SIX STAGES OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT

Dillema:
Jill goes shopping one day with her best
friend, Sujatha. Sujatha tries on a jumper
and walks out of the shop wearing it
under her jacket. Jill is left to face the
store's security person who insists that
Jill names Sujatha and gives Sujatha's
address. The manager of the store tells
Jill she will be in serious trouble if she
does not disclose Sujatha's name and
address. What should Jill do?
Commentary:
What shoud Jill
do?
Pre-conventional
Stage 1: Obedience and Punishment

From Stage 1: Obedience and Punishment. Jill will


disclose Sujatha's Name and address even though
Sujatha and Jill are best friend. The action of Jill
shows rightness in fear of punishment. Jill thinks
that she must obey to avoid the pain of a
punishment.
Pre-conventional
Stage 2: Individualistic

From Stage 2: Individualistic, Jill will disclose the


name and address of Sujatha not because it is the
right thing to do but because it is more for herself .
With Jill's good action it come from the benefits of
not being punished and not being connected to
Sujatha's problem. Thus, Jill's action is clearly for
herself only.
Conventional
Stage 4: Maintaining Law and Order

From Stage 4: Maintaining Law and Order, Jill will


disclose the name and address of Sujatha because
Jill knows that it is the right thing to do and
Sujatha's action is considered as Shoplifting which
is against the law. Thus, Jill's action is about
maintaining and obeying the law to upkeep social
order.
