Miss Maudie Atkinson is one of the optimistic characters from Lee Harper's novel To Kill a
Mockingbird. She is a skilled gardener and a cook who specialises in making delicious cakes. Unlike other
characters of the play, Miss Maudie does not think ill of Boo Radley rather reveals to Scott that Boo
Radley (also known as Arthur Radley) was a decent child during his young age and the present bondage
might have caused him to be indifferent and abnormal compared to others.

Miss Maudie's hospitable attitude towards Scott influences her to like Miss Maudie's accompany and
her optimistic attitude towards Arthur Radley gives Scott about slight comfort regarding the phobia she
had about Arthur Radley.

Miss Maudie is a truthful person who chooses not to belittle Arthur based on rumours spread by people
but rather she continues to judge Arthur based on her past sight of Arthur. Miss Maudie is an
independent women who does not like religious fundamentalism. This is evident from her remarks
about Arthur Radley's father Mr. Radley that some people with Bible in their hands are more dangerous
than some people with wine their hands.

Overall we can say that Miss Maudie is the only character in the novel who chooses not to judge people
based on rumours and create the most positive impression on the novel’s central character Scott.
