ilmul yaqeen” that it is all on #A, and then to go out seeking for sububb, is absolutely
correct. So, there’s a peace/serenity in the heart if first asked #A and then go, whatever the result, will have
‘peace of mind.’ So there’s an understanding in our deen to call for #A for everything. The key is the thought
process – don’t be desperate, have tawakful on #A.
2. Reason 2: When you call on #A, you realize that he is the only one that will fulfill your need. Story: There
was a young boy, “Kaaki,” who became a great man in deen. She said that would feed child by making him pray
first, and when he comes out, then food would be there ONLY because #A is the provider. She was late home and
was concerned son may not get food so made dua that son would not break trust in #A. But when she came home,
found son had eaten as said it was there on table! Ref bajji story about passports
3. Reason 3: Salah is a dua. All prayers start with “Alhumdulilillah Rabil alameeen…” which is a supplication to
#A. Everyday in your house, OPEN QURAN, even if one line and other is prayer. Should do masoom duas as
have lots of power – ask for this world and hereafter. Whenever make dua, always start with “Alhmdulillah hila
rah man ireeaheem…” then durood on #P and then make a few masnoon duas in Arabic first and then end with the
Darood Sharif again.
Learning points: 3 dua core worship / 8 secrets / 3 acceptances
Ask and you will receive. Only #A will give. Dua is the core of worship. Remember
 We are created to worship #A
P a g e 20 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

 Recognize we ask dua from #A as we humans are weak, not supposed to be strong. When we think we are strong,
then arrogance takes us away and our humility is at the highest peak.
 Make a dua like a fakir. Don’t be scared to cry! Your time between you and #A. We always ask #A for all big
things, but also ask #A for small things, even salt. #A can give you anything and everything you want, but we
doubt in Him.

8 Secrets of Dua (I GOTT CK)

1. It’s an ibaadat
2. Lots of baraq’ah for dua in gatherings. Even if that one person in the gathering and he makes a dua, and it’s
accepted, then everyone’s duas in that gathering will be accepted.
3. Duas made at certain time extra baraq’ah - on Friday especially after adan. Also Tahajjud, Fajr, when finishing
prayers, Iftaar, Suhoor. Whenever you do a good deed, and you make dua, then chances of acceptance is very
high.
4. Make dua for other people. know that #A asks angels to make dua for you for what you have asked for.
5. Do good deeds for others so they will want to make dua for you. When asked sheikh how to remember how to
make duas for others who ask for it. There are 2 kinds of duas:
a. General dua for everyone, khair and aaffia to everyone
b. Make dua for when someone doesn’t ask for it, his/her name is already in their hearts Example: children,
parents.
6. When make a dua, #A removes calamities from your life. When make duas, sometimes see results in the
hereafter.
7. Duas should be an integral part of your heart, so make all the time. It’s a form of ibaadat as talking to #A and
asking Him. Always talking to #A, heart engaged with #A. There’s a relationship/taaluq with #A.
8. Ensure ask #A for khair and aafia. We tend to ask for things not good for us. Carry on with dua, ask #A that give
based on khair and aafia

Every Dua Accepted (ACH)

Should not say that duas are not accepted as saying that #A is not fulfilling our dua. Must have faith, #A accepts our
duas, but they must be in bounds of Shariah. Acceptance in 3 ways:
 ACCEPTED: See dua accepted and comes through
 REMOVE CALAMITY: Instead of granting the dua, removes a calamity. Example: avoid a car accident
 HEREAFTER: If these 2 things don’t happen, then dua will be accepted in the hereafter. Others in Yawm al-
Qiyāmah, will be envious as your duas are accepted in the hereafter.

HADITH #5: HAYA ‫ هيا‬MODESTY IS A BRANCH FROM FAITH

Al Hay’hoo shoo’batoom Minal Imaanee

[Copied from the book: 6. Modesty is a branch of faith (Bukhari, Muslim)]

Learning points: Haya Definition (RIG PLIJI) / 3 Categories (SAU) / 2 Haya Types (MM) / Character Types
(QAIMS)
AlahAyat hood = a branch
La Illahi Illahah= highest branch / lowest branch

Bigger Hadith of 60 branches

 This hadith is part of a bigger hadith.
o #P said: “Iman has 60 or 70 branches, and the best of it is to say “La Illah Illillah” (no deity except God)

P a g e 21 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

o Then he says “Lowest of this branch of imaan, is to remove the harm from the path” Example: remove a stone
on the path is to remove harm to others.
o And #P said: “And Haya is a branch of imaan”. #P talked about no. 1 the highest and the lowest is 60, so then
58 other branches. #P doesn’t mention any other of the other branches except haya.
o If you’re not in a state of Haya all the time, then you’re in disobedience to #A.
 #P said: “If you leave (tastiyah) Haya, then it doesn’t matter (do what you wish).” He says you left everything i.e.,
do whatever you want. If we let go of Haya, then we leave Islam. These are very strong words so we must be
people of haya, that we have guilt in ourselves. Teachers have to be careful to give Hikma, as implementation has
to be done carefully.
Haya Definition (RIG PLIJI)
A lot of people think Haya is modesty, covering up but that’s part of it but not actual meaning/true definition.
 GUILT: Another awliya of #A is Hazrat al-Qasim al Junayd al-Baghdadi (ra) said: “That Haya is that you look at
your blessings and you look at the takseer (shortcomings), and you look at yourself and the state between these
two. When compare these 2 states, that emotional state that you arrive, that is called haya.” Should review your
own blessings and look at your own shortcomings e.g., disobedience from #A, that ‘guilty’ feeling is haya.
 The #P said “that if you leave haya, then do whatever you want.”
 Haya helps to connect a person to deen. We do what #A wants us to do, according to shariah and sunnah,
according to rules and regulations. We’re not animals!
3 Categories of Haya (SAU)
 Haya ul Shareeh – shariah  Haya ul Aqli – intelligence  Haya ul Urfi – culture
 Top state of the three  There are certain things that your  If your
 To have that state to know intellect tells you that are good, culture/surroundings
what shariah says is and what is bad. or environment says
forbidden, what is allowed  Haya ul Aqli cannot supersede that “something is

the boundaries. takes precedence. as doesn’t go against
 Therefore, reason why we  Example: watch TV and ask if Shariah.
must have ilm (knowledge) forbidden/haraam – as TV never  Example: in Pakistan,
so we know what’s the existed during #P times (no the urf is to eat with the

 If one abstains what is using reference below realize that rice is a food
forbidden and what is  When sahaba asked #P about that #P never ate, so if

 Principle i.e. you may have understand is what is
something in front of you that’s permissible and not and
beneficial, but if harm is bigger remain within the
than the benefit/good, then avoid. bounds.
 Same for TV, the Fuqaha would
apply these rulings. Whenever
the harm is more than the good
e.g., TV documentaries, but Haya
Shareeh will tell you it’s bad.

2 Types of Haya (MM)

Haya is a deep topic so many ways to categorize. Haya Mehmood and Mazmoom.

P a g e 22 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

From word Ha mah dah = the one who is praised.

 Haya ul GOOD MODESTY - standup for what is right
Mehmood Haya Mehmood which is praiseworthy
Examples: clothing covering; take care of eyes to stay
(hah mah dah) away from disobedience of #A.
Stay away from any sins

Unpraiseworthy, disliked Haya.

