As part of the workshop on Formal Methods in Philosophy, we look

at applications of logical and mathematics in semantics and metaphysics.
After giving a short survey of such applications and their merits, we focus
on two exemplary cases in more detail: formal theories of truth on the one
hand, and formal theories of similarity (or resemblance) on the other. In
both cases, the logical-mathematical treatment of philosophical questions
has led to genuine philosophical progress. In passing, we will also discuss
some very recent developments in these areas, in particular, a probabilistic
account of semantic paradoxes and an impossibility theorem on meaning
resemblance.
