Logic Problem:

In 1990, the following ordinance was in effect in Naperville, Illinois: “It shall be unlawful
for any person to keep more than three dogs and three cats upon his property within the
city.” Was Charles Marko, who owned five dogs and no cats, in violation of the ordinance?
Explain.

Let:
p = A person who keeps three or more dogs
q = A person who keeps three or more cats
p^q = A person who keeps more than three dogs and three cats

p q p^q
T T T
T F F
F T F
F F F

In the problem:
p = Charles Marko who owned three or more dogs
q = Charles Marko who owned three or more cats
p^q = A person who keeps more than three dogs and three cats

p is TRUE since Charles Marko owned three or more dogs, while

q is FALSE because Charles Marko do not own a cat.
As a conjunction, it is FALSE since he is not considered as a person who keeps more than three
dogs and three cats

∴ Charles Marko did not violate the law, since he just owned five dogs and no cats. However, if
the ordinance says, “It shall be unlawful for any person to keep more than three dogs upon his
property within the city,” he is in violation.