BAD if it's one that makes you want to give up on your
faith as you're too scared to speak up
Means so much shyness, scared to stand up to what's right
in Shariah and instead do what’s wrong.
 Haya ul
Mazmoom Example: cannot wear hijaab or pray 5 times day as family
(meem zah voh don't like it. Know what’s Fard, but too shy to stand up for
meem) what’s right.
Hazrat Aisha (ra) praised the women of Ansaar, said they
are never too shy to ask about anything about Fiqh with #P
because they know it's about their deen. When women too
shy to ask due to modesty, not a good Haya.
Ask question with adab so can follow Shariah

Categories of Haya based on our character (QAIMS)

1.Haya ul Qarin= noble Haya
 Noble Haya- that of a gentleman, or Haya of honour. This haya is of shyness and modesty.
 Best example is #P. Used to be so modest to the point that the #P was very shy. He never looked at women and
men when he spoke, and had very little eye contact because of 2 (biggest) reasons:
o Tavajao is an energy the comes from the eyes and #P had less contact because not everyone was able to take
that energy. Or some people can take a little bit. Has the power to change things inside.
o When a person is righteous and close to #A, they have ability of “farasah” (feel or experience things) and
sometimes they say: “Sheikh has one look is enough to change you.”
o Example: the one look makes you find the strength to cover up every day, do good. This concept from #P as
he carried the most of amount of this energy.
 One reason #P did not want others to be affected by it.
 – Shyness, where trying to protect gaze. Our culture today demands we must have eye contact because if don’t,
then means don’t have confidence or are being rude.
o For teachers, if look/doesn’t look, then both good and bad. When we talk about “gazes meeting” for Haya ul
Urf, and you keep gaze lowered, difficult if want to function in society.
o Example: to be an effective speaker, need to make eye contact.
o In Quran, #A told men and women both have to lower their gazes, BUT if don’t make eye contact, considered
non-engagement. But, there is a leeway in Deen.
 In classrooms, our children should know what is Haya. BUT, they also need to understand what society/culture
requires to function or will be dubbed ‘non-confident’. Teach kids that they shouldn’t look at billboard and
magazines, don’t look at the other person continuously.
 Story: #P passing by and saw Ansaar who was talking to his younger brother 15-year old boy, advising him that he
had too much Haya. #P heard him and said “leave him, why are you telling him that? Haya is from Imaan”.
Shyness is a good thing

P a g e 23 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

 Learning = some children are introverts and others extroverts. Encourage introverts and don’t tell them they’re not
confident.
[Sidebar question from classmate] How wo/men interact in current society? Men are susceptible to
women.
 Step 1: Niqaab is the first physical barrier between man and woman. Based on teacher’s experience, most men
will not approach.
 Step 2: should have firm demeanor, so women who has to speak to a man with a firmer voice tone and stick to the
subject
 Hijaab = barrier between two genders, even within the same room. Haya should be modesty and dressed in a
manner that men cannot tell. This is why the ruling of hijaab – the first rule in Shariah is that women should
remain in their houses. Dress however you like e.g., long skirts, jeans, short sleeves, no issue. But now society,
women have to step out, so the onus falls on the woman to cover up so don’t attract attention.
2. Haya al Albiyat (?)
 = you realize you’re #A’s slave. We’re smaller than a grain of sand, but we still have significance for him,
especially when we consider that #A has created the galaxy and solar system and he created us, and #A says: “I am
watching you with a focus”.
 Hadith from #P: a man worshipped for 500 years 24/7 and went to jihad in the day and prayer all night. Said
wanted life to be pure and die in a state of sajjdah. When he died, he was picked up in state of sajjdah, and goes to
gates of Jannah, #A says allow my Ulb enter to Jannah because of my mercy. However, the man says “wait a
minute. What you mean by your mercy? Did jihaad all day for your sake and worshipped all night you and always
did good all my life, and never bad. Says I deserve it. That was his thinking. #A ordered the scales and puts all the
man’s deeds on one side and puts the blessing of his eyes on the other and scale then tips in favour of eyes. The
blessing of eyes not sufficient enough. Then man starts to cry and asks #A enter me to Jannah to your mercy.
However, #A said take him to the Hellfire. Only if chance to do good, be grateful that #A gave us the opportunity
i.e., tawfiq of #A.”
 Even after praying to #A, still say Astaghfirullah as still don’t do enough.
3. Haya al Ibadaat
 = applies to people of highest rank in deen status like Muftis, Sheiks, Ulema, Fuqaha, teachers and students of
knowledge gaining deen. (Students have among the highest ranks for those gaining ilm and angels spread their
wings under our feet as students, from time leave house, be there during learning until they return home. Being
honored by angels.]
 Haya of lbadaat – to recognize that even though I may be a person of rank, my ibaadat can never be the kind that
needs to be for #A.
 Abu Bakr Sadiq (ra), who was closest to #P, and had highest status after #P, says about him: “I have given back the
favors of everyone, but only #A can give back the favors of Abu Bakr Sadiq”. But despite his rank, Abu Bakr
Sadiq (ra) used to say: “I wish I was an animal, I wish I was a leaf on a tree, I wish I was dust… because I will be
raised up and I will have to give an accounting. How will I account?”
4.Haya al Maklooq
 = from creation from around us. Haya al Maqlooq distinguishes between people’s relationships.
o Example: distinguishes a mother from a wife from other women, or a sister from other women, brother from
another man. This haya is from the maklooq
5.Haya al Sattar
 Sattar = Haya of man. Whatever is from between his navel and knees = awra = is considered private parts for
man and should never be seen by anyone else i.e., needs to be covered at all times.
o For woman, everything is sattar except hands and feet.
o Imam Shaafi (ra) said to his teacher: “I am not retaining things I cannot remember things.” His teacher said
“you must have done something. Think back to what you did.” He recalled he saw the foot of a woman by
P a g e 24 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

mistake a few days earlier and took away his memory. So his teacher said make tauba and your memory will
come back.
o When feel guilty, probably means done something bad. Good feeling as can fix
o Boys playing football: length of shorts does not cover down to their knees.
There’s not compromise on farayd. Salah has to be done. We need to be people of strength.

Aqeedah atia Haviya. Aqeedah = Creed, our belief system. It’s integral to our deen, and it’s not something that’s to
be learnt as we should know it. After the Sahaba Ikraam, there was a period of fitna, so some Imams thought should
be written to formalize into points. Imam Tahavia and Imam Al Asharay wrote them independently, but difference
between the two is insignificant. We choose Aqeedah Al Tahavia but both are Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'ah. We
formally study what our aqueedah is.

HADITH #15: BACKBITING IS WORSE THAN ZINNAH

Al qheebatoo aashahadoo meenaza nah.

[Copied from book: 17. Backbiting is worse than unlawful intercourse (Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al iman).
Learning concepts: Zinnah / 3way connection / 4 swords training

Diseases of the Tongue (Backbiting)

 Zinnah = relations out of marriage. Not allowed in Deen, then no-one will do it. So #P saying that backbiting is
worse than that, so how can we backbite? Both are Al Khabayar (major sins). We are a people that should have
control on our tongues.
 Tongues are amazing organ put in our mouths - can speak, taste. So use for Shukkar versus to complain as there is
a connection between the tongue and the soul.
 The tongue is representative of our intellect as it expresses what’s in our brain, AND because it is also
connected to our soul. Takes images from our soul and makes us utter them and we deliver that utterance in such
a manner, that whatever comes out from the tongue (vocalization), has an impact into our soul so a vicious cycle.
Tongue takes
Brain translates Tongue utters Soul hears whats
images from soul to
images to tongue speech vocalized, impacted
 brain

P a g e 25 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

 If tongue makes dua, then soul goes into state of gentleness, peace etc. So, the soul vocalizes what the soul feels
and we start to cry.
 When our soul/heart is angry, then that image is vocalized as anger and then affects our soul and then repeats.
Soul is disturbed. BE CAREFUL OF WHAT AND HOW WE SAY IT. We must be careful of how we speak.
THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK.
 Fuqaha say major problem with the women is tongue. The disease of immodesty is men and so is the disease of the
eyes.
 Should listen to sermon/Khuttbah at start of class. Rabbana al-ilma (Allah swt grant us knowledge). Should focus
on every task one does, not towards talking.
4 swords of training (SEEP)
The Auliya say “fight against your Nafs

SLEEP little
EAT little – m oderation
Should be based on need but minimum 4 hours.
W hatever your diet is, do it in moderation and with Do not sleep more than 6 hours.
Hikma.
If sleep more, then deficient in something so fix it!
Eating little is a weapon against spiritual disease of
lust, then people fast – should be the kind that is hard
on your body. So that the body becomes weak so body
cannot do that act.
Fasting must be hard, body is delibitated so won’t think
about lusting.
Hadith: W hoever has control between his two thighs 4 SW ORDS OF

altogether. W e need to be taught a lesson, so they come as tests.
A lot of Barakat in remaining silence. So don’t
speak out of necessity.
Umar (ra) said saw Sadiq (ra) holding tongue w two
fingers, he replied: "That “this will take me into the
hellfire.”
Hazrat Isa (as) asked for him to teach them
something into Jannah, he replied leave talking,
students said cannot do that, so Isa (as) said then
"only say good".
W hen two women sit together and we become quiet,
difficult to maintain. W e feel the need to have to
talk to each other.

4 kinds speech - benefit vs no benefit

Good Speech Bad Speech
Good Benefit Pure benefit ? Depending on situation
Zikr, dua, Quran recitation
No Benefit Random Harmful speech
Backbiting
a) Harmful speech
b) Speech has harm and benefit
c) No harm in speech, but no benefit
d) Pure benefit

Diseases of the tongue

 Backbiting – worse than Zinnah. By adultering, then sin against #A so repentance with #A so can repent/tauba. In
backbiting, then sinning against another person.
2-step process to fix backbiting
 1. need to apologise to that person, and then do 2. Tauba to #A.
If try to repent by saying you talked about them behind their back, then could set of a negative chain reaction
within society and could be detrimental.

