CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Adolescents are conscious about their body image especially if they’re having

facial skin problems. This study aims to produce a soap that can treat acnes or

pimples, black heads, white heads, tinea versicolor (an-an) and other facial skin

problems. The researchers made a soap called Guatel Soap (Guava and Betel Leaf

extract), which can help treat and prevent those facial skin problems.

Use of Betel Leaf (Paan or Nga-nga) and Guava Leaf (genus Psidium)

extract in making soap. Betel leaf that is rich of different vitamins: Vitamin C

especially for skin, the anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce swelling and

itching and kills the acne-causing bacteria. The freshness will kill the odor-creating

germs on the body because of its subtle yet alluring smell. If the skin is sensitive and

prone to skin rashes and allergies, the betel leaf extract soothes down the symptoms of

the allergy.

Guava leaf extract are full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents,

and problems related to oily skin. Antioxidants that may protect skin from aging and,

for scars and brown spots, a natural skin tone lightener.

The researchers made this soap because weather, inheritance,

environment, and lifestyle are one of the major problems that influence those facial

skin problems to happen. This is an affordable soap because the main ingredients are

mostly found in New Taugtog Resettlement Area Botolan, Zambales. The respondents
will instruct to use the Guatel soap three times a day. The time duration of using this

product to see the result will be in 1 week period of time.

Significance of the Study

Guava and Betel Leaf usually found in residence of NTRA Botolan, Zambales

which will be used as the main ingredients to make soap. The researchers are aiming

to decrease or solve acnes, white heads, black heads, tinea versicolor (an-an) and

other facial skin problems.

Community - This study will help the NTRA, Botolan, Zambales to produce another

source of income or livelihood.

School – This study will become one of the legacy and pride of New Taugtog

National High School in NTRA, Botolan, Zambales.

Teacher – This study will serve as a new knowledge for the teachers on how to

prevent and solve facial skin problem so they can teach and share to their students.

Students – This study will help the students of NTNHS in NTRA Botolan, Zambales

to solve their facial skin problems and be aware of the product as an alternative and

affordable one.

Future Researcher - This study will help them feel inspired and soon will make and

promote another solutions to solve facial skin problems.

Statement of the Problem

Acnes, white heads, black heads, tinea versicolor (an-an) and other skin

problems because of weather, inheritance, environment, and lifestyle are one of the

major problems of people nowadays and it is greatly affecting their focus and

interaction to other people because of shame.

1. What are the demographic profiles of the respondents in terms of?

1.1 Age;

1.2 Sex;

1.3 Track/Strand; and

1.4 Facial skin problems

2. Is Guatel soap helpful for removing facial skin problems?

Scope and Limitation

This study aims to make facial skin soap out of Guava and Betel Leaf where it

nearly found in residence NTRA, Botolan, Zambales but not concerned on any other

part of Guava and Betel plants. This study targets the 10 out of 101 SHS enrolled

students with different track/strand of NTNHS experiencing of facial skin problems.

The respondents will instruct to use the Guatel soap three times a day. The time

duration of using this product to see the result will be in 1-week period of time.
CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE and STUDIES

According to Koh, (2011), Guava leaves contain phytochemicals that are

astringent, allowing them to tone and tighten your skin. Guava leaves can also protect

against ultraviolet radiation, a ‘major environmental factor’ in ‘skin wrinkle formation

and hyperpigmentation’.

Making soap out of Guava Leaf Extract – Ingredients: about 50 guava leaves, 16

oz. water, 4 oz. sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye or caustic soda, 20 oz.

olive oil, 8 oz. coconut oil, a few spoonfuls of lavender-scented oil, a few drops of

food coloring, any color you like, and vinegar (in case the lye comes in contract with

skin). Equipment: stove, large pot, three small containers, gloves, safety mask, safety

goggles, whisk or stick blender, strainer, kitchen scale, funnel and soap dispenser or

empty bottle. Make sure that none of the equipment you use contains aluminum, tin,

or zinc because lye will corrode all of those metals. Steps: 1. Extract guava leaf

essence, 2. Strain out guava leaves, 3. Prepare your flavors, 4. Saponification, 5. Stir.

According to Reyshan, (2017), Guava is rich in tannins, phenols, triterpenes,

flavonoids, essentials oils, saponins, carotenoids, lectins, vitamins, fiber and fatty

acids. Many of these guava therapeutic activities are associated with the flavonoid.

Flavonoids have demonstrated antibacterial activity. Guava also has antioxidant

properties that are associated with polyphenols found in the leaves.

