Pumps Exercises Problems

Name:
Student No.
Problems:
1. A double acting, single phase, centrifugal pump delivers 900 cu.m per hour of
sea water (SG=1.03) from a source where the water level varies 2 m from high
tide to low tide level. The pump centerline is located 2.6 m above the surface of
water at high tide. The pump discharges into a surface condenser, 3 m above the
pump centerline. Head loss due to friction is the suction pipe is 0.8 m and that in
the discharge side is 3 m. Pump is directly coupled to a 1750 rpm, 460 volts, 3
phase and 60 hertz motor. Calculate: (a) the total head in ft.; (b) the specific
speed; (c) brake HP if efficiency is 82%. Ans. 37.39 ft; 5151 rpm;47 HP

2. A pump is to deliver 80 GPM of water with a discharge pressure of 150 psig.

Suction pressure indicates 2 in Hg vac. The diameter of the suction and
discharge pipe are 5 in and 4 in respectively. The pump has an efficiency of 70%
while motor efficiency is 80%. Calculate the power input to drive the motor in kW.
Ans. 9.4 kW
