Writing and Naming Chemical Compounds
HOW TO USE THIS MODULE
Before you start answering the Supplementary Learning Material
(SLeM), I want you to set aside other tasks that will disturb you from enjoying
the lessons. Read the instructions carefully below to successfully achieve the
objectives of this kit. Have fun!
1. Follow carefully all the contents and instructions indicated in every part
of this SLeM.
2. Write in your notebook the concepts about the lessons. Keep in mind
that writing develops and enhances learning.
3. Perform all the provided activities in the SLeM.
4. Let your facilitator/guardian assess your answers.
5. Analyze conceptually the post-test and apply what you have learned.
6. Enjoy studying!

PARTS OF THIS MODULE

Expectations This SLeM provides what you will be able to know after
completing the lessons.

Pre-test This assesses your prior knowledge and the concepts to

be mastered throughout the lesson.

Looking Back This section measures the skills that you learned and
to your Lesson understand from the previous lesson.

Looking Back
In module 2, you have learned the chemical & physical properties of common
compounds and their economic uses. Let us see if you can still recall the concepts discussed
in the last module.
To refresh, let’s do a simple activity. Below are pictures of common
chemicals for you to identify and answer what is asked for in column two. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Brief Introduction
The common chemicals that we mentioned earlier are very useful in our everyday life.
There are lots of chemicals that we encountered in our daily living. It is interesting to know
how these compounds are classified and named in different ways.

A. Classifications of Compounds

Compound Definition Examples

Binary Compound (Two
nonmetals)
N2O – Dinitrogen oxide or
Binary Compounds containing
Nitrogen (II) oxide
two different elements. It is
PCl3 - Phosphorous trichloride
classified as binary compounds

B. Chemical Nomenclature or Chemical System

Chemical
Definition Examples
Nomenclature/System
A way to name a chemical
because each systematic name
Systematic Name identifies exactly one chemical. N2O – Nitrogen (II) oxide
(IUPAC Name) or Roman numerals (enclosed
Stock name parentheses) was used to CaS – Calcium Sulfide
represent oxidation number.

A nomenclature system useful

Common Name N2O – Dinitrogen oxide
or Classical System for naming simple organic
molecules. Greek prefixes were N2O4 – Dinitrogen tetroxide
used to indicate number of
atoms present in a compound.

Notes: 1. The prefix mono- is omitted for the first element. Ex. N2O
2. The ending -a of the prefix is omitted when the next letter in the name is
a vowel. Ex. N2O4

Below are summarize guidelines and examples that will help you in naming
compound.

Case First Name Last Name Examples

Case I
Consisting of a group Name of metal Stem of NaBr – Sodium bromide
a metal and a nonmetal +-ide Al2O3 - Aluminum oxide
nonmetal

Case II
Consisting of two Name of nonmetal Stem of CO2 – Carbon dioxide
nonmetals nonmetal +-ide N2O4 - Dinitrogen
Tetroxide
Case III Systematic Name
Consisting of a /Stock System Stem of FeCl2 – Iron(II) Chloride
transition metal Name of metal with nonmetal +-ide FeCl3 – Iron(III) Chloride
variable oxidation oxidation number in
number and a parenthesis
nonmetal
Common Name/ Stem of FeCl2 – Ferrous chloride
Classical System nonmetal +-ide FeCl3 – Ferric Chloride
Name of the metallic
ion (usually in Latin)

Case IV
Consisting of metal Name of metal Name of NaHCO3 - Baking Soda
and a polyatomic ion polyatomic ion or Sodium bicarbonate
(NH4)3PO4 – Ammonium
Phosphate

4
Case V Systematic Name Name of
Consisting of a /Stock System polyatomic ion Fe2(SO4)3 - Iron(III)
transition metal and a Name of metal with sulfate
polyatomic ion oxidation number in
parenthesis
Name of Fe2(SO4)3 - Ferric sulfate
Classical System polyatomic ion
Name of the metallic
ion (usually in Latin)
Case VI Stem of HF – hydrogen fluoride
Consisting of Hydrogen nonmetal + -ide
hydrogen and a Stem of nonmetal + HF – hydrofluoric acid
nonmetal -ic acid

Hydro Stem polyatomic H2SO4 - sulfuric acid

Consisting of ion + -ous/-ic acid HNO2 - nitrous acid
hydrogen and a
polyatomic ion Stem polyatomic H2SO3 - Hydrogen
Hydrogen + -ite/ate sulfite
HNO3 - Hydrogen
Nitrate
Notes: 1. In the Stock system, the oxidation number of the metal is written in Roman
numerals.
2. In the classical system, the ending - ous and – ic in the metal ion correspond to
the lower oxidation and higher oxidation numbers, respectively.
3. In polyatomic anions contain oxygen (oxyanions), the ending – ite and – ate in
the oxyanions correspond to the one with less oxygen and with more oxygen,
respectively.
