Riveted Joints
Previous Lecture
• Permanent fastening
• Commonly used in boiler shells, ship building,
bridges, structural joints, roof trusses, etc.
• Advantages
• Types of rivet
• Types of riveted joints
• Important terms used
• Failure of riveted joints

Diameter of Shop Head = 1.5 x Rivet Diameter

Height of Shop Head = 0.5 x Rivet Diameter

Riveted Joints
Strength of Riveted Joints
• Maximum force, which it can transmit, without
causing it to fail
• Joints may fail when least of Pt, Ps, Pc is reached
• For continuous joint, strength is calculated per
pitch length
• For small joints, strength is calculated for whole
length

11/14/2016 Lecture 5: Riveted Joints 13

Riveted Joints
Efficiency of Riveted Joints
• Ratio of least strength of the joint to the solid plate
(un-riveted)
OR
Strength of joint in the weakest point
Strength of un-punched plate

Riveted Joints
Practice
The fig. shows a lap diamond joint. Find possible ways of failure of the joint
and determine the strength and efficiency of the joint.

The allowable stresses are 120 MPa in tension, 80 MPa in shear and 210 MPa
in crushing (bearing). Assume hole diameter is equal to the rivet diameter.

Rivet dia = 21 mm
Plate dim = 230 X 10 mm

Riveted Joints
HW
Alternately, if the rivets are placed such that there are 3 rivets in each
row, what would be the strength and efficiency of the joint.