P a g e 26 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

So, when going to Ummrah/Hajj, general apology, especially if done something direct to their face. Then truly
repent, want to say in their face.
If other person does not forgive you, then that apology is between them and #A. There will come a day, when we
seek the forgiveness of #A and he may not forgive you, if you cannot forgive others.
 #A said whoever dies after repenting from backbiting is the last to enter Jannah. If he did not repent, he will be the
first into Jahannum. We are not forgiven, we will be held accountable and we will all get Jannat, but when?

SELF-PURIFICATION CLASS 7: 17th October

2018
PRE-CLASS NOTES
When learning deen, do not have to stop for Azaan. When happens can reply at one go and made anytime, like in
middle or as soon as he does.

What is backbiting?
 Definition: You say something about someone in his absence, and if he heard it, would be displeased. And even if
what you said was true, then this is categorized as backbiting.
 The Fuqaha say, that if you talk about them would displease them and what you say is a lie, then bigger sin, it’s
“SLANDER” and a major SIN. MUST DO TAUBA.
 Everything we do is a major sin, and we don’t realize that it’s a major sin. It’s an impossible stage to reach so need
to be a people of self-awareness. Our reality of life is filled with major sins.
 Hadith: Hazrat Isa (as) his disciples were walking together and passed a dead dog. His disciple said: “what a
stinking thing”. Isa (as) said the whiteness of his teeth are beautiful (nice thing to say) and said backbiting has a
greater stench. Students were baffled. Then a pig passed by after a few minutes and Isa (as) and says Salams to a
pig i.e. says go in peace (still a Makloof of #A). Disciples surprised and asked if need to speak to the pig like that.
Then Isa (as) said must always speak what is good. SAY ONLY GOOD THINGS OR MAINTAIN SILENCE.
Q: How to avoid backbiting at majlis/older people
Ans: Try to avoid gatherings where backbiting, and if still have to go, be careful.
Ask #A to forgive in the heart and to protect you. Don’t get up and leave the gathering. Try not to be an active
participant.
Unfortunately, when ‘trying to unburden’ thoughts/issues, then avoid names and try to do hikma. We should be
people who are self-contained who have hikma. Understand that the bearer of ‘bad’ news about you from
someone else that maybe ‘incorrect’.
Husbands are not necessarily the best people to take ‘tales of woes’ as may backfire, and negative situation
created – we should look up to our husbands.
Should do a dua of the oppressed which goes straight to #A. If someone sharing marital issues, remember that
divorce is the ‘most hated thing’ of all the halal things so always direct person to goodness.
How to treat backbiting? (Tafaqar/Reflect)
All of us are Insaan and we make mistakes. Must try to fix it. If think you don’t have it, then disease of arrogance
and pride is there. Treat in 2 ways:
1. Do Tafaqar (stories)/Ghaur on the traditions and the stories. Understand the good deeds of whatever
transpires is transferred to the victim. There is a hadith where “Momins will be standing at the Siraat in the
hereafter, their goods will be piled up very high and then there will come a person who says “this person did bad”
so #A will allow it and enable the victims will take one good deed at a time e.g., take Hajj, Ummrah. There will
still be people who have a grudge and hold something about you. Then when all good deeds run out, then you

P a g e 27 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

will then take a bad deed from the other person (goes into Manfiq, minus). So depressing after gathering all good
deeds in this Duniya will be gone. WATCH TONGUE, TRAIN NAFS.

2. Reflect on own shortcomings e.g. Jealousy, anger management. #P says “A momin is a mirror of another
momin” = when look at another Momin, see a reflection of who you are e.g. if see anger, then have anger in
yourself so can identify. If true reflection, it’s debilitating enough and go to the point of frozen. Very dangerous
sign.

Why do we backbite? 5 Reasons (AACSE)

1. Because angry about that person
2. We seek approval of others – so make the other person seem bad so makes you seem look good – likely peer
pressure. Our job should be seeking approval of #A swt. Our level of confidence is such that other people’s
approval doesn’t matter
3. You’ve been caught in crime so defers blame to someone else to save himself
4. When someone wants to self-praise, so he backbites someone else to make himself look good e.g., Sara doesn’t
understand anything, which means I understand everything
5. Backbiting is because of envy e.g. from wealth, knowledge, rank etc.

Harm of tongue = Lying

 Has become part & parcel to our personality. There are ‘white lies’ which is considered insignificant. Lying is
forbidden, prohibited and from the Kabayaar.
 Rehman (ra) said “sin according to the righteous people, the external condition of the man must be like his internal
condition and his internal condition cannot contract his actions and his actions cannot contradict his internal
behavior.” In other words, he says the Sidiqeen are those people whose inward and outward are exactly the same.

HADITH 27: “TRADERS WILL BE GATHERED ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT AS

TRANSGRESSORS, EXCEPT THOSE WHO FEARED ALLAH, WHO WERE RIGHTEOUS
AND SPOKE OF TRUTH
Atooj jaa roo yooh sharoo na yaomal keeyamatee foojaa raan Illah maneetaka wa bara wa sadaka

[Copied from book: 25. Traders will be gathered on the Day of Judgement as transgressors, except those who feared
Allah, were righteous [in their oaths], and spoke the truth (Tirmidhi, Ibn Miija, Diiriml)]
 Example: how managed the cost of products. Abu Hanifah (ra) had a cloth shop and one day passing by his shop
on a cloudy, the shopkeeper was told to close. If someone buys cloth thinking another color because of the
darkness of the day, he would be held accountable.
 Tauriya = making statement literally but hidden meaning that the receiver doesn’t understand. Should be used for
good reason.
 Reference 3 stories of Ibrahim (as) of 3 significant points covering such situations:
(i) asked to go to festival where there was idol worshipping and said was sick to avoid going. Ibrahim (as) said
spiritually sick;
(ii) Said wife was sister when tyrant king taking her away. Ibrahim (as) meant sister in Islam;
(iii) XXXX
Harm of tongue = FALSE PROMISES (LPMCFI)
#P says involved in any of these three, he is a hypocrite

P a g e 28 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

1. When he speaks, he lies – Hazrat Ismail (as) said gave word to someone to meet him to meet at a place, so stood
at that place for 22 days. Same with #P, stood at a place for 3 days. Imagine amount of Istakamaat (patience) to
wait. We have to understand that if break that trust, esp with timing, is hypocrite.
2. When he promises something, then he breaks it / When trusted with something, he betrays the trust
3. Mockery and ridicule – cannot even say this as joking or teasing. Hazrat Aisha (ra) referring to someone short,
#P said was wrong, was backbiting. Understand that there are ‘identifications’ given within names from the olden
days, then not ridicule
4. Cursing – big problem in our society, e.g. “Toom peh lanaat” – it has an effect. May Allah (swt) take that mercy
away from that person. Imagine how dark someone’s heart is to utter those words. When cursing on someone and
the curse is a lie, then Jannah doors shut, and it bounces back to the person. We can only curse those who were
cursed by Allah (swt) e.g., Abu Lahab, Firawan, Abu Jahal, selected. May Allah (swt) send his curse on the liars,
oppressors, people who do filthy things – CANNOT NAME ANYONE
5. Foul language – Has become the norm, especially if the children are saying this. The words “stupid and idiot” are
no longer considered foul. Other than that, it’s foul language. Your tongue is an imagery of your soul. Must
avoid the wrong cycle otherwise become a cycle of blackness.
6. Iddle chatter – can be used in places for hikma e.g. sitting with mother in law but try to divert the topic as
pointless. Very normal in women.

SELF-PURIFICATION CLASS 7: 24th October

2018
[Repeat] HADITH #27: The businessmen will be gathered on the day of judgement as sinners
(futjaraan) except he who has taqqwa and is righteous and speaks the truth
Atooj jaa ro yoosharooona yaomalkiyatmatee foojaran Illah manitakaa wa bara wa sadaka

[Copied from book: 25. Traders will be gathered on the Day of Judgement as transgressors, except those who feared
Allah, were righteous [in their oaths], and spoke the truth (Tirmidhi, Ibn Miija, Diiriml).]
Interesting hadith as #P saying traders gathered on day of judgement with sinners except one with all three qualities
(TRT):
1. Who had taqqwa
2. Were righteous
3. And spoke the truth
 Business was encouraged by #P but should be according to standards. Back then, the way trade works, either lying
or you can break your word or these things that don’t make your righteous. We must be in business of trade, but
can easily be lead to lying.
Example: when go to restaurant and ask a waiter which the best food is, the waiter will refer to the previous day’s
leftovers. This will lead you to land among sinners on the day of judgement.
Example: Cloth sellers letting go of stock saying “at below cost” but not true; or knowingly sell bad quality.
 BE CAREFUL WHICH WORDS ARE CHOSEN.

