1 MAGNETOTHERAPY
M a g n e t o t h e r a p y i s o n e o f t h e b a s i c p h ys i o t h e r a p y p r o c e d u r e s . I t s b a s i c f o r m - a p p l i c a t i o n o f
static magnetic field. i.e. the permanent magnet - has been used since time immemorial as
o n e o f n a t u r a l h e a l i n g s o u r c e s . H o we v e r , o n l y t h e c o m i n g o f e l e c t r o n i c s a n d p o we r f u l
s wi t c h i n g e l e m e n t s e n a b l e d r a p i d d e v e l o p m e n t o f l o w- f r e q u e n c y p u l s e m a g n e t t h e r a p y, t h e
e f f e c t s o f wh i c h a r e s e v e r a l t i m e s h i g h e r t h a n t h o s e o f t h e s t a t i c m a g n e t i c f i e l d . T h e r e c e n t l y
performed studies imply that therapy performed by means of pulse electromagnetic field is up
t o 1 0 0 t i m e s m o r e e f f e c t i v e t h a n t h e a p p l i c a t i o n o f s t a t i o n a r y m a g n e t i c f i e l d . T h a t i s wh y t h e
p u l s e m a g n e t o t h e r a p y i s n o wa d a y s b e c o m i n g o n e o f wi d e s p r e a d p h y s i o t h e r a p y m e t h o d s . A t
some conditions (e.g. chronic pains in degenerative articular diseases) this method has
p r o v e n s u c c e s s f u l a s t h e r a p y wi t h l o n g - l a s t i n g t h e r a p e u t i c e f f e c t e v e n wh e n o t h e r t h e r a p y
methods failed.
Pulse magnetotherapy can be very effective in case of correct indication and application. It
c a n a l s o b e r e c o m m e n d e d f o r u s e i n c o m b i n a t i o n wi t h o t h e r t h e r a p y m e t h o d s , s u c h a s
p h a r m a c o t h e r a p y , t h e e f f e c t s o f wh i c h a r e u s u a l l y s u p p o r t e d b y m a g n e t o t h e r a p y. T h a t i s wh y
magnetotherapy should neither be left out in case of comprehensive approach to treatment,
nor given preference as monotherapy.
The latest findings about physiological response of the organism to the electromagnetic field
i m p l y t h e f o l l o wi n g e f f e c t s o f m a g n e t o t h e r a p y:
• analgesic effect,
• antiedematous effect,
• antiphlogistic effect,
• t r o p h i c e f f e c t ( a c c e l e r a t i o n o f h e a l i n g a n d g r o wt h ) ,
• myorelaxation and spasmolytic effect,
• vasodilatation effect.

T h e E n c y c l o p a e d i a , wh i c h i s a s e p a r a t e a t t a c h m e n t o f t h i s U s e r ’ s G u i d e , c o n t a i n s t h e l i s t o f
recommended parameters of magnetotherapy at selected diagnoses.
The designing of this device utilizes the experience acquired during the development,
manufacturing and long-standing clinical operation of the BTL-09 device and state-of-the-art
devices of the BTL-4000 and BTL-5000 series.
D u r i n g t h e d e s i g n i n g o f n e w m a g n e t i c a p p l i c a t o r s f o r t h i s d e v i c e t h e r e wa s d e v e l o p e d a b r a n d
n e w t e c h n o l o g y - s o c a l l e d “ F M F “ ( “ F o c u s e d M a g n e t i c F i e l d ” ) t e c h n o l o g y. T h u s we m a n a g e d
to increase the electromagnetic field intensity on the patient side and significantly reduce the
e l e c t r o m a g n e t i c f i e l d i n t e n s i t y o n t h e a p p l i c a t o r s i d e , t u r n e d a wa y f r o m t h e p a t i e n t .
C o l l o q u i a l l y s a i d , t h e m a g n e t i c f i e l d wa s m o v e d f r o m t h e i m p r o p e r s i d e t o t h e s i d e wh e r e i t i s
desired.
Thanks to these construction elements and thanks to state-of-the-art sources based on the
p r i n c i p l e o f e l e c t r o n i c s wi t c h i n g e l e m e n t s we h a v e m a n a g e d t o r e d u c e t h e p o we r c o n s u m p t i o n
s i g n i f i c a n t l y wh i l e p r e s e r v i n g t h e s a m e e l e c t r o m a g n e t i c f i e l d i n t e n s i t i e s .

f l o wi n g t h r o u g h t h e m . T h e f o r c e e f f e c t s a r e n o t v e r y i m p o r t a n t f o r o u r t h e o r y, b e c a u s e
b i o l o g i c a l o b j e c t s a r e d i a m a g n e t i c . H o we v e r , i t i s n e c e s s a r y t o t a k e t h e s e f o r c e e f f e c t s i n t o
a c c o u n t i n c a s e o f m e t a l i m p l a n t s , e s p e c i a l l y t h o s e wh i c h a r e f i x e d i n s o f t t i s s u e s a n d a r e n o t
made of antimagnetic materials.
A n o t h e r i n t e r a c t i o n b e t we e n t h e m a g n e t i c f i e l d a n d t h e m a t t e r o c c u r s a t t h e m o m e n t wh e n t h e
matter is exposed to the magnetic field. At that moment, individual free molecules are
o r i e n t a t e d i n a wa y t o m i n i m i z e t h e e n e r g y i n s i d e t h e f i e l d . I n c a s e o f b i o l o g i c a l o b j e c t s , t h e s e
f o r c e s a c t a g a i n s t t h e b o n d s b e t we e n a t o m s , m o l e c u l e s a n d i o n s i n t h e t i s s u e s , wh i c h
consequently influences also the cellular processes.
The effects important for physiotherapy are based on electrodynamic induction discovered

