An abrasion is a wound produced by scraping or rubbing, resulting in removal of the superficial layer. Skin abrasions may
remove only the epidermal layer.
A contusion, or bruise, is a wound usually produced by a blunt object and is characterized by damage to blood vessels and
. extravasation of blood into tissues.
A laceration is a tear or disruptive stretching of tissue caused by the application of force by a blunt object. In contrast to an
incision, most lacerations have intact bridging blood vesselsand jagged, irregular edges.
An incised wound is one inflicted by a sharp instrument. The bridging blood vesselsare severed. A puncture wound is
· caused by a long, narrow instrument and is termed penetrating when the instrument pierces the tissue and perforating
when it traverses a tissue to also create an exit wound. ·
· Gunshot wounds are special forms of puncture wounds that demonstrate distinctive features important to the forensic
· pathologist.

drowning. ' Al 1995
* In fresh· water drowning, large quantities of water cross the alveolar membrane into circulation and
produce hypervolaemia. The red cells swell or burst and baemolysis ensues with liberation of
potassium. The ciculation may suffer 50 percent dilution within 2-3 minutes. The heart is therefore
submitted to the insult of anoxia, hypervolaemia, Potassium excess and sodium deficit. Anoxia and
potassium excess lead to ventricular fibrillation and death in 4-5 minutes.
* In salt water drowning, the marked hypertonicity of inhaled water causes loss of fluid from the circulation
into the lungs giving rise to fulminating pulmonary edema with progressive hypovolemia, circulatory shock,
and eventually cardiac standstill or asystole, in about 8-12 minutes.
2. Dry drowning
In dry drowning water does not enter the lungs, but death results from immediate sustained laryngeal spasm
due to inrush of water into the nasopharynx or larynx.
3. Secondary drowning or near drowning /Post immersion syndrome
Near Drowning is defined as initial survival at least beyond 24 hours of an individual after suffocation due to
submersion in fluid. It does not necessarily lead to long term survival and is associated with secondary
complications, which require further medical management.
4. Immersion syndrome or Hydrocution
Hydrocution or immersion syndrome refers to sudden death in water due to vagal inhibition as a result of
• Cold water stimulating the nerve endings of the surface of the body,
• Horizontal entry into the water with a consequent strike on the epigastrium
• Cold water entering ear drums, nasal passage, and the pharynx and larynx which cause mucosa/ nerve
endings stimulation

J Widmark's equation
• Widmark, a Swedish physician did much of the foundational research regarding alcohol pharmacokinetics
in the human body.
• In addition, he developed an algebraic equation allowing one to estimate any one of six variables given the
other five. Typically, we are interested in determining either the amount of alcohol consumed by an
individual or the associated blood alcohol concentration (BA() given the values of the other variables.
Widrnark's equation relates. these variables according to:
. N = W r (Ct+ Bt)/O.Sz
where:
• N = the number of drinks consumed
303
• W = body weight in ounces
• r = volume of distribution (a constant relating the distribution of water in the body in L/Kg)
• Ct = the blood alcohol concentration (BA() in Kg/L
• B = the alcohol elimination rate in Kg/L/hr
• t = time since the first drink in hours
• z = the fluid ounces of alcohol per drink
• 0.8 =the density of ethanol (0.8 oz. per fluid ounce)

Is a test to detect truth. In this test subject's imagination is neutralized by making him semiconscious. In
this state it becomes difficult for him to lie. Drugs used for the purpose are
• Scopolamine hydrobromide
• Sodium Amytal or sodium pentothal (TRUTH SERUM)
• - Sodium Seconal

imaginary threads from clothes, bed sheets
./ Drowsiness
./ Dilated pupils
./ Diplopia
./ Drunken gait
./ Dilated blood vessels
./ Dry and hot skin and flushing of the face
./ Death due to respiratory failure
Fatal dose: 1 gm (100 seeds)
Fatal period: 1 day
Treatment: Potassium permanganate + tannic acid, for gastric lavage, Physostigmine is specific anti dote
= Aconite Poisoning
Signs and symptoms of aconite which is also known as "Monks Hood", Wolf Bane". All the species of the
plant is poisonous so the name "Bish" or "Bikh" meaning the poison is used for them.
Has sweetish taste which gives it the name Mitha Bish (sweet poison) .
...., Tingling followed by numbness of mouth and throat is characteristic symptom of aconite poisoning .
...., Salivation (not excessive), nausea, vomiting
...., Muscular weakness, convulsion
...., In early stage pupils alternately contract and dilate (HIPPUS) but dilated in the later stage .
...., Hypotension, cardiac arrhythmia and AV Block
...., Death may occur from shock or syncope but usually occurs from asphyxia due to paralysis of the
respiration.
Treatment - Milk or activated charcoal, stomach is washed with potassium permanganate. Atropine is given
to avoid vagal inhibition. Artificial inflation and oxygen inhalation.
• Tracer Bullet: This type of bullet leaves a visible mark or 'trace' while in flight so that gunner can
observe the strike of the shot.
• Dumdum bullet: Tip is chiselled out, it fragments extensively upon striking.
• Express bullet: Bullet with a hole
• Ricochet bullet: Before striking the object aimed at, it strikes some intervening object first, then .after
rebounding, it hits the target.
• Yawning bullet: It traverses in an irregular fashion, causes a key hole entry wound.

