Assignment 4 EM Theory Minor

Q1) The spherical dome of a Van de Graaff generator has a radius of Rm. A rubberized belt of 50cm
wide travels at a velocity of 30m/sec. The belt is given a surface charge density which produces a field
of approximately 106 V/m on each side of the belt.
(a) What is the current carried by the belt
(b) What is the maximum charge that the spherical some can hold and how long will it take to reach
this value.
(c ) What is the maximum electrostatic potential of spherical dome?
(d) What are your answers under (b) and (c) for R=0.15 and R=0.5m?

Q2) The xerographic copying machine is an important application of electrostatics. The surface of the
photoconductor is initially charged uniformly When light from the document to be copied is focused on
the photoconductor, the charges on the lower surface combine with those on the upper surface to
neutralize each other. The image is developed by pouring a charged black powder over the surface of
the photoconductor. The electric field attracts the charged powder, which is later transferred to paper
and melted to form a permanent image. Determine the electric field below and above the surface of the
photoconductor.

Q3) For a point charged placed at a distance h from a conducting plane. Calculate the electric filed at a
point P(x,y,z) and prove that the induced charge in image configuration is –Q.

Q4) A coaxial cable contains an insulating material of conductivity . If the radius of the central wire
is a and that of the sheath is b. Calculate the conductance of the cable per unit length. The steps which
can be followed for this calculation is
