TECHNICAL APPLICATION NARRATIVE

Section One (1)- Overview of organization and Value Chain

The Kall’s Global Investment Limited is an umbrella Farming organization formed in 2016 as self
empowerment program comprising of one coordinated group within Njama community, Kowa
chiefdom. This organization members are seriously engaging on vegetable, Rice, Maize, G/nut,
Cow Pea, Pigeon Pea, Sorghum and Benni sales some of produce at periodic (Lumurs) Markets
in the chiefdoms in Moyamba, town Markets, Bo City Markets, and Freetown city Markets. The
main Base of the organization is Njama, Moyamba district.

The Kall’s Global Investment Limited comprises of only one group for now but planning to
incorporate more groups within the organization , who have not receive any support from any
organization but as an effective and self motivated groups we have doing several crops
cultivations and marketing. The group has since developed into production and marketing, an
umbrella organization coordinating/managing and monitoring the activities of the twenty-five
members within the group.

The Kall’s Global Investment Limited was purely working on rice production and marketing, also
buying viable seeds for its members within the district. Also the organization has been securing
loans for its members to increase production.

The Rice, Cassava and Sweet Potato project will focus on the production, processing and
marketing of Rice, Cassava and sweet potato, as the project time period and beyond the project
time for sustainability.

Alongside the rice, Cassava and sweet potato project since we are well grounded in vegetable
production therefore we will also embark in the production of vegetable like: hot pepper, Chili
pepper, sweet pepper, eggplant, squash, okra, tomatoes, spring onion, bulb onion, bitter balls,
etc and market it at Moyamba markets (Lumurs and town markets), Moyamba Junction market,
Freetown City Markets and Bo Town city markets. However, our organization also promotes
other crops such as Groundnut, Pigeon Pea, Cow Pea, Benni, Sorghum and maize.

Over the past two years the Kall’s Global Investment Limited members have benefited from
series of trainings ranging from Farmer Field School trainings on improved best practices in the
production of the above mentioned value chain crops, Governance, store management
Agribusiness and Financial management skills, Proper record Keeping abilities, Quality control
techniques, and value adding skills through technical support from NGOs and Ministry of
Agriculture and Forestry MAF. This has made members of the Kall’s Global Investment Limited

4
has become experts in farming as a business with successful records of contract management,
attractive record of quality control and value addition, increased production and productivity..
Together we produce and average 1,317 tons of rice per annum under normal circumstances.

Our organization has the following Assets: over 60 hectares of land and labour force.

Our potential partners for this business are the Traders and Drivers Union in Moyamba, Bo and
Freetown, Lumurs, School pupils, community people, workers in VIMETCO, Sierra Rutile
company Limited, traders etc. Competitors are the traders from Bo of our products and limited
internal products from individual cassava and sweet potato farmers in Moyamba, Tonkolili, Bo
and Western Area. However, our organization has competitive advantage in two folds: 1.Our
cassava and sweet potato well be principally cultivated with organic manure that gives natural
flavor, rich in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients. 2. We have a well-structured production
base organized to ensure uninterrupted supplies throughout the year with improved
mechanized supply system through which we can meet market demand providing fresh quality
products far cheaper than those coming from the other district ones and other limited sources.

SECTION 2- VALUE CHAIN ACTORS AND VALUE ADDED

Input Suppliers-Raw materials

The Kall’s Global Investment Limited will generate large quantities of raw materials (75% from
its farm produce and externally sources additional 25% raw materials from other farmer groups
within, individual farmers in Moyamba.

The organization depends on self source of contributions from members for sourcing of
additional raw materials (35%) such as improved high yielding varieties of rice, assorted cassava
cuttings and sweet potato vanes; pulses (cow Pea, Pigeon Pea and Maize).

TRANSPORT/STORAGE
Our organization works in partnership with the Moyamba district Drivers and Motorbike Riders
Union for the hiring of Vehicle and Motorbikes to distribute/transport our farm products to and
from remote communities, periodic markets and to our partners in big towns and cities . Also,
we convey improved high yielding varieties of seeds/planting materials from other Input
suppliers to our operational location.

5
VALUE ADDITION
The following value adding activities are undertaken by our organization for which labour cost is
paid to members and non-members whose services are hired.

1. Cleaning of the products by local method winnowing is done by women experts who
ensure that the rice, maize, g/nut, pulses and benni are clean of all foreign matter such as
dried leaves, stone etc.
2. Processing- this is done through milling services, drying facilities that are offered by the
organization to members and individual farmers in the communities and neighboring.
3. Sorting of products such as vegetables and pulses are usually done by members as a way
of differentiating the damaged or low quality ones from the best quality ones. This is
usually done by our organization to enhance better pricing determination system
4. Packaging is normally done by labour service of members who will do the packing in
crates jute bags, 50kg bags baskets etc. the organization caters for the packaging
materials and payment of labour in cash.

