(1) A piston-cylinder assembly contains 0.1 kg of superheated steam at 150oC and 1 bar
pressure. If 23 kJ energy is removed from the steam while pressure is held constant, determine
the final state of steam using Mollier diagram

(2) Determine the specific volume of refrigerant-134a at 1 MPa and 50°C, using (a) the ideal-gas
equation of state and (b) the generalized compressibility chart. Compare the values obtained to
the actual value of 0.021796 m3/kg and determine the error involved in each case.

(3) A rigid tank of volume 1 m3 is filled with 180 kg CO2. The tank is left in the vicinity of a
furnace and after some time, the temperature of the tank is found to be 91.8 oC. Calculate the
pressure developed by CO2. Make use of two parameter compressibility factor correlation. For
CO2, Tc= 304.2 K and Pr =73.87 bar

(4) Repeat (3) by making use of the three parameter compressibility factor correlation. For CO2,
ω =0.239

(5) Determine the specific volume of superheated water vapor at 10 MPa and 400°C, using (a)
the ideal-gas equation, (b) the generalized compressibility chart, and (c) the steam tables. Also
determine the error involved in the first two cases (HW)
