Chord Tone Exercises

Fundamentals Of Improvisation

Exercise 1
Play the chord tones 1,3,5,7 of each chord. Play each note on each beat, starting on the 1st.

Exercise 2
Play up the chord tones 1,3,5,7 of the first chord, then play the nearest chord tone of the next
chord and continue in the opposite direction. Repeat this process, make sure to constantly mix it
up. You can also start the exercise on the 3rd, 5th or 7th to make sure it’s different every time.

Play the chord tones 3,5,7,9 of each chord. Play each note on each beat, starting on the 3rd.

Exercise 4
Play up the chord tones 3,5,7,9 of the first chord, then play the nearest chord tone of the next
chord and continue in the opposite direction. Repeat this process, make sure to constantly mix it
up. You can also add in the root note once you’re comfortable with the 3, 5, 7 and 9.
