February whispers to us about the end of our winter and summons the hope for an early spring. Trey Pennington

We’ve had enough of the cold and dark by the start of this short month. It will pass quickly...

This issue brings with it a few changes and a few important points to consider – so keep an eye out Kathryn Hardaway

Resolve to
Empower Your
Organization!
The Fête marketing model enables all the participants
in Fête the opportunity to join forces in a way that
does not exist anywhere else...

Imagine
being able to work with everyone else in Fête to promote your organization! Fête is sharing, Fête is reach
and the Fête Marquee is growing faster than any other publication in Greenville.

If you are a non-profit

in search of growing attendance to an event – enlist your event sponsors to pass along to their employees
and customers the social media links, graphics and information related to “their” event. Advertise your event
in Fête and you will have an entire page (with embedded links and/or video) that can be eblasted or posted
by you and your sponsors/supporters/patrons throughout their social media networks and websites. Add up
the numbers and you will see the incredible marketing potential of Fête. No other publication has this ability!

This same strategy holds true

for small businesses.
Reach potential customers with the linked materials Fête affords you and you will have an entirely
new networking schematic that reaches the most coveted group imaginable – the group that supports
downtown Greenville.

You’ve heard of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn—all great ways to connect with people around the world and right
here at home. They’re all totally worthless, though, if you’re out-and-about and you can’t get on the Internet.
Several years ago an enterprising soul sought to remedy that problem by setting up free WIFI access throughout
downtown. For whatever reason, that access very rarely works.

Now another enterprising soul, entrepreneur Neil Lopez, is making ultra high-speed Internet access available along
Main Street. His company, Nuvella Communications, installed a massive connection to the Internet and is sharing it
with visitors downtown. The service is fast and free. Right now it’s available from the former Daniel Building to just
past City Hall. Soon they’ll be adding a more access to cover all of Falls Park and Riverplace
through the West End.

To access the connection, visit downtown Greenville along Main Street, simply tell your
computer to display available Internet connections, look for GreaterGreenville, select it,
and enjoy super-fast Internet speed.

If you want to keep up with progress, check out Neil’s company website
http://www.nuvellacommunications.com or follow Nuvella on Twitter Nuvella.
The web portal supporting the GreaterGreenville WIFI will be
MyGreaterGreenvilleSC.com.

Feel The Love, Stacy Hammac

Locally!
By Stacy Hammac

You can’t welcome in the month of February without

acknowledging Valentine’s Day. For young couples
in love, it usually means a nice dinner, flowers,
wine and a lovey-dovey night out. For older
couples, it’s more of a card, a peck on the cheek
and an “I still love you” moment. And for the rest
of us out there, it’s commonly referred to as
“Singles Awareness Day.”

I don’t consider myself to be a bitter, single girl,

but it is pretty hard not to feel alone around this
time of year. It’s also pretty hard not to acknowledge
how blatantly commercial the holiday is. Cards.
Chocolates. Jewelry. Wine. Dinner. Flowers. It all
adds up. Nobody seems to question the price of a
dozen roses around Valentine’s Day. Sure, people
complain, but they still fork out the cash. And
maybe that’s because not many guys could tell you

locally owned Downtown Greenville retailers:
If you do choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and I
sincerely hope you do, take a minute to think about
where your money is going. There are plenty of
locally-owned florists, restaurants, jewelers and
wine shops right here in Downtown Greenville. And
they would all certainly appreciate your business. As
for us single folks, there are plenty of bars in
Downtown Greenville that will appreciate our
business, too.

The Greenville Forward Momentum Series takes place during the lunch hour on the third Thursday of each
month and involves intimate community conversations. The topics range from social services to youth
engagement. By creating conversation and collaborations, these monthly programs create Momentum with
Vision 2025.

February’s Momentum Series will discuss “Innovating Greenville.” Recently, entrepreneurship has become an
emphasis of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce through the formation of the NEXT Innovation Center and
was mentioned as one of they key emphases of President Obama’s 2011 State of the Union Address. We will
discuss how we can better cultivate our entrepreneurs in Greenville and how we can use innovative companies
to impact our economic development. If you want to learn more or to be added to our Momentum mailing list,

Love It or
Leave It
Believe it or not, many times, when I need to write

something, I feel completely uninspired. Anytime that

I’m left here staring at a blank screen, trying to think
about what to write about, I revert to the old standard:
What will be important while people are reading this?
So, for February, here’s my natural fallback: Love.
Yes, that commercially-dictated, red-and-pink-
and-white thing that we call Valentine’s Day is all
too quick in coming—stores are already looking like Follow
they were washed in Pepto Bismol and we are already Jordana
picking out cards and treats to hand out to everyone
and their brother.
Sarcastic much? Maybe. But I’ve always heard that
“love”, as much as we use it, should be reserved for
those people closest to us—our friends, our family,
even our pets. Not things. Not cupcakes. Not cars.
Not even (gasp!) football.
But one exception I’ll make.
You better love your job.
Are you miserable? Just staying where
you are to pay bills? I get it.Trust me, I get it.
I’ve been in that situation—the I-don’t-care-
where-or-how-but-I-need-to-get-some-
money-in-here place. Too many of us are in
that place now. And around one in every
10 of us don’t even have that option.
The thing is, this recession probably
isn’t going to end. Experts are saying we’re
now in the “new norm,” where jobs are
more competitive than they’ve ever been and
we—as employees, as bosses, as owners—have
to step up and be the best to survive.
So, my question is: In this new norm, are you
happy? Sure, you’re paying the bills and that’s a big
deal, but are you truly, head-over-heels, wan-
na-send-your-career-a-Valentine in love? If
you’re not, what would it take to make that
happen? A completely different career? Go-
ing back to school? Leaving? Doing your
own thing?
Oh, but no, you say…that’s too scary. In this
economy that’s a probable death sentence.
Maybe, but a word of warning: All too often, the best
and brightest are dimmed by the shade around them. Sure, it’s
a scary world out there. But don’t let that darkness affect you
and what you can offer the world. After all, companies are born
regardless of economy—and those who love what they do are far
more likely to make it work.
Procter & Gamble and GE both started in the financial up-
heaval of 1837, and GM started amidst the Panic of 1907. Hewlett
Packard came out of the Great Depression.
The fact is that Genius is born out of Need. And there’s a whole
lot of that out there now.
Don’t laugh. It could happen. And it could be you.
