The gradual model of release strategy is used in this UOW to slowly shift the

learning from the teacher towards the students. The beginning of the unit emphasises teacher-

driven activities where the learning in teacher-centred. This provides students with an active

model in which they will be able to shape their future learning (Marco, 2018). Students learn

more efficiently when they are able to experience detail and explicit models of work (Marco,

2018). However, this strategy also suggests that throughout the learning, students should take

over the role of being the driver of deep and meaningful learning (Lin & Cheng, 2010). This

is effective as students build their learning from the teacher’s model and expand their own

knowledge (Marco, 2018). This is particular useful for research and literacy tasks as students

follow the same structure of learning that was model by the teacher (Lin & Cheng, 2010).

The UOW of uses this strategy as there is a clear shift from teacher-centred to student centred

learning. This approach was used to direct students learning as they become more aware of

historical context and understanding (NESA, 2016) which is a key aspect of the history

syllabus.
