Riveted Joints
Introduction
• Short cylindrical bar with a head integral
to it
• Cylindrical portion  shank or body
• Lower portion of shank  tail
• Used to make permanent fastening
between the plates such as in structural
work, ship building, bridges, tanks, boiler
shells, etc.

12/8/2016 Lecture 4: Riveted Joints 7

Riveted Joints

Advantages
1. High Production rate
2. Low initial & maintenance cost
3. Metallic or non metallic materials can be joined
4. Dissimilar metals, parts with non uniform thickness
can be fastened
5. Unskilled labor
6. Variety of materials for rivet

Riveted Joints
Important Terms used
1. Pitch:
• Distance from the centre of
one rivet to the centre of the
next rivet measured parallel
to the seam as shown in Fig.
• It is usually denoted by p

Riveted Joints
Important Terms used
2. Transverse pitch:
• Perpendicular distance
between the centre lines of
the successive rows as
shown in Fig.
• It is usually denoted by pt
or pb.

Riveted Joints
Important Terms used
3. Diagonal pitch:
• Distance between the
centres of the rivets in
adjacent rows of zig-zag
riveted joint as shown in
Fig.
• It is usually denoted by pd

12/8/2016 Lecture 4: Riveted Joints 17

Riveted Joints
Important Terms used
4. Margin or marginal pitch:
• Distance between the centre
of rivet hole to the nearest
edge of the plate as shown
in Fig.
• It is usually denoted by m.

12/8/2016 Lecture 4: Riveted Joints 18

Riveted Joints
Failure of Riveted Joints
1. Plate Failure (edge)
• Tearing of Plate at edge
• Can be avoided by keeping the
margin,
m = 1.5d,
where d is the diameter of the rivet
hole

12/8/2016 Lecture 4: Riveted Joints 19

Riveted Joints
Failure of Riveted Joints
2. Plate Failure (across)
• main plate or cover plates may tear
off across a row of rivets as shown
in fig
• Due to the tensile stresses in the
main plates

12/8/2016 Lecture 4: Riveted Joints 20

Riveted Joints
Failure of Riveted Joints
2. Plate Failure (across)
• Tearing Area per pitch length , At =
(p-d)t
• Tearing Resistance,

• When Pt > P, this type of failure will

not occur

Riveted Joints
Failure of Riveted Joints
4. Crushing of Plates or Rivets
• No Shear in rivet but it is crushed
• Joint loosen & failure occur
• Also known as Bearing Failure

Crushing Area per rivet, Ac = d.t

Total crushing area = n.d.t

Crushing resistance, Pc = n.d.t.σc

When Pc > P, Bearing failure occur
