INTRODUCTION

(Discuss the brief introduction overview of the Learning Activity specially the
learning strategies you used to do this) ASYNCHRONOUS LEARNING ACTIVITY

- Identifying Network Devices and Cabling-

Objectives

Part 1: Identify Network Devices

• Describe the functions and physical characteristics of the network device.

Part 2: Identify Network Media

• Describe the functions and physical characteristics of the media.

Background / Scenario
As a member of the networking support staff, you must be able to identify a total of 12(Twelve) different
Network Devices listed as follows: 2 (Two) for each of the categories listed.

Refer to your Packet Tracer Network Devices (Routers, Switches, Hubs, Wireless Devices, Security
and Wan Emulator).
Another 10(Ten) different Network Media: 6 (Six) for connections and 4 (Four) for Structured Cabling.

Refer to your Packet Tracer Network Media (Connections, Structured Cabling).

You must also understand the function of equipment in the appropriate part of the network. Research it.
In this activity, you will have access to network devices and media. You will identify the type and
characteristics of the network equipment and media.

Part 1: Identify Network Devices

Fill in the table below with the device tag ID number, manufacturer, device model, type (Routers, Switches,
Hubs), functionality (wireless, router, switch, or combination), and other physical characteristics, such as
number of interface types. The first line is filled out as a reference. (Example is excluded in the count.)

ID Manufacturer Model Type Functionality Physical Characteristics

2 Gigabit Ethernet Ports
2 EHWIC slots
1 Cisco 1941 Router Router 2 CompactFlash slots
1 ISM slot
2 Console ports: USB, RJ-45
Cisco 300 Switch Switch Capacity for 48 ports available. Capacity
of number of VLAN networks 256

Part 2: Identify Network Media

You will name the network media, identify the media type (copper, fiber optic, or
wireless), and provide a short media description including what device types it connects.
Use the table below to record your findings. The first line in the table has been filled out
as a reference. (Example is excluded in the count.)

ID Network Media Type Description and to What It Connects

Connect wired NIC and Ethernet ports on network
1 UTP Copper devices Cat 5 straight-through wired. Connects PCs and
routers to switches and wiring panels.
Serial Console Copper Connects devices to a switch or router to program them
2

UTP cross over Copper Connect like devices on a network, CAT 5 cross over,
3 connects switches to switches, etc

Cable Coaxia Copper They are used in network devices such as televisions,
4 modems among others.

Optical fiber multimode It is used in local networks to connect devices such as

5 modems, routers and switches.

Shielded Copper Wires are wrapped in foil and twisted to prevent

6 Twisted-Pair crosstalk and outside interference

Reflection
After you have identified the network equipment, where would you find more information about
the equipment?
Yes and I found on the manufacture’s website
