MONOLOGUES
Improvising Your
Monologue Exercise
1. You have read the monologue several times and have an understanding of
the character. Now place the text aside and improvise the monologue out
loud conveying in your own words as much of the content as you remember.
Do not try to act the monologue. Just deliver the main message of the
monologue. This exercise is not a memory test.
2. Reflective Inquiry: How did you do? Did you remember the content? Did
you leave out any sections? Write this down.
3. Read the text again silently.
4. Put the text aside and improvise the monologue a second time. Pay
attention to any sections which were not said in the first improvisation.