HADITH 28 CONT: A TRUTHFUL, TRUSTWORTHY TRADER IS AMONGST THE

PROPHETS (UMBIYAA), THE TRUTHFUL PEOPLE (SIDIQEEN) AND THE MARTYRS
(SHUHADAAH)
Ataa jar roosadoo kool ameenoo ma aana umbeeyah na waasadah keena was shuhada ee
P a g e 29 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

[Copied from book: 26. A truthful and trustworthy trader will be in the company of the prophets, the very truthful, and
the martyrs (Tirmidhr, Darimf, Daraqutnf).]
The businessman who is truthful and trustworthy, will be ranked among the umbiyaa, the sidiqueen and shuhaada.
When you are doing the bare minimum (the faryad) is the baseline, then you should know you will get Jannah but it
will not be Firdaws. #P told Sahaba Ikraam and aim for Firdaws and a higher aim than that is #A.
What’s the concept of pleasure if already in Jannah and pure? Enjoyment is anticipation of what is not good for
you… our pleasure in Jannah will be the praise of #A, and that’s what we’ll be loving and enjoying. Our ultimate
reward is meeting and talking to #A. People will be allocated different times, maybe a month, week, day, minute or
never. So #A saying that a trader who manages to remain truthful and trustworthy will attain a very high place.

Ayat of Quran: The people who are granted the highest place in Jannah will obey #A and His Messenger.
#A has blessed the umbiyaa, shuhaada, and sidiqueen – who are sidiqueen? Their outward and their inward are exactly
the same. Whatever is in their heart is reflected on outside and whatever is inside. The person’s whose in/outward
don’t match, they they’re hypocrites. There’s a barrier and blocker. Our outward is we have another face for others.
So, a Siddique has cleansed his heart and is pure.
Quite a deception if you think you can achieve cleansing of the heart on own. Because we use a terminology today
“self-purification” as everyone wants to be their best person and think they can, but delusional. Can manage some
diseases of heart, and those that you can see in your own self. How many diseases can you see in your own heart? But
an onlooker can see a lot more and it’s true. We know our children, husbands and parents. We can see certain things
inside them.
Example: Others can see if you have a problem e.g., jealousy.
The two kinds of people true to you, are your:
a) PARENTS - usually as they continuously do tarbiyaat for your entire life, ultimately want best for you.
Unfortunately, nowadays, parents focus on manners so friends like them vs. teaching for #A sake. Norm in most
houses is use of bad language.
b) TEACHERS – if of ikklaas, their goal/job is to get you to Jannat. Must struggle for it. Concept of Sheikh as well.
We tend to behave in front of our teachers. Teacher invests time/effort and so we give power to teacher, remain
within limits of Shariah and Sunna. Understand, self-purification amount is limited. Need to look into heart =
self-awareness. But must be higher authority over you to say, “be careful,” so develop love and trust of teachers.
So, if do anything wrong, someone can help correct. Fourth step is to be in obedience for #P and #A ultimately
and teacher is just a medium to hook you up and connect to #A – the concept of Sheikh. Teacher leads you to #A
and helps you to remain strong on Deen as end goal is #A.
Taskiyaa of Nafs. Then we’ll work on and put in the higher ranks. Trustworthiness is important e.g., #P waiting for
someone for 3 days. #A gave us limbs, eyes, feet, tongue etc., to be used in the right manner. Note, careful to buy
abridged versions of hadith books, which alters the meaning and breaches trust. BECOME PEOPLE OF TRUST.
Should not have to say “promise” as our word should always be a promise. When take an oath or say “by #A” so have
to say tauba if break oath or may have to pay compensation. If ounce of arrogance in you, cannot even smell the
flowers in Jannah. If not learning, need to work on being humble. Path towards humbleness opens up

HADITH #29: THE SIGNS OF A HYPOCRITE ARE THREE: THAT WHEN HE SPEAKS,
HE LIES; AND WHEN HE PROMISES, HE BREAKS IT; AND WHEN HE IS TRUSTED
WITH SOMETHING, HE BETRAYS IT (THAT TRUST).
Ayatoolmoonaa feqee thaatoon: Idah hada tha kathaba, wa Idtha wa adah aghlafa wa idha wootoo mena ghaana

P a g e 30 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

[Copied from book: 27. The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks he lies, when he makes a promises he
breaks it, and when he is trusted he betrays the trust (Bukhiirf, Muslim).]

Definition hypocrite (munafiq)

– na fa qah is the root which means “tunnel” – so literally “2-faced” one.

Signs for identifying hypocrites (3)

 However small the promise is, must fulfill promise.
Example: instead of saying will take you to the park at 5pm (and may in your mind not mean it), say I will try to
take you to the park at 5pm.
We must keep trust of others. Trust comes in many shapes and forms e.g., can be word, wealth, limbs, eyes etc.

2 Hypocrisy Types – (Religion/Actions)

[**EXAM QUESTION**]. Nafaq (hypocrisy) of…
1. RELIGION (deen) – shown by hypocrites in time of #P whose hearts were not Muslim but claimed to be.
Cannot judge/tell who is a hypocrite, so cannot make assumptions about others’ heart.
Must avoid using word kaffir as we don’t make assumptions about others – it’s a disease of the heart.
When we start to learn, we may start to become patronizing i.e., think we’re better than others. Shaaytan or
Nafs will play with you.
2. ACTIONS (amal) – hypocrisy of action where we know something inwardly, but not doing outwardly.
Example: whether one prays better if think that others are watching. Must make sure actions are not hypocritical.
It’s about struggle, as understand we are not always going to achieve all our goals. #A has given the choice of
right/wrong so cannot always get it right. Humans are ranked higher than angels who are programmed not to do
anything wrong, versus our free will to think good/bad.

HADITH #30: THE MAJOR SINS (KHABEERAH) ARE: TO ASSOCIATE WITH #A,
DISOBEDIENCE OF THE PARENTS AND THE KILLING OF THE SOUL (ANOTHER
HUMAN BEING) AND THE IMMERSING OATH
Alkhaba neroo: Ishraa koo Bilahi, wa orgkhoo koo wa Iledaynee, wa katloonaf see wal yamenool ghamoo soo

[Copied from book: 28. The major sins are worshipping others besides Allah, disobeying parents, killing a human
being [unlawfully], and the immersing oath (Bukhari, Muslim).]
Learning points: Repentance GIP / Minor sins repentance / 4 major sins / :
Lots of khabirah, but #P pinpointed 4. Major sins are only free from khabbirah, is to do sincere tauba, i.e.
REPENTANCE,

3 Steps in Repentance Process (GIP)

1. Feel guilty in the heart such as jealousy, lied, gossiped;
2. Immediately say istighfaar, “I am sorry” and ask for forgiveness;
3. Promise not to repeat. Should keep repenting and if done right, #A will raise your ranks higher and at a time, #A
will give you tawfiq.