c o n d u c t o r i n t h e m a g n e t i c f i e l d , v o l t a g e a p p e a r s o n i t . I f yo u m a k e a c l o s e d l o o p o f t h e m o v i n g
c o n d u c t o r , e l e c t r i c c u r r e n t wi l l f l o w t h r o u g h i t . A s F a r a d a y d i s c o v e r e d , t h i s p h e n o m e n o n a l s o
wo r k s t h e o t h e r wa y a r o u n d – i f t h e m a g n e t i c f i e l d m o v e s o r c h a n g e s i n t h e c o u r s e o f t i m e
( i n s t e a d o f t h e c o n d u c t o r ) , a s i m i l a r e f f e c t o c c u r s . T h e s e d i s c o v e r i e s we r e o n l y a s h o r t r e m o v e
from the application of alternating magnetic fields in therapy.
In case of living organisms, the moving charges (the conductor moving in the magnetic field)
a r e r e p r e s e n t e d b y t h e c i r c u l a t i n g b o d y f l u i d s ( b l o o d , l ym p h ) . I n c a s e o f e x p o s i t i o n t o
alternating magnetic field it refers to its individual more electrically conductive parts - the
vascular bed (including circulating fluids), peripheral nerves, CNS neural paths and, last but
not least, also individual ions and charges on cellular membranes.

states.

basic pulses can be created:
• trapezoid surges,
• sine surges,
• s ym m e t r i c s u r g e s .
In dependence on their spatial distribution, magnetic fields are divided into uniform and non-
uniform. The uniform field has the same intensity and the same direction in all points of the
space.

Therefore the magnetic field of the BTL applicator is intentionally non-uniform and focused.

It has been proved that for treatment of patients in acute stages it is better to use static
magnetic field at the beginning; in chronic diseases it is better to use pulse magnetotherapy.

e f f e c t s h a v e b e e n s p e c i f i e d i n r e c e n t ye a r s . A c c o r d i n g t o t h e s e f i n d i n g s , t h e a n a l g e s i c e f f e c t
of magnetotherapy is accounted for by increased secretion of endogenous opioids caused by
m yo r e l a x a t i o n , a n t i p h l o g i s t i c a n d a n t i e d e m a t o u s e f f e c t a n d m a yb e a l s o t h e i m p a c t o n
presinaptic inhibition of nociceptive signals at the level of medullary dorsal horns.
T h e t r e a t m e n t s h o u l d b e c o m b i n e d wi t h a i m e d p h a r m a c o t h e r a p y, m a n u a l t r e a t m e n t a n d
relaxation therapy, at least in the initial stage.
This effect has not been convincingly explained so far, but recent studies agree on the
f o l l o wi n g p r i n c i p l e :
The antiphlogistic effect is induced by increased phagocytosis of neutrophils and increased
p r o d u c t i o n o f h y p e r o x i d e . T h i s i s f o l l o we d b y i n d u c t i o n o f h y p e r o x i d e d i s m u t a s e b o u n d t o
e n d o t h e l i u m , wh i c h a l l p r o b a b l y l e a d s t o h i g h e r c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f h y d r o g e n p e r o x i d e i n t h e
e x p o s e d a r e a . O wi n g t o t h e f a s t t h a t h y p e r o x i d e i n h i b i t s t h e a c t i v i t y o f c a t a l a s e , t h e h yd r o g e n
p e r o x i d e i s n o t d e g r a d e d a n d t h u s i t i s a b l e t o d e s t r o y l e u c o t r i e n s , wh i c h b e l o n g t o t h e
strongest activators of phagocytosis.
T h i s m e c h a n i s m a l s o e x p l a i n s t h e i n i t i a l c o n t r o v e r s i a l a c t i n g o f t h e m a g n e t i c f i e l d i n s t e r i le
i n f l a m m a t i o n s a s we l l a s i n t h e m i c r o b i a l l y i n d u c e d i n f l a m m a t i o n s . T h i s e f f e c t a l s o a c c o u n t s
f o r t e m p o r a r y i m p a i r m e n t o f r h e u m a t i c c o n d i t i o n s d u r i n g t h e f i r s t t wo o r t h r e e e x p o s i t i o n s ,

The magnetic field accelerates healing of the skeleton and soft tissues. It is caused by better

• For sterile inflammations it is suitable to use frequency up to 10 Hz.
• For microbially induced inflammations (sinusitises, osteomyelitises) it is suitable to use
pulse frequency about 25 Hz.
• In degenerative diseases of locomotive organs the recommended pulse frequency is
above 10 Hz.

• When treating subacute and acute vertebrogenous troubles it is also recommended to

• The total daily time of exposition should not exceed 40 minutes.