END-USERS/MARKETING
Our potential partners for this business are the Traders and Drivers Union in Moyamba,
Tonkolili, Bo and Freetown for the sale of gari, rice etc. Other value chain partners include: WFP
for the sale of polish rice and Pigeon Peas, Benni mix for the sale of benni (sesame), sorghum
and Pigeon Pea, Pa Abass Jah Poultry Farm for the sale of Maize, Our organization also supplies
all periodic markets in Moyamba. , Tonkolili city markets, Bo city markets and Freetown city
markets on wholesale and retail outlets. With vegetable, rice, cow pea, groundnut. The
movement/transportation of these goods involves hiring of Okada to transport the goods from
remote areas to communities that are accessible to vehicle and transportation to big cities also
requires hiring of public transports to meet Ends -Users/markets. The cost of transportation is
still a complex and critical challenge in our value chain promotion because cost of transport
varies from one system of transportation to another and from individual to individual
transporters and from place to place. The transportation cost to the interior point of the district
triples because of the poor road network and low traffic of vehicles compared to that going to
the big cities of Tonkolili, Makeni, Freetown and Bo.

6
Since Sierra Leone is slowly emerging from the Ebola Virus Disease that has resulted in massive
destruction of the agricultural industry and total disruption of livelihoods, in the entire country
especially the Kall’s Global Investment Limited . Agricultural productivity has started gaining
momentum, but rice production is still facing numerous constraints mainly because of
inadequate and sustainable production and storage systems in both the highly producing
communities and the urban centers. Post harvest losses are increasing becoming unbearable
for rice growers and as such vegetable growers are now seeking alternative crops that have
prolonged shelf life and can be form in various products.

Moyamba District is naturally endowed with good soil fertility and favorable climate for
growing of rice, Cassava and sweet potato.

The economic importance of Cassava and Sweet potato is eminent among which are:-

 The leaves are eaten as palava source.

 The tubers are generally boiled and prepared in many ways.
 The nutritional value of edible fresh tubers is very high in water, calories, protein,
carbohydrate, fat, fiber, calcium, phosphorous and iron etc.
 It could be grown two times per year in Moyamba (see activity plan attached)
 It is luxurious goods in Sierra Leone and therefore very expensive during special festivals
such as Christmas, Pray days, Ceremonials marriages etc therefore generate a lot of income
for the farmers.
 It can immensely contribute to the socio- economical sustainability of the farm families .
 It could be use as a start up food for six months old children.
 The shelf life of cassava and sweet potato when it form into product like gari, starch, tor etc
is longer than most vegetables grown in Sierra Leone.
 In terms of Agricultural sector objectives these mean giving priority to increasing
production so as to reduce imports and increase exports of the major cash crops.
 Cassava and sweet potato are economically important crops to most growers in the sub
region.

7

growing of Rice, Cassava and Sweet Potatoes in the district. In addition the manager and
secretary of the organization are trained and qualified on Rice, cassava and sweet potatoes
production.

The Kall’s Global Investment Limited also works closely with the District Agricultural Officer who
always gives technical advice and offers technical assistance as and when the need arises.
Presently the District Agricultural Officer is the key player in monitoring all activities carried out
by the organization in the district. In a bid to strengthen the capacity of the management of the
project, we hope to hire the services of the technical personnel from the Ministry of Agriculture
and Forestry in the district, in giving technical advices and training of the beneficiaries in the
chiefdom.

10
PROJECT FEASILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY

The Kall’s Global Investment Limited has over 25 farmers working together to emancipate them
from the vicious cycle of poverty. The farmers are involved in the cultivation of a variety of
crops, like rice, hot pepper, Sorghum, which are faced with numerous challenges and storage
facilities are not available. Diversification in the rice and other will help the farmers’ growers to
break even, simply because of the prolonged shelf life of rice, cassava and sweet potatoes when
process in various products and very expensive in the market. Moyamba with its natural
endowment, good soil fertility and favorable climatic conditions will lead to successful
implementation of the project.

The sustainability of the project will strongly be linked with the marketing strategies and
structures that will be put in place. Project participants will be encouraged to promote
Voluntary Savings through Accumulative Savings and Credit Association ASCA. Marketing
linkages will be created and sales from the cassava and sweet potatoes will be injected into the
ASCA so as to increase the lending capacity for all project beneficiaries. Funds generated will be
used in developing Sinava of Moban and Mbawoma Farmers Association and reaching new
beneficiaries in other communities.
