Background of the study

The massive growth of the infected people by the disease occurred in the late 2019 to 2020 has not yet decreased or solved.
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus. This new virus and disease
were unknown before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.On January 2020, the Philippine Department of
Health reported the first case of COVID-19 in the country which later on caused an outbreak of the disease that cause different
casualties to many citizens. With the disease going on, people had rules and restrictions to follow, due to that people are not
allowed to freely go outside and do the things they want to do.

The government has its different protocols for the movement of persons under community quarantine. With the elderly and
youth told to stay at home because of the protocols, most of the students had now merge the “new normal “.

Online has become one of the essential platforms. It has become an inevitable one when it comes to communication and
connection to all the essential activities like school, business and services. Everything has transformed online and virtually to
make sure that everyone is following the given protocols. The apps get more convenient for students who are now currently
starting their own classes as it’s handy or portable and can be accessed from anywhere and anytime provided with the internet
connection. Social media and virtual meetings, all around the world, have become the “new normal” as people undertake
normalcy in their lives amidst pandemic restrictions.

The world is now in the stage of a new ever-changing life, and in today’s technology world, the fast and simple acquiring of
goods and services is greatly desired. Online shopping is the way through which consumer can purchase goods or services
directly by sitting at home by using a single gadget or smart phone with connection to internet. Now either at office, home or
anywhere consumer can buy their essentials at different with online business sites. Despite its overwhelming blow on physical
businesses, online business has provided many positive advantages for its costumers. Online stores are open 24 hours a day and 7
days a week, so the possibilities of not making in time before the closing of store is completely eliminated. Online shopping is
exceptionally efficient to students and to other people during todays situation where strict restrictions and protocols are being
followed because of COVID 19; shoppers do not have to bother with the long, exhausting lines, and they get to purchase and
shop their needs and wants by staying indoors. Due to the lack of operating costs, online retailers can sell at lower prices; this
makes the experience of online shopping not only faster and convenient, but it is also far cheaper than going to the physical store.
Because of its efficiency and affordability, many students grab or seize the chance to buy at various online business. Especially,
the students nowadays seek more new variety of products at lesser prices. Lifestyle of the students have became more
technological oriented and fashionable. Here in the Philippines, It was revealed that 64% of Filipino internet users are spending
more time on social media, with 23% indicating an increased activity in their online shopping activity by the Digital 2020 April
Statshot report by Hootsuite and We Are Social .

Although these facts may make online business look like the best course of action, there are many downsides in
purchasing in an online business. Online shopping is mostly not quite suitable for clothes because the customers has to buy a
product without actually seeing how it looks like and most likely cannot try them on. The electronic images of a product are
sometimes misleading. The color, texture and appearance of the product may not match with the electronic images. It lacks of
touch-feel-try that creates concerns over the quality of the product. If someone, specially students are shopping online, there's a
larger risk of fraud, hacking, theft, and other more scams for some of the online businesses are unreliable. Privacy and security
are legitimate concerns for any online shopper. the online payments are not much secured. Information could get stolen from the
site or use it in other things or network. It's also hard for a student to immediately recognize whether an online store is legit or
just a scam because of the little knowledge and experience that certain a student has. Those are just some of the disadvantages of
online shopping and it will not hinder its growth. The objective of this study is to identify the risk of online businesses to students
amidst COVID 19 pandemic.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to inquire the risks of online selling to SHS ABM amid pandemic.

More specifically, it sought to answer your the following questions;

1. What activities online are being engaged by students?

2. What are those risks that might harm students online?

3. What is/are the significance of determining those risks that might harm students while engaging to online activities?

Scope and Limitation


This qualitative study aims to determine the risks of online businesses to senior high school ABM amid pandemic. The
researchers will conduct an online and one to one interview with every 3 grade 12 students in ABM strand regarding those risks
of online businesses amid pandemic in the school year of 2020-2021.

Hypothesis

Null: There are significant risks of Online Businesses to students amidst Pandemic Covid-19

Alternative: There is no significant risk of Online Businesses to students amidst Pandemic Covid-19

Importance of the Study

This study will be undertaken to find out the risk of online businesses to student amidst Covid-19

The vital result of this study could be highly significant and beneficial specifically to the following:

Student, the students will be aware of the adverse side effects of buying / selling online or in other social media networks and
they will be able to assess themselves on what are the right thing to do to deal with it.

Teacher, the teacher will benefit from this study from the finding and it’s recommendations.

Consumers, this study will acknowledge the consumers about the possible risk they might encounter, they will be able to avoid
the risk by this Study.

Researchers, this study will provide baseline data needed for future researches and Study related to this one.

Definition of Terms

Online businesses-This refers to the business online that might harm students when they are engaged to it.

COVID-19- This is an infectious virus that might be passed through direct contact.

Consumers- ABM Students of Antipolo National High School

Risks- This refers to the negative effects of online businesses to students.