• Souvenier bullet: Left in body for a long time, surrounded by dense fibrous tissue.
• Tandem bullet: 2 bullets are present in the same cartridge which enter the target object at different
points. PIGGYBACK bullet/ TANDEM bullet (tandem =one behind the other): Two bullets are ejected one
after the other, first bullet failed to leave the barrel and is ejected by subsequently fired bullet.
~ Electrical Injuries
,,. Joule burn: contact electrical and endogenous burn.
,,. Crocodile flash burn: high voltage burn. Multiple lesions due to 'arc effect'. Metal particles and the skin at
the site of entrance. Death due to ventricular fibrillation.
,,. Current pearls and wax drops seen on radiology.
,,. Lightening stroke: It is an electrical discharge from the cloud to the earth.
,,. Filligree burn/ litchenburg's flowers: superficial, irregular, thin resembling the branches of a tree also
known as "arborescent b~rn". Most common site is shoulder flanks. Cause is staining of tissues with Hb due
to rupture of smaller blood vessels along the path of current.
./ Due to direct effect of current of very high voltage, cardiorespiratory failure or sudden cardiac arrest is
likely to ensue .
./ Burning by the flash of lightening .
./ The atmospheric gases become heated to 20,000 c, and this heating of gases in the path of lightening causes
an explosive expansion. Blast effect of the rapidly expanding air which may tear the clothing and impart
suspicion of foul play .
./ Compression effect due to air movement in its return wave produces the changes. So compression effect is
after the flash.
~ Suicidal Injury
• is on limited accessible areas of the body such as throat, wrist, elbow, or groin for incised wounds:
• left side of the chest over the heart, and abdomen, for stab wounds; and
~ Homicidal Wounds
• Incised wounds on the nose, ears and genitals are usually homicidal and are inflicted on account of.
jealously.
• Stab wounds over the back are almost always homicidal.
• Stab wounds over the abdomen, chest and limbs, other than over the heart area are suggestive of homicide.

• Chop wounds of head, face, neck shoulders and extremities are suggestive of homicide or accident.
• wounds of the head especially over the vertex, if accidents are excluding are presumptive of homicide.
• Defence injuries- Presence of defence injuries indicate a homicidal attack. However their absence does not
rule out a homicidal attack for it is possible for the victim to be incapable of defence.
3. Hydrostatic. force- Hydrostatic forces increase the impact of injury. When fluid distended hollow organs are
hit by the bullet,· extensive lacerations are produced due to the explosive displacement of the liquid in all
displacements.
• Treatment:
• Gastric lavage is avoided
• Patient is kept on 02
• Routine antibiotics are not indicated
• Corticosteroids have little beneficial effect.

:> DNA Profiling (also called DNA testing, DNA typing, or genetic fingerprinting)
High Yield AIPGME2011/2012
* Is a technique employed by forensic scientists to assist in the identification of individuals by their
respective DNA profiles.
* DNA profiles are encrypted sets of numbers that reflect a person's DNA makeup, which can also be used
as the person's identifier.
* DNA profiling should not be confused with full genome sequencing. It is used in, for example, parent
testing and criminal investigation.
* DNA profiling uses repetitive ("repeat") sequences that are highly variable, called variable number
tandem repeats (VNTR). VNTRs loci are very similar between closely related humans, but so variable
that unrelated individuals are extremely unlikely to have the same VNTRs.
For highly degraded samples, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is sometimes typed due to there being
many copies of mtDNA in a cell, while there may only be 1-2 copies of the nuclear DNA.
Forensic scientists amplify the HV1 and HV2 regions of the mtDNA, then sequence each region and
compare single-nucleotide differences to a reference.
Because mtDNA is maternally inherited, directly linked maternal relatives can be used as match
references, such as one's maternal grandmother's daughter's son.
A difference of two or more nucleotides is generally considered to be an exclusion.
mtDNA is useful in determining clear identities, such as those of missing people when a maternally
linked relative can be found.
mtDNA can be obtained from such material as hair shafts and old bones/teeth.