P a g e 31 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Minor Sins
 Minor washed away by giving charity/saddaqah, Ummrah, prayer, do a good deeds
 If minor sins keep repeating or becomes habitual, then turns into a major sins
4 Major Sins
 SHIRK - Associate partners with #A. Two types, Shirk al kabbirah – associate any partner to #A.
 DISOBEDIENCE TO PARENTS – Jannah lies under the feet of your mother. The Fuqaha say “the mother,
along with the father” is because mother carries the child for 9 months, goes through process of birthing and then
raises child until s/he can stand on own feet. The parents are like our “Rubb”.
In stories of Yusuf (as), people referred to their leaders at the time as their Rubb as one who takes care of us and
nurtures us. So parents share sifth.
Parents’ ranking is after #A, so we cannot be disobedience to our parents BUT as long as parents are saying in
accordance with Shariah and Sunna.
Example: girl who does hijab (or son grows beard) and parents complain. But they are saying anything against
#A’s command. There’s no obedience in the disobedience to the Creator. If parents go against them and must
be done in a manner that DOES NOT instigate anger or make it hard on your parents. Must become soft with
parents, make alternative comments. Point out other good changes that are also made, especially with outward
actions/content. Cannot go against them.
 KILLING – cannot kill another human being. If happens, must be Qisas (‫ )قصاص‬meaning "retaliation in kind" or
"revenge”. Cannot take another life
 IMMERSING OATH -- can only be taken on #A.
3 Kinds of Oaths (LMG):
1: Yameen-ullah / al-yameen al-laghw – an unintentional oath – when take oath thinking something happened
in the past was true.
Example 1: By A#, your brother has arrived Karachi, but not true.
Example: I take an oath by #A that man came yesterday at 11.30am. But he didn’t’ come, he came at 12pm.
But you were sure as he came based on his information source.
Or take an oath in the future. Both are wrong, but NOT ACT of SINS and no repentance (taubbah/kaffarah)
required.
2: Yameen- Al-Mun'aqidah – an enacted oath – taking oath by #A that ‘something’ will happen in the future.
No tauba/kaffara for it as something that will happen, that one wills/not due.
Example: By #A, I will do xyz.
If he breaks oath, i.e., does not fulfill, then has to pay a Kaffara by priority:
a. Set a slave free;
b. Clothe 10 destitute people (if cannot afford it do next;
c. Feed 10 needy people.
d. If cannot do any of the above, then fast 3 consecutive days.
3: Yameen al-ghamus – an immersing oath – can take an oath on it but are lying about it. Bad oath and does not
require Kafarrah and must repent/ask for tauba.
Example: Attesting a man had an affair with XYZ 10 years earlier. It’s a false oath. [** referred in the book]
6 words/phrases of oath:
1. I swear, must be on #A;
2. I swear by #A;
3. I swear an oath;
4. I swear an oath by #A;
5. I testify;
6. I testify by #A.

HADITH 27 – 33: LYING/UNTRUSTWORTHY/DISEASES OF TONGUE

Pull information from previous lectures. All hadith about lying, being untrustworthy, diseases of the tongue.

SELF-PURIFICATION CLASS 8: 7th

November 2018
An enacted oath – immersing oath
Unintentional Oath – swears on a past incidence. He thinks it’s like he thinks, it but it is not.
If someone is talking about something in the future

HADITH #33A: A MUSLIM IS WHO OTHER MUSLIMS ARE SAFE FROM HIS
TONGUE AND HIS HANDS.
Al mooslemoo man salemalmoslee moon na mil saneehe wa yadeehee

[Copied from book: 31. A [true] Muslim is he from whose tongue and hand other believers remain safe (Bukhari,
Muslim)]
 Musafareen say the tongue is worse than the two.
If you hurt from the hand, the bruises fade away.
But cannot truly forget what has been heard. We should give preference to other people above their own self.
 The Ansari had given everything up when came to Medina – and this brotherly love was quoted many times in our
history. We tend to do good for others when it’s easy for us e.g., give leftover to others. We don’t ‘sacrifice’ i.e.,
make it hard on our own Nafs.
Story 1: After war, there was a Sahabi who heard a sahabi was close to death and went running to give water, but
then the first Sahabi could hear someone else crying out asking for water and so said to water-bearer to give to
the other who was also calling out and again this happened. At the end, the third man died so then the Sahabi
went to the 2nd Sahabi, but he died and then went to the first Sahabi, but he died.
Story 2: Ali (ra) and Fatima (ra) were fasting and then gave whatever dates (food for the day) they had for the
beggar at the door. They kept fasting for 3 days as everyday a beggar would come. See the sacrifices!
 We should reflect: how many times have we harmed people by our tongues and the hand?
 Hitting is wrong in our deen, especially on the face as it’s an honorable part and of respect – if hit the face, it’s
haram and must do Tauba. When “hit” a child,
a. only allowed to hit when teaching Farayad e.g., zakat, fast, pray and not willing to learn
b. child must be 10 years old
c. only can hit with hand, no sticks or belts!
d. hit only on body parts where it does not hurt e.g., on upper arms or legs so pain not as bad;
e. when hit, CANNOT leave a mark on the child e.g., bruise, and that’s abuse.
 Must learn WHY one needs to hit a child. Is it because of own anger issues? Must never hit a child when in anger.
Should always be about the Faraydh. If hit regularly, then will not listen to them so must discipline with Hikma.
 When something bad happens, need so say “Inna lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un.”

P a g e 33 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Fiqh definition of anger

Anger is when you lose control of yourself and act in a manner that take you outside of Shariah and Sunna, i.e., is
haram and takes you out of the bounds of Shariah. Mukhruh al Tahini. Hitting is sometimes allowed and given above]

Hurting others by Actions

 Like breaking other Muslim’s things. Our actions should be such that another person is not harmed by them.
 We must ingrain into all our processes by adding thought before we speak or do things. In our culture, we get
angry with our helpers and it is not constructive as we don’t give them constructive feedback and instead should
give “enough” guidance to fix their behavior.
 We must use different methods to get them to fix behavior.
Example: let the helper practice 5 times until they learn such as bringing a tray with the tea.
Hadith on hikma: Man came and urinated inside the Masjid. #P told the angry Sahabis to let him complete his
act. Then the #P told the Sahabis to cover the urinated spot with earth. Later, the #P said to the man that the
Masjid is a pure place and is not a place where you should be urinating. Learn and use the Hikma and tone
our emotions down! Lots of issues fixable.

HADITH #33B: AND A MOMIN IS HE WHO THE PEOPLE TRUST HIM WITH THEIR
BLOOD (LIVES) AND THEIR WEALTH.
Waal moo meenoo man ameenohoonah soo ala demaaehim wa amwa leehim

[Copied from book: 32. And a [true] believer is he whom people trust with their lives and possessions (Tirmidhi).]

HADITH #33C: AND A MUJAHID IS WHO STRUGGLES WITH HIMSELF (OR IS HIS
OWN NAFS) IN THE OBEDIENCE OF #A AND A MUJAHIR (IMMIGRANT) WHO
LEAVES THE WRONGS AND SINS.
Wal moojaheedin man jaa hada nafsohoo fee taa’atee Lillah
[Need to insert Arabic]
 #P is defining a Muslim as someone who will not take the wealth or life of another Believer. He considers another
man’s wealth and life.
 Hadith in Abu Dawud Sharif: if any Muslim inflicts an injustice on another Muslim, if there’s a pact between them
that they will leave in peace with each other, then he has to answer to #P.

SELF-PURIFICATION CLASS 9: 14th

November 2018
Exam intro: starting on 10th December. Goal is to complete the first 40 hadith in the book.
SB story 1: Driving through rain in Islamabad where there was absolute darkness, but light was behind. Started
thinking about the darkness ahead so thought maybe more rain but was thinking how we are going towards the
darkness and cannot stop – from ease, go through difficulty but no way to change it and if it’s written. When drove
through the darkness, was expecting a lot of darkness but on the other head, miraculously the sun came out
unexpectedly.

P a g e 34 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

SB Story 2: Man climbing on a cliff, then stumbled and was about to fall off the cliff so grabbed a bush as he was
fulling, in his moment of “imminent death”, he shouted “Ya Allah help me” with complete ‘Tawaakul’ and a voice
boomed down said let go of the bush. He said “is there anyone else up there’? Point of story, means he didn’t have
complete faith (tawaakul) and should have let go of the bush
We need to get through difficulties with sabr, without losing hope/anger/heart dying inside and that requires spiritual
strength. We must understand that #A knows best, as He is the best of olanners. So, difficulties have “khair”
(wisdom). We are Insaan (people) so we forget that our Tawaakul in #A has to be complete. Our response/reaction to
the calamity is what counts.
Every Thursday night at 10-12pm Pakistan time, 2-hour gathering of all students including online and is about
‘character on building character’. Learning from him is immense barakaat.

Hadith 33: complete translation: #P is talking about 4 different kinds of people:

a) A (true) Muslim is he from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe and a (true) Momin is who people trust
him with their lives and their wealth and XXX

b) A (true) Mujahahir (warrior) is who struggles with his Nafs in the obedience of Allah and a (true) Mujahir
(immigrant) is who moves away from wrongs (khattaya) and sins (zenubas)
[Add Arabic]

c) And a (true) immigrant is the one who abandons all that is wrong and sins*

[Copied from book: 34. And a [true] emigrant is he who abandons all wrongs and sins (Ahmad, Bayhaqi, Shu'ab al-
iman).]
*NOTE:
 Explanation: There is a foul smell comes out of a person’s mouth when he lies – reaction of an action.
 Definition Taqwaa = “we are a people that has to abstain from sins”, which this is a harder battle as it is hard to say
no to music, put on the hijab/niqab/cover, avoid movies/TV, manage families when know something is wrong and
understand what is right, not put our picture up on FB/WhatsApp.
 When buried, our bodies deteriorate in the graves due to our sins.
Ref story in Medina: where there was a flood and the bodies of the Sahabas bodies came out of their graves and
they were intact and some even still had fresh blood emanating.
 The first thought when something goes wrong and trying to deal with that, first thought that comes is “there are my
sins! It is my fault!” We need to fix those wrongs and trying to improve self and cut down sins in our life.
The Mujahid (true warrior) struggles with his Nafs in the path of #A.

