CASE PROBLEM 9.

4
STATION WRCH IN RICHMOND
Station WRCH in Richmond, Virginia, is interviewing candidates for the job of news anchor on its 6:00 P.M.
Eyewitness News show. There are three final candidates for the job- June Pawlie, Kellie Cooric, and Tim
Brokenaw. The criteria the station manager will use to make the selection are camera appearance,
intelligence, and speaking ability (or speech). The manager’s pairwise comparisons for the job for each of
these candidates and for the three criteria are as follows:

Anchor Pawlie Cooric Brokenaw Row Average

Pawlie 0.6087 0.6250 0.5385 0.5907

Table 1. Normalized matrix with row average for the appearance criterion

The row averages in table 1 provide us with Station RWCH’s preferences for the three
candidates for the appearance criterion. The most preferred candidate is Pawlie, followed by
Cooric, then the least preferred candidate, Brokenaw.

STEP 2: Ranking the criteria

Criterion Appearance Intelligence Speech Row Average

Appearance 0.6857 0.5714 0.7143 0.6571
Intelligence 0.0857 0.0714 0.0476 0.0683

Table 5. Normalized matrix for criteria with row averages

Based on the row averages of the normalized matrix above, it shows that the appearance
is the highest-priority criterion of Station WRCH in accepting a news anchor. Speaking ability
ranked second, while intelligence appear to be relatively unimportant in terms of the overall
objective in determining the best candidate to accept for the position as it ranked last.

STEP 3: Developing an overall ranking

eH w
o.
An overall score for each candidate is computed by multiplying the values in the criteria

rs e
preference vector by the preceding criteria matrix and summing the products as shown below:
ou urc
Pawlie = 0.6571(0.5907)+0.0683(0.1226)+0.2746(0.2222) = 0.4576
Cooric = 0.6571(0.3338)+0.0683(0.3202)+0.2746(0.6667) = 0.4243
o

Brokenaw = 0.6571(0.0755)+0.0683(0.5571)+0.2746(0.1111) = 0.1181

AHP CONSITENCY

Criterion Appearance Intelligence Speech Criteria

Appearance 1 8 3 x 0.6571 = 2.0270 / 0.6571 = 3.0847
Intelligence 1/8 1 1/5 x 0.0683 = 0.2053 / 0.0683 = 3.0061
Speech 1/3 5 1 x 0.2746 = 0.8349 / 0.2746 = 3.0405
9.1314 /3 = 3.0438

Consitency Index = 3.0438 - 3 = 0.0219

2

Since the consistency index is not equal to 0, Station WRCH is not perfectly consistent.

m
Therefore, we should determine the acceptable level of inconsistency by comparing consistency

er as
index and random index as shown below:

co
eH w
CI = 0.0219 = 0.0377

o.
RI 0.58

rs e
ou urc
The computation above indicates that WRCH’s degree of consistency is satisfactory
because their result of CI/RI is less than 0.10, otherwise, it means that there are inconsistencies.
