• A group of words which makes sense and is meaningful is called a sentence.
• All sentences begin with a capital letter and end with a punctuation
mark.(full stop, question mark, exclamation mark)
• Eg. I live in Coimbatore.
There are four kinds of sentences.

I. Identify the sentences as assertive, imperative, interrogative or !
exclamatory. Write the answer in the space provided.

II. Rearrange the jumbled words into meaningful sentences as per the
instructions given in the brackets, with appropriate punctuation marks :

Assertive sentences are of two types:
❖ Affirmative - I will go to school tomorrow.
❖ Negative - I will not play with you today.
Affirmative sentences can be changed to negative sentences and negative sentences
can be changed to affirmative sentences. For eg.
You must remember to visit him today. ( affirmative)
You must not forget to visit him today. ( negative)

No, not and never are used in a negative sentence

III. Do as directed:
1. This problem is difficult to solve. (Change into negative)
2. She never woke up early.(Change into affirmative)
3. How politely he behaves!(Change into an assertive sentence)
4. We cannot imagine a day without water. (Change into an interrogative sentence)
5. What a lovely voice she has! (Change into an assertive sentence)
IV. Choose the correct exclamatory sentence for the given assertive sentences:
