MODALS-EXPRESSING ATTITUDE

DEFINITION:-Modal auxiliaries are


those which together with the main
verbs express the "mode" or
"manner" of the actions denoted by
the verbs.Example you should go
and see him now.(advice),can i eat
these butter toasts.(permission)

· will:-

1. to express pure future with


second and third
persons(you,he,she,it,they).Ex
ample; you will die of hunger

2. to express
willingness,intention,promise,
determination,with the first
person (I,WE).Example; i will
write to you again.(promise),i
will help you.
(willingness/intention).

3. to express a characteristic
habit,assumption,invitation,re
quest or insistence.Example ;
A dog will usually obey his
master.(characteristic
habit).,He will be there by
now.(assumption)

NOTE:- "will" is never used with the first


person in the interrogative.Example; will
i join you ? (incorrect sentence), shall i
join you (correct sentence).
