EXPLORING A PODCAST 2

Exploring a Podcast
The Podcast that I decided to explore is called The Porch. The Porch’s targeted audience

is for “young adults that are in their 20’s and 30’s that are living out their purpose instead of

living for the weekend” (Watermark Community Church, para. 1). This Podcast is lifestyle based

for those that are seeking a faith journey with their first topic that launched being Science and

Christianity to the most current Make America Godly Again. It also offers topics such as how to

ask someone out to living a faithful life.

The Porch has been around since August 5, 2014 and it frequently hits the airwaves every

Monday. The Porch is intended to be recorded in front of a live audience that attends the church

with young adults. The hosts are David Marvin and JD Rodgers. David attended Texas A&M

that is now focused on helping young adults thrive to be their best version of themselves. How

David views his work is by stating, “Throughout history, one age group has consistently had

incredible influence on the culture and world around it: young adults” (Watermark Community

Church, para. 3). David is the Young Adults Director at Watermark Community Church. JD is

also a reoccurring host, but better known as the Young Adults Creative Director who joined the

organization in February 2019. JD has a background in communications from Stephen F. Austin

University. His perseverance in being a part of the Podcast is noted as him saying, “ I believe

people often come into the church with a lot of walls built up that prohibit them from receiving

the truth of the gospel in their lives” (Watermark Community Church, para. 2). He along with

David host The Porch to make positive impacts and perspectives in their role at The Porch.

The average run time for the shows are 35-50 minutes. The show progresses through

series, for example, what they are currently discussing is called Divided States of America. The

current topic is informative and trending with the current political climate. The audience is not

communicative, but they do have special guests at times that are well educated on the topic that

share their opinion. The Porch is affiliated with the Watermark Church which is a non-profit

organization. They receive their funding by people donating online, during weekend services,

donations of stock or assets or can give to specific funds such as International Discipleship

efforts. In the portion of giving at the church they state that, “ Every single dollar stewarded at

Watermark is part of the “mission budget”, strategically deployed to advance God’s mission here

and around the world” (Watermark Community Church, para.1).

In reviewing the outlook of what is ahead for The Porch, this Podcast has become

successful over the years from launching in 2014. I see this continuing to thrive, as they now

have launched campuses at different churches that satellite from The Porch, so others can listen

to the message live. With the Podcast, it is shorter message that highlights key points of what the

topics that young adults can identify with.