HADITH #24: THE INTELLIGENT (AL KAYSSO) IS HE WHO MAKES HIS NAFS
SUBMISSIVE, AND HE ACTS ( WA AMEELAH BADAUWEE) FOR WHAT WILL COME
AFTER DEATH, (WAL AJEE ZHOO) AND THE STUPID IS HE WHO FOLLOWS THE
DESIRES OF HIS NAFS AND HE HOPES ON ALLAH ( WA TAMMANA AL…).

P a g e 35 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Alkhaysoo man dana nofseehoo wa amelah lemah bahdalmao tee wal’aa jeezoo man tabah ah nafsoahoo hwaa ha
[Copied from book: 22. The intelligent one is he who has subdued his lower self and who has worked for what comes
after death, and the stupid one is he who has put his lower self in pursuance of its desires and who has vain hopes
about Allah (Tirmidhi, Ibn Maja).]
The stupid one continues to sin but has hope that #A will forgive. He is doing what is wrong, knows what is wrong but
continues to do wrong and then says has hope in #A. We must become people who are intelligent (Al Khaysoo), goal
is to get to Jannah.

2 Definitions of Nafs:
1. The SOUL – the “rooh” and what’s inside us, we’re made of this. Your soul leads you to the good, it’s nur.
2. NAFS – is our lower self, and the opposite of rooh. Wants to listen to shaytan, but not governed by shaytan. Our
Nafs has become so fat and well fed so cannot take hardship and doesn’t want to listen. We do what Nafs says and
he justifies ourselves. The Mujahid struggles with own Nafs.

Hadith on Nafs
 #P sent Sahaba to the battle and had won the war, #P said to them “blessed are those who have performed the
minor Jihaad but have yet to perform the major Jihaad”.
 The Sahaba Ikraam were confused as thought that was a major Jihaad. #P clarified, the major Jihaad is the Jihaad
of the Nafs. We are in major versus minor jihaad and we must be successful in Jihaad.
Our Khabireen said 4 swords of training your Nafs
1. Eat little- eat only what is pure so heart remains pure. Over time, eat enough to sustain yourself. Stomach is 1/3
for air, water and empty. A child tends to eat enough. We force them then they become used to it.
2. Sleep little - 4 to 6 hours depending on body type. Teens need to sleep more. We tend not to get out of bed
becomes waste time. We need to get out of bed so not to waste life.
3. Speak little – women don’t understand this concept and we go on and on. Must have purpose to speak.
4. Be patient with people when they harm you – reference is the harm. Must have some difficulty when harming
you.

Nafs
 Sufiyaan ul Tauri (ra), a man of massive knowledge from Khabireen in the 3rd or 4th generation, said “I never dealt
with anything stronger than myself – one time it’s with me, another time it’s against me.” That’s the game of Nafs
e.g., do good like give charity but then limits with the amount given, Rs. 10 vs Rs. 50.
 We tend to blame shaytaan as he whispers in our ears, another part is our Nafs. In Surah Naas, “the one who
whispers in the hearts of people from within the Jinns and the people” so 2 types of shaytaan from Jinns and from
the people, such as our friends and family. Shaytaan usually attacks who are shaky on their path of Islam, who are
trying to fix themselves and trying to become better. Such friends should become acquaintances if trying to push
you off deen, as don’t let them deter them. ACTIONS are bad, but PEOPLE are NOT. Must think “they are still
my friends, I still love them and instead of coffee mornings I will try to bring them to class!”
6-Step Nafs Controls (Reflect/Resolve/Mushaba/Commitment/Guard/Zikr)
The #P said it’s a major jihaad so challenging. Long battle, some ppl can overcome. It’s a battle to the grave. All
about intention.
Example: Niyaa is becoming hifz of Quran, and if make sincere effort and want to struggle for it, then even if
died before completion, then still considered Hafiz of the Quran.
Should always have ‘Talib ul Ilm’ = this was my student studying my deen for my path. We must continue with
the struggle until our graves as I will never be perfect.
Step 1 – Reflect (Blessings/Death/Unachieved)
a) Reflect on blessings first
b) Reflect on death – realize, death is not a bad thing but definitely a calamity. Should celebrate that this person has
gone to meet his Lord. Death is a journey to barzak, transference from one place to another

P a g e 36 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

c) Regret on what you have not achieved – must have guilt on wrongs, but still move forward

Step 2 – have will and resolve/consistency to start struggle against things wrong in Nafs (5)
Need willpower and so MUST pray Tahajjud, even if consistently is to pray 2 rakkat. How to gain resolve, the Salik
(seeker who wants to become closer to #A
1. must clear oneself from all sins
2. must perform obligatory acts (faraydh) e.g., five times namaaz. Must think where are am I going to pray?
3. must make an intention to compensate for all days lost in faraydh and try to make up e.g., namaaz
4. be a human e.g., keep bathrooms clean, put footwear properly, speak in “toom” vs “aap” so talk about a certain
amount of adhaab, sit down to eat (animals stand to eat/drink and not people)
5. be a person of consistency – Salik’s manners should be in the imitation of life of #P. Follow Sunna as closely as
possible. Study “Saadul Talabeen” – start to implement the 30 hadith.

Adab with people of knowledge and teachers, as they are ranked so high as they gift us the word/knowledge of #A.
Should stand when teacher stands and be seated in front when s/he seated. Adab for when give money, must give in
an envelope. We are blessed to give money to someone who will teach as #A allows us to reward the teacher in this
life.
1: Reference the posture of handing money when teacher sitting, should not be standing, should be seated in a mode of
humbleness – be in the same height or lower i.e., when teacher is seated, should also sit.
2: Give haadia in palm, and allow them to pick up haadia

Step 3 – Musahaba = self-examination or accountability (2)

 Examine your intention before you do the deed, and after you do the deed.
 Do deeds only for the sake of #A. And after doing actions, did really do it for the sake of #A? Should account for
oneself’s actions at the start of day
Step 4: Have self-commitment/self-conditioning (Plan/Consistent)
 Means, tell yourself “will not backbite today, and will try best to train my Nafs” and then with sincerity, act upon it
with a firm resolve and try to stick with it.
 When do something for 30 days (or 21 days for westerners) in month of Ramadan, training ground. Likely to stick
to self-conditioning for the rest of the months.
Step 5: Guard against evil (5)
5 points to follow:
1. Constantly concentrate on intentions, guard intention and be vigilante.
Example: give charity for next 20 years. But, need to renew intention and remind oneself WHY giving that
charity every day. Should have an active thinking process of giving Rs. 10 everyday… not done, must renew
intention constantly about why.
Example 2: Why learning? For doing for the sake of #A because want to gain the Qulb for #A, but doing it to
better oneself.
2. Guard against evil by watch the company you keep “soohbah”, keep righteous company.
Reference to hadith keeping the company of a perfume seller and ironmonger. Note, “sahaba” comes from
Soohbah, as they are the company of the #P. Today, highest total is Grand Mufti (mufti azaam), or Sheikh,

P a g e 37 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

Alimahs, Ustadaas… the Sahaba Ikraam are higher than the Muftis, they are the sahabas and they are the
biggest of the titles i.e., were in soohbah of the #P.
3. When guard against evil, keep away from things that can lead you to sin. An action itself may not be sinful but
can lead you to sin.
Example: We cannot go to a restaurant that serves alcohol. Even if food is halal, Fuqaha say not to go as still
alcohol is being served, so best not to go down that path as it may slip.
Step 6: Do zikr of #A
 Whether in form of reading in Quran or prayer, fast or tasbih.
 Shaytan frightens you with poverty and he bids you towards indecency. #A says then promises you forgiveness
from his Grace. And he is all-embracing, all known. #A promises you forgiveness, and get back again. Shayatan
say it will not be good enough and will burn in the hellfire.
 Momin says: “I will fall, and I will keep trying as I have faith and trust in #A.” We lack in that 100% trust in #A.
#A is all-embracing and all knowing.
Story from the book “Wonders of the Heart” by Imam Ghazali (ra):
“1. A wiseman said, Shaytan approaches the son of Adam from the acts of disobedience.
2. If that man abstains from these acts of disobedience, then shaytan comes to him giving advice to cause him to fall
in a form of biddah.
[Example: celebrating #P’s birthday, shaytan moves away from Shariah. Reference the sahabas who never
celebrated his birthday and they love the #P more than anyone else. We should celebrate his birth every single
day, versus on only birth date].
3. If that person refuses to do that biddah, then shaytan makes him doubt regarding his wudu and his prayer [example
3 raqaat].
4. If this person can even push shaytan at this point, then makes that person that the good deeds you are doing are easy
for you to do
Example: Put pride and arrogance in you so say I am saabir (pure), I am very pure].
5. At this point, the man is in great need for there is an extreme degree of temptation and if a man passes through this
stage of pride and arrogance, then he will go straight to the garden of paradise.”

