PROBLEM SET # 2 IN ES 32 – STATICS OF RIGID BODIES

Place in short size bond paper with 1 inch border on all sides. Provide title page with border.

1. Determine the magnitude of the horizontal force P that must be applied to the handle of the bench
vise in order to produce a clamping force of 600 N on the
block. The single square-threaded screw has a mean
diameter of 25 mm and a lead of 7.5 mm. The coefficient of
static friction is µs = 0.25.

2. If θ = 15,
determine the minimum
coefficient of static
friction between the collars A and B and the rod required for
the system to remain in equilibrium, regardless of the weight of
cylinder D. Links AC and BC have negligible weight and are
connected together at C by a pin.

3. If a force of P = 200 N
is applied to the handle of the bell crank, determine the
maximum torque M that can be resisted so that the flywheel is
not on the verge of rotating clockwise. The coefficient of static
friction between the brake band and the rim of the wheel is μs =
0.3.

4. A 1.75-lb uniform steel rod is bent into a circular arc of radius 20

in. as shown. The rod is supported by pin at A and the cord BC.
Determine (a) the tension in the cord, (b) the reaction at A.

5. Locate the centroid

of the plane area shown.

6. Determine by direct integration the centroid of the area

shown. Express your answer in terms of a and b.
7. The aluminum
shade of a small high-
intensity lamp has a
uniform thickness of 1
mm. Knowing that the
density of aluminum is
2800 kg/m3, determine
the mass of the shade.

8. Determine the volume and surface area of the chain link

shown knowing that it is made from a 0.5-in.-diameter bar
and that R = 0.75 in. and L = 3 in.

9. Determine the y coordinate of the centroid of the body

shown.

10. Locate the

centroid ( ̅ , ̅, ̅) of the
wire.

11. Cable ABCDE supports three loads as shown.

Knowing that dC = 1.8 m, determine (a) the reaction at E, (b)
the distances dB and dD.

12. Determine the magnitude of the hydrostatic force acting

on gate AB, which has a width of 2 ft. The specific weight
of water is γ = 62.4 lb/ft3.
