Exercises Problem on Keys and Couplings

Name:

Student No.

Problem:

A flange coupling is to connect two 2 ¼ in shafts. The hubs of the coupling are 4 3/8 in
diameter and 3 5/8 in thick/length and the flange webs are ¾ in. Six 5/8 in bolts in 6 ½ in
diameter circle connect the flanges. The keyway is ¼ in shorter than the hub’s thickness
and key is 9/16 in x 9/16 in. Coupling is to transmit 60 HP at 160 rpm. For all parts, yield
point in shear is one- half the yield point in tension or compression which is 65,000 psi.
Find the following stresses and factors of safety based on the yield point:

a. Shear and bearing in the key

b. Shear in bolts
c. Bearing on bolts in the flange
d. Shear in the flange at the hub
e. Shear on the shaft neglecting the effect of keyway

What is the factor of safety of this coupling?
