    American photographer Edward Steichen was born in Luxembourg in 1879 and became a naturalized US citizen. He was a pioneering photographer and helped establish photography as a fine art form through his work with galleries like the Photo-Secession and Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession run by Alfred Stieglitz. During World War I and II, Steichen worked on documentary and naval photography projects, winning an Academy Award for his work on the documentary The Fighting Lady. Later in his career, he was the director of the Museum of Modern Art in New York from WWII until 1962 and curated the famous photography exhibit The Family of Man.
