What is It

Here are some of the artists and songs of 1950s, 1960s, and before the 1970s.
Pilita Corrales was born on August 22,
1939 in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines.
She has recorded over 100 albums in
the Philippines.
In the early sixties she only recorded
Spanish songs, then in the late sixties
she started to record English and
Filipino (Tagalog and Cebuano) music.
The only Filipina singer who performed
during the July 4, 1966 Philippine

concert of the Beatles at the Rizal
Memorial Football Stadium, Manila.
She sang the popular song “Ang Pipit”.

Diomedes Maturan (1941–2002) was an


actor who played in Botika sa Baryo
(1960) and Tawag ng Tanghalan.
Maturan died on April 7, 2002 of heart
attack at age 61. He rose to fame by
winning the popular singing
competition "Tawag Ng Tanghalan" for
his song "Rose Tattoo".
Ricardo "Ric" Manrique Jr. (23 May

known as one of the two Hari Ng
Kundiman (Kings of Kundiman) in the

Ruben Tagalog (1922-1989) was a
Filipino actor and musician, famous for
his works in the Kundiman style. He
was also a part of the Mabuhay

Lucio San Pedro has composed many


songs and hymns, but he is most
known for and associated with the
lullabye Sa Ugoy ng Duyan. It is said to
be as familiar as the Philippine
National Anthem. Indeed, Sa Ugoy ng
Duyan is the greatest, the most
beautiful and famous Filipino lullabye.
It is immortal.
Carmen Camacho (born 1939 in
Catanduanes, Luzon, Philippines) was
one of the Philippine Kundiman Divas
of the 1960s along with Norma
Ledesma, Norma Balagtas, Pilita
Corrales, and others. Camacho was a
member of the Mabuhay Singers in the
1950s. She recorded her first album in
the early 1960s and recorded most of
her songs with Villar Records.

Antonino Buenaventura was born on
May 4, 1904, and named National
Artist for Music in 1988. One of his
most famous compositions was
“Pandanggo sa Ilaw.” He led the
Philippine Constabulary Band, later the
Philippine Army Band, for 16 years. He
also became the director of the
Conservatory of Music of the University
of Sto. Tomas. In 1964, he organized

died on Jan. 25 1996.