Guava Leaf Soap – A. Guava Leaf Extract: A total of 50 grams of fresh green

guava leaves at 250 ml of water input and boil for about 10 minutes. B. Materials:

One-half cup vegetable oil or cooking oil (approximately 300 ml), 3 tablespoons of
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) (approximately 15 grams), 500 ml of water and 250 ml of

guava leaf extract. C. Making Soap: A total of 500 ml of water and one-half

vegetable oil / fry mixed and stir for about 30 minutes. Pour the guava leaf extract in

water and oil solution, and stir for 30 minutes. Then add 3 tablespoons of caustic soda

and stir for about 30 minutes. After starting to solidify the mixture into the mold and

cooled or dried in a place not exposed to direct sunlight.

Conceptual Framework

Research Methodology

This chapter describes the method and procedures in making soap out of

Guava and Betel Leaf extract. It includes materials used, tools, and equipment

required construction procedure, tryout, revision, and testing. This research will be

conducted through questionnaire and observation.

Research Design

The researchers will use experimental method design in demonstrating the

acceptability of making Guava and Betel Leaf Soap. The study analyzed and observed

by the researchers with quantitative collective data. The researchers will be

conducting a survey with 12 questions for the 10 selective SHS students of NTNHS

who have a lot of skin problems such as pimples. By this process and data collected

with the use of statistical treatment. This method will help the researchers to

understand and acquired what they wanted to become the result of the research. It also

revealed certain problems in the statement of the problem, so that remedial changes

can be made immediately.

Locale

This study was conducted in New Taugtog National High School. It was

located in New Taugtog Resettlement Area, Botolan, Zambales.

Where:

P (%) = Percentage (%)

F = Frequency

N = Number of respondents

100 = Constant Variable

Materials

Guava Leaf extracts (1/2 tsp.)

Betel Leaf extracts (1 tsp.)

Soap base (200 grams)

Menthol base (1/4 tsp.)

Glycerin (1/4 tsp.)

Mint Fragrance ()

Water

Mortar and pestle

Double Boiler

Clean stainless container (3)

Silicon mold

Syringe (2)

Procedure:

1. Take 200 grams of soap base.

2. Cut it onto small cubes.

3. Extract Betel and Guava leaves using a mortar and pestle.

4. Put the extract and crushed Betel and Guava Leaves in a different syringe.

5. Melt the soap base in a double boiler method.

6. Add 1/4 tsp. of Glycerin in the melted soap base.

7. Add ¼ tsp. of menthol base in the mixture.

8. Mix well. Stir continuously.

9. Add ½ tsp. of Guava Leaves extract in the mixture.

10. Add ½ tsp. of Betel Leaves extract in the mixtures.

11. Pour the mixture in a silicon mold.

Testing 1

The researchers used Sodium Hydroxide to make soap along the main

ingredients which is Betel and Guava Leaf extract. The result is different from what

the researchers expected the mixture of Sodium Hydroxide, extracts and coconut oil

produce an awful smell. It smells like cement and the stainless steel container melts

like an ice. The outcome of the product failed as a soap. As a result, the researchers

think of reducing the amount of Sodium Hydroxide because of its acidity and reaction

in the skin. Due to lack of time and lack of resources the researchers think of product

that can make soap but is not dangerous to the researchers and respondents. They

think of replacing Sodium Hydroxide into a Soap base (Testing 2).

Testing 2

Testing 1 failed and the researchers tried to change the Sodium Hydroxide into

a Soap Base and tried to add Glycerin to see what will happen and if it can possibly

make the soap exactly what is expected. As a result, Soap Base and Glycerin formed

the soap. The researchers conducted two different trials with two different procedures.

The first procedure hardens the soap with time duration of 30 minutes. In this

procedure, the researchers boiled the Betel and Guava Leaf, while the second

procedure hardens the soap with time duration of 25 minutes. In this procedure, the

researchers used mortar and pestle to extract the extract from the leaves and used

syringe to get rid of the residue. To make the product more like soap, they used

Menthol Base to produce refreshing and enchanting smell and feel for the skin.

Testing 3

The researchers take 250 grams of soap base and cut it into cubes. Betel and

Guava Leaves are extracted using mortar and pestle. The researchers used syringe to
get the extract to get rid of the residue. The soap base is melted using double boiler

method. Add 1 tsp. of Glycerin and ¼ tsp. of menthol in the melted soap base. Put ½

tsp. of the extracts in the mixtures. Mix continuously and after 35 minutes put it in

silicon mold. After 25 minutes, the soap hardens and ready to use.
