What is Organizational Behavior?

Organizational behavior (OB) is an applied behavioral science that emerged from the

disciplines of psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science, and economics. OB is the

study of individual and group dynamics within an organizational setting. The disciplines of OB

attempts to understand the interactions of people, working together, so managers can predict

behavioral responses, and manage the resulting outcomes. (Organizational behavior, theory, and

Fundamental Components of Organizational Behavior

There are four main components of organizational behavioral: people, structure,

technology, and environment.

People are one of the important parts of an organizational design. People make up the

internal social system of the organization. People can be defined as individuals, and groups, both

small and large, managers, supervisors, and clerks.

Structure describes the roles and relationships of people within an organization. People

are given different roles and they form different relationships with other people. This structure

leads to division of work so people can perform their duties to satisfy organizational goals.

Technology provides the resources that enable people to work and complete tasks that

they perform. In today’s world little can be accomplished using just your hands, so technology is

used to build buildings, design machines, create work processes, and assemble resources. The

use of technology also has a significant influence on working relationships, allowing them the

capability to do more and work better. The downside to technology use is that it poses

restrictions on work when it does not function properly, additionally, it comes with costs as well

as benefits.