ADDITION for 24Nov18: HADITH 24: THE INTELLIGENT IS THE ONE WHO SUBDUES
HIS NAFS AND HE ACTS FOR WHAT IS AFTER DEATH AND THE STUPID IS THE ONE
FOLLOWS HIS NAFS AND HE HOPES IN #A

Alkaysoo mandana nafsahoo wa ameela lemaa ba’adal mao tee, waal aa jeezoo man atbah ah nafsahoo hawa ha.
[Copied from book: 22. The intelligent one is he who has subdued his lower self and who has worked for what comes
after death, and the stupid one is he who has put his lower self in pursuance of its desires and who has vain hopes
about Allah (Tirmidhl, Ibn Maja).]
Already covered from previously. An important aspect to cover.

Nafs (Ammarah/Luwwamah/
Humans = rooh + nafs

P a g e 38 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

One of the #P's tasks is to train the people to control their nafs, as it leads us to subdue it and it leads us to subdue it. 3
kinds of nafs:

1. An-Nafs al-Ammārah
- “inciting nafs”
 the nafs that wants to enjoy itself. do what it wants to do e.g., processed food, watch movies, wants to go out,
YOLO. We don't only live once and we're in a long series of stages.
2. An-nafs al-Luwwāmah –
 Second stage. “Self-accusing”
 A person who tries to act in the path of #A but he slips. But when he slips, he realizes it. Know should live in the
obedience for Sunna and Sharia.
3. An-nafs al-Muṭmaʾinnah (from Surah Fajr)
 “at peace”- the contented soul, that nafs completely in obedience in #A and has 100% trust in #A. Understands
that whether going through easy/difficult time, know it's from #A, and accepts his fate in a contented manner. So
say "Inna Lillia...." when lost something. Accepts both states are from #A.
 So always peaceful. This person has worked upon himself. This person has struggled over a long period of time
(lifetime) to get to this. Along with remaining with obedience to #A, faraydh, wajib and nafl. Every action is for
the sake of #A. These people will enter into the place where #A's righteous slaves are.
 There's a story from: Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra) - when they were burying him wrapped in his kuffin (cloth) and
when throwing dirt on his coffin, a strange bird came flying and went straight into the grave and disappeared.
Afterwards, there was discussion whether to open the grave to let it out. Thoughts - some say an angel, it was
knowledge... After the burial, while standing on the grave, these ayats from Surah Fajr were revealed. This is the
state we need to reach, which requires major struggle. To get to this state, requires changing our lives and struggle.

HADITH #10: OPPRESSION WILL BE DARKNESS ON THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT

Azoolmu zoolamatoon youma’al qiyamaati

[Copied from book: 9. Oppression will be darknesses on the Day of Judgment (Bukhari).]

Oppression definition = zulm

= put in a place where it does not belong.
Example: Rs. 10 in bag and someone comes and take Rs. 10 from your bag. When someone does something to
harm you,
 Tawheed = belief in oneness of #A; belongs only with #A, and no one else, should be worshipped alone. When
we associate a partner (shirk), then this is a zulm/oppression. In this case, oppression is on ourselves whenever we
associate anything with #A… as #A does not need anything from us so we cannot oppress him.
 #A says zulm is a great oppression. #P now says any oppression will be a darkness on judgement day. The people
who are going to be a Momin, they will carry their own light on judgement day, the sinners/hypocrites will be in
darkness. There will be a wall between the true and fake believers. On one side, there will be mercy and the other
punishment. The disbelievers will cry out to believers and say to them “pls share your light”. #A says cannot share
your light with the false believers. #A also referring as ‘true believers’ and says we should act like a Muslim and
act as a true believer. A true Momin must be the one where the inside and the outside has to match. For believers
there will be no darkness on that day to carry them on the saraaq, it will be as thin as a blade and will cross over to
paradise. The disbelievers will definitely fall without the light.
 Every sin is a zulm = oppression = and will bring darkness with it. Quran: “There will people will have rust on
their hearts and there will be darkness on their hearts and will continue to accumulate until their whole heart
becomes dark.”
Do not Zulm
 Step 1: Get noor/light – by gaining knowledge/ilm of this deen from #A.
What is shariah and what is sunna and then implement it.
Other way is soobha = company that you keep, will bring light or darkness;
Do zikr, will bring light and if don’t will bring darkness;
Intentions which are sincere will bring noor into your heart

 Step 2: Preserve the noor/light –

1. Consistency with actions. Concept of qab/baast – contraction and expansion. Someone affiliated with
spiritual guide and try to make himself better, then the saalik will go through a period of expansion and feel v
good, like doing is zikr = bust/expansion. Then same person will go through Qab/Contraction where he feels he
cannot do that anymore. At this time, need Sheik’s guidance. Through different methodologies, have not
connection with #A.
2. Dua – also have qaab/baast.

P a g e 40 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

3. Soohbah – stay in company of soonah/company of good people. No one is free from not being able to fall so
need people to guide us. So stay in company of the righteous is another way to preserve the noor.

HADITH #14: THE HIGHER/UPPER (GIVING) HAND IS BETTER THAN THE LOWER
(SOOFLAH) (RECEIVING) HAND
Al-yaadool ul yaa khaiyah ghooroom manal ya dahs sooflah

[Copied from book: n. The upper [giving] hand is superior to the lower [taking] hand (Bukhari, Muslim).] [A] To be in
the position of giving something to someone is superior to taking from someone]
The higher hand = giving hand. Lower hand = receiving hand.
#P saying the higher hand is better. Hand that gives is better than the hand that takes.
Visually, when give, the hand is higher. The one who is receiving, his hand is below and is humble. He is better.
Intrinsic to understand, we have been taught in adaab/etiquette when give something with parents, then envelope on
your hand and let them pick it up because the upper hand is better. So, we should keep our hand down, and the one
who takes it, he is the one is humble.

Concept of sabaab
 #A is razaak, written rizk with everyone. From the time your child is born to the time they die, their rizk is written.
The rizk/provision is written, whether in wealth, ilm/knowledge, morality etc. all of rizk is written for everyone
when born.
 Must be cognizant we have been given ability and wealth to give. So, to understand, if we can give Rs. 50k, then
there’s a reason we can give. Then #A put it in your heart to give. Our participation – when we have the choice to
give or not give at that time, we should understand that #A made us the sabaab. If we didn’t give, then someone
else will give. Cannot stop that money from going to someone but if blessed enough to give that amount, then
know that you are blessed as chosen to give that amount.
 Also giving is financially, and is another form of taking care of someone, visiting a sick person, being good to
other people, taking care of kids.
This hadith specifically about financial giving.

Is it haram to beg?
It is haram/forbidden to beg without a need but if there is a need, then it is not prohibited to ask. But 4 conditions to
have:
1. The person asking should not put themselves in a situation of humiliation
2. The Ulema said should not ask for more than what he is in need of
3. He should not harm the person who he is asking, and not threaten
4. When we are in need, first step is make dua to #A to fulfill that need

When give out

Women cannot touch a man so there is not physical contact.
#P always gives, even a small amount.
1. Give money – put in an envelope is better
2. Give gifts/haadiya – certain rulings to remember. Hadith says the higher hand is better than the lower hand.
Teachers should be the upper hands.

Hadith 2019-20

HADITH #16: PURIFICATION IS HALF OF FAITH

Atahooru shaytaarool aeey maan

[Copied from book: 12. Purity is half of faith (Muslim).]

Two things in deen:

1. Muzifoon = cleanliness. Najazaata haqiqi = touch/feel najasa;
2. Tahiroon = purification = that gets rid of najasa hookmi = cannot touch and feel so do wudu and ghusl.

