Julius Cesar Notes

-In 82 B.C. Caesar was a twenty year old Patrican who escaped death by from Sulla’s
soldiers through bribery.
-Governing a province in ancient Rome such as Spain, Sicily, Gaul, Asia Minor,
Macedon, or Africa was a way to quickly game wealth.
-For twenty whole years, Caesar worked as a politician, he was renowned for dazzling
crowds with his brilliant speeches, and his outlandish parties for politicians.
-To support his endeavors Caesar borrowed from Crassus the Rich, who gambled on his
political career.
-This move paid of for Crassus when Caesar got appointed governor of a province in
Spain.
-Caesar collected enough to make himself, his soldiers, and Crassus richer.
-The First Triumvirate – Caesar and Crassus team up with another politician, Pompey
who married Caesar’s daughter Julia thus forming the first triumvirate of Caesar,
Pompey, and Crassus.
-In 59 B.C. Caesar was elected consul and for the next ten years the men used their great
influence to rule Rome and bully senators into following their decisions.
-After his rule as consul Caesar he assigns himself to governorship of Gaul.
-For the next eight years as Gaul’s governor he further conquered the land for the
Romans.
-During this time Caesar sent back dispatches into Rome speaking of his victory these
were collected into what is now knows as Caesar’s commentary on the Gallic Wars.
-Caesar even crossed the English channel and battled the barbaric tribe of Britannia.
-A day as one of Caesar’s soldiers was tough. They were expected to march for sixty
miles a day and dig a trench to conceal the camp from the enemies.
-Dinner usually consisted of a meager cup of sour wine and grain.
-These victories stirred the common people of Rome.
-On the contrary these victories frightened the Roman senators were alarmed and feared
for their own power.
-As 50 B.C. dawned the triumvirate fell apart, Crassus was killed and Pompey ordered
the senate to force Caesar to disband his troops.
-Caesar started a civil war on January 10, 49 B.C. by crossing the Rubicon river the
natural boundary of his territory and swiftly moved to occupy Rome.
- 48 B.C. Caesar delivered the final blow to Pomepy in Pharsalus Greece forcing him to
flee to Egypt where he was killed by the pharaoh.
-Caesar returned to Rome in 46 B.C. and in 44 B.C., he was appointed by the senate
dictator for ten years
-Caesar did many things for Rome he expanded the Senate to nine-hundred men and
added followers.
-He ordered landowners to substitute some free men for slaves.
-Caesar set up a new calendar system very similar to the one he used today.
-On March 15, 44 B.C. The senate along with Cassius and Brutus murdered him at the
Theater of Pompey.
-The Second Triumvirate of his Grandnephew Octavian, Mark Antony, and Lepidus
compteted for power which ended up in the institution of the Roman Empire and Mark
Antony being killed and Egypt being annexed.
