Biochemistry –Biosignaling

Ion Channels
Can be used for regulating ion flow into or out of a cell
Biochemistry –Biosignaling
Types of Ion Channels
Ungated Channels
Voltage-gated Channels
Ligand-gated Channels
Biochemistry –Biosignaling
Enzyme-Linked Receptors
Participate in cell signaling through extracellular ligand
binding and initiation of second messenger cascades
Biochemistry –Biosignaling
G-protein-coupled receptors
Have a membrane bound protein associated with the
trimeric G protein. They also initiate second messenger
systems

What is the process of GPCRs?
Inactive αGDP bound to β and γ turns into active αGTP
bound to β and γ. αGTP dissociates β and γ and an
inorganic phosphate leaves. The αGDP rebinds to β and γ
and becomes inactive.