Hadith meaning
 Understood that imaan is referring to prayers so #P says purification is half of your prayers because in the Quran,
where #A uses the word imaan, it is sometimes referred to as prayer
 Purification is half of your faith which is referenced as obedience to #A. So when in a state of purification, then
that’s half of your obedience to #A. And to understand that your taharat is najaazata need to do wudu or ghusl.
o This is hadasah akbaar (major impurity) by removing via ghusl or
o Hadasah asghaar is minor impurity and remove wudu.
 The #P said “when you do wudu, it removes two kinds of sins
o Minor sins = savaaha. Example: Sunna Muqadhair and leave Sunna prayer but if leave habitually then
becomes major sin
o Major sin = Kaba’ir = remove by ask #A for tauba = steps are feel guilty, ask for forgiveness, and make
sincere effort to not do the sin again.

HADITH #20: THE ONE WHO EATS AND IS GRATEFUL IS LIKE THE ONE WHO
FASTS AND IS PATIENT
Atayeemoon ashakaroo kassaa’eemee saabeeree

[Copied from book: 14. The one who eats and is thankful is like the one who fasts and is patient (Tirmidhi, Darimi).]
 Fasting is a special worship and only #A will reward the one who fasts unless you announce it. Worship done
solely for the sake of #A and that’s why #A will give the reward accordingly.
 The one who eats and is grateful, then he is like the one who is fasting and is patient.
o Shukkar – #A said: the one who is grateful to me, I will increase him (in blessings, give barqaat in rizk).”
Every good action/blessing, must always invoke #A’s name.
o Not shukkar = Complains: #A said “And the one who is ungrateful (kafartoon) to me, then for him is a strong
punishment (Azaabi al Shaheed)”. When someone complains, then #A then sends them another situation for
him then he complains again, and then a third… so may continue until he leaves the fold of Islam. Must be
patient
o If #P was not to his liking, he would eat a little and then leave it. So Sunna is if you don’t like the food, then
don’t complain about it. Just leave it and not partake in it. Relationship between husband/wife about food
don’t like, relationship is different as lifelong. So, wife should be cognizant. For feedback at a restaurant,
give honest feedback.

SELF-PURIFICATION CLASS 12: 5th

DECEMBER 2018
HADITH #13: THE TOOTHSTICK (MISWAAK) IS A TOOL OF PURIFICATION FOR
THE MOUTH (LIL FAMEEN), AND IT PLEASES THE LORD.

Asawakoo matharatoon mil famee mar da tool rabbi

[Copied from book: 16. The tooth-stick purifies the mouth and pleases the Lord (Bukhari without a chain [ta'liqan],
Nasa'i, Darimi).]
#P is saying purification of mouth because the usage of miswaak makes #A happy. So #A becomes happy when we
clean our mouth.
 Outwardly clean = najasatha haqiqi
 Najasatha hookmi (inwardly clean) -- Tahural = purification
First thing that #P did when he entered the house would do miswaak as he'd be sitting in the company of others. So
#P used to do miswaak before wudu. Diff of opinion
e) Some scholars say it's a Sunna of wudu
f) Some scholars say it's a Sunna of prayer
g) Abu Hanifa (ra) say it's a Sunna of the deen - so a lot of baraqaat

Why do miswaak?
 Use miswaak No odor, mouth is fresh.
 Can we replace toothbrush with miswaak? The #P’s Sunna is miswaak so complete reward lies to do Sunna. So,
the reward is not the same as the miswaak, first toothbrush. MUST make the niyaa that the toothbrush replaces the
miswaak, but the reward will be less. If make no niyaa, then cannot take the place of miswaak. Make the niyaa
that the replacement is the brush, and not the toothpaste. Example reference of replacement: Breast milk. There is
no replacement for formula. None will ever replace the original.
 Bleeding gums: if choose not to do miswaak because of this, then do not have to do so.
 Nowadays, miswaak is not enough as we have processed foods, which is different, so foods stuck in teeth. In the
old days, we ate big foods, mostly vegetable so raw and organic food. So, scholars say for today use miswaak for
Sunna, but also use brush with toothpaste for cleanliness (nazeefah)
 If choose to use floss, it's fine. No issue. Again, for the nazeefah (cleanliness)
 If don't keep mouth clean, will have an effect on people around us. If action is displeasing to others, then reason to
purify/clean mouth so we don't effect around us. That's why men recommended to do ghusl for Jumma and there's
a lot of people. With so many, makes praying very difficult, as concentration impacted. So it's important for Ittahar
and Nazaffat, very important. Cleanliness of mouth is for people around.
 Cleanliness of mouth is also for the angels. #P says men should refrain from eating onions as angels run away
from them.
 Some mushayad also gave the comment that those who die with kalima on their lips are those with the habit of
doing miswaak.

Hadith 2019-20

HADITH #17: THE QURAN IS A PROOF FOR YOU (LAKA) OR ON YOU (ALAYKA)

Al quranoo hijadoon laka alayka

[Copied from book: 18. The Quran will either be evidence for you or against you (Muslim).]
 PROOF: The Quran is a proof for you or against you on the day of judgement. There are a lot of things will speak
for us or against us:
1. Hands - will use them for the sake of deen
2. Feet, hands... all body limbs will speak for/against for the sake of #A
3. Earth will also testify whether it was mis/used for the sake of #A. Surah Zilzalla, #A said on the day that the earth
will give the news. Example: harm earth by pollution by throwing garbage outside, abused seas etc. Know it is
against our deen
 The same way Quran will speak for me. He will make the effort to read your Kalaam. If choose not to read the
Quran or choose to misuse it (e.g., don't respect it, or use words for black magic) then know the Quran will testify
against you on judgement day. Some people will take it very literally.
 Sometimes the Quran is given so much respect, that people put it away, so difficult to access and end up not
reading it. However, needs to be read and understood.
So Mush’aaf = the physical shape of the Quran i.e., the book, which has more than 50% is the kalaam (word) of
#A. Must be treated with respect (so not used as pillow to sleep on) and not put at level close to feet, should
be raised. Should be easily accessible, next to bedside table and on a bookshelf close to you. Quran is the
kalaam of #A and sent to us to understand and read from it.
 Some ayats easily understood, especially when talking about spiritual diseases of the heart, stories for lessons.
However, some ayats need interpretation and understanding should come via traditional teachers from
understanding of the first three generations of #P.
Example: Coffee mornings to discuss Quran ayats but need to have traditional scholars present. Should not do
personal interpretations. So, follow opinions of the first three generations. Who are we to interpret?
 Only Grand Sheikhs who gained the great ilm can write books and they will still reference the first 3 generations
after #P versus their own interpretations i.e., Never put their own opinion on it.
 INTERCESSION: hadith where #P said "#A will accept the intercession (shifaa'at) of Quran".
Another hadith "The Quran will fight with the people. Why didn't act upon you and why didn't you act upon you?
You did not give me my right which was due."
Need to understand Quran has its rights and if you gave it’s rights in this duniya, then it will stand and give proof
for you e.g., did not understand the Arabic, and will stand as a proof against you.
 CURE: The Quran is Shifa: all of Quran is Shifa. It's a cure. Read anything from the Quran. Pick up from
anywhere and know it will give you Shifa.
There are certain incidence: Sahabi came across someone very sick, so said that #P said it has shifa. So he blew
"Surah Fatiha" seven times. Sahabi later asked #P and he said it was fine. Understand the whole Quran is
Shifa.
#P sent as a purifier to the people. #A gave an immense blessing upon us. His task as a messenger to the #P.

#P had 4 Tasks (Quran/Taskiya/Shariah/Sunna)

1. Teach Quran - what is in the Quran will spiritually purify us, by cleansing our hearts
2. Purify, do our taskiya - #P used to do taskiya (purification) with companions e.g. pray this way, do Tahajjud.
Example of correcting (taskiya) - Abudllah ibn Abbas (ra) - #P said about him and talking to another Sahaba,
said AIA is a very good man, but would be better if he prayed Tahajjud
3. Teach Shariah - how to pray, do Hajj, pay zakaat. Taught through his action

P a g e 44 | 45
Hadith 2019-20

4. Teach Sunna - the best way to live via his speech and actions. So important to understand its not academic
learning.
Hasaba soofa. Scholars of the deen wrote his every action down. The Sahaba followed his actions. When #P
came back from his fajr prayer and women would come out with water and asked #P to put in his hand into
each of their water vessels so the water would be blessed. Should notice how they sit, stand and talk. Do they
remain silent or do they talk? This a more effective way of learning than books.
Problem with our Ummah in Pakistan - memorized the books but they have no practical implementation in their
lives.
Another way for taskiya is via reminders - this advice is meant for me. Most of us should walk about hearing
advice for self. Right now, individual 'taskiya', is hard as individuals' ego is very high. We always need to
say we have this problem when we hear the recordings. And if truly don't have the problem, then still
working on the nafs.
