BRINGING OUT THE BEST IN RESEARCH WRITING AND PUBLISHING — A

REFLEXIVE JOURNAL

An organized webinar by the FEU Institute of Nursing in cooperation with the

University Research Center was conducted on September 25, 2020 with the theme “To
Publish or To Perish? Writing and Publishing a Research Paper”. The webinar per se
has distinctively notable speakers namely Dr. Tom Olijhoek, Dr. Nidhi Agaral and Dr.
Jocelyn Hipona who discussed points, information and guidelines regarding work writing
and publishing process.
Learnings for the webinar talks are essential for us, students, to utilize in our
current research work status. A work of writing and publication may seem too complex,
but with the assistance of the webinar learnings objectives, it made things clearly with
direction. What I learned about the process was its outcome must produce a
publishable comprehensive output that has an addition to a certain field like our very
own— the nursing field.
One of the remarkable acquired knowledge embedded in my mind is the think,
check, and submit process of writing and publishing a work per se. This is a great
reminder for us, nursing researchers, to think if our craft is about to be published, it
should be contained with original results or method or perhaps a significant
enhancement of a published work and up-to-date review of a field or subject— that
advanced a specific field my work falls under. The webinar has numerous learnings by
three honorable speakers who have shared their experiences on publishing a work and
the proper ways and guidelines on the working and publishing process. Through the
webinar, I was able to grasp the article type that I should be using so as to achieve a
comprehensive and substantial work and the right way to choose a journal, its
structures, and effective manuscript titles. Furthermore, guidelines through utilizing the
rule of 10 in producing an abstract was also discussed. The speaker mentioned that an
abstract must have 1-2 sentences for the research’s aim, 2-3 sentences for its materials
and methods, 2-3 sentences for the results, and 2 sentences for its
discussion/conclusion. Proper ways of creating the introductory part of the research are
mentioned as well as the methods, results, result visualizations, discussion, conclusion,
acknowledgements, and references were covered by the talk Covering letters and
conflict of interest was also discussed. Hence, the overall webinar gave me a guide in
bringing out the best in research writing and publishing.
Significance of a yielded work or an output from the writing process is to be
openly accessed by people who aspires and wants to read, research, and
learn—especially students. As one of the speakers mentioned, published materials are
widely available on the internet and most of them are accessible; it is so called open
access. Published original works with positive yielded results and discussions will play a
role as a tool or source for guiding the process of research of students. Hence, its
impact is to be a tool for reading, reference, and a source of new information. Essential
works and significant research is a permanent published work that can be an underlying
support for generating new research; making it extensive, notable, and comprehensive
enough to support claims and be a solution to a problem.
