The document discusses the concepts of structural stability and determinacy. It defines degree of static indeterminacy as the number of unknown forces minus the number of available equations of static equilibrium. It states a structure is statically unstable if the degree of static indeterminacy is less than 0, determinate if it is equal to 0, and indeterminate if it is greater than 0. It also discusses internal and external stability of trusses, defining internal stability as the truss maintaining its shape when detached from supports, and external instability as instability due to insufficient supports.

Department of Civil Engineering DUET, Gazipur. Stability and Determinacy
Degree of Static Indeterminacy (DOSI)
= Number of unknown forces – Number of available equations of static equilibrium
1) DOSI < 0: statically unstable
2) DOSI = 0: statically determinate 3) DOSI > 0: statically indeterminate Stability and Determinacy m = number of members r = number of reaction components j = number of joints h = number of hinges TRUSS
Internal Stability: number and
arrangement of members is such that the truss does not change its shape when detached from the supports.
External Instability: instability due to
insufficient number or arrangement of external supports. First condition: always true. Last two conds: true if and only if the truss is geometrically stable.
