Expectations
In this module you are expected to write, and name compounds based on their
classifications.
Specifically, this module will help you to:
1. Differentiate between binary compounds and tertiary compounds;
2. Write and name chemical compounds correctly; and
3. Describe some effects of chemical compounds in our community and
environment.
Pre-Test
DIRECTIONS: Read each question carefully. Choose and write the correct answer on
another sheet of paper.
4. Which of the following is the CORRECT systematic name of Ferric oxide, Fe2O3?
A. Diferric oxide C. Iron (II) oxide
B. Triferric oxide D. Iron (III) oxide
5. In making dough, Nora used baking soda (NaHCO3). What is the other name for baking
soda?
A. Sodium hydrogen carbon C. Sodium hydrogen carbonate
B. Sodium carbonate D. Sodium bicarbonate
Looking Back
In module 2, you have learned the chemical & physical properties of common
compounds and their economic uses. Let us see if you can still recall the concepts discussed
in the last module.
To refresh, let’s do a simple activity. Below are pictures of common
chemicals for you to identify and answer what is asked for in column two. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Brief Introduction
The common chemicals that we mentioned earlier are very useful in our everyday life.
There are lots of chemicals that we encountered in our daily living. It is interesting to know
how these compounds are classified and named in different ways.
A. Classifications of Compounds

B. Chemical Nomenclature or Chemical System
Chemical
Definition Examples
Nomenclature/System
A way to name a chemical
because each systematic name
Systematic Name identifies exactly one chemical. N2O – Nitrogen (II) oxide
(IUPAC Name) or Roman numerals (enclosed
Stock name parentheses) was used to CaS – Calcium Sulfide
represent oxidation number.
Notes: 1. The prefix mono- is omitted for the first element. Ex. N2O
2. The ending -a of the prefix is omitted when the next letter in the name is
a vowel. Ex. N2O4
Below are summarize guidelines and examples that will help you in naming
compound.
Case II
Consisting of two Name of nonmetal Stem of CO2 – Carbon dioxide
nonmetals nonmetal +-ide N2O4 - Dinitrogen
Tetroxide
Case III Systematic Name

Activities
Activity 1.1 DICE-TO-DOTS NAME
Objective: Familiarize the names of compounds in different ways.
Material: dice with dots, scissor, pen, paste
Directions: Below are dice with symbols and formula. Cut the dice, put them together and
paste it on another sheet of paper. Write your answers on the blanks to complete the
statements below.

1. The compound names that contain 3 elements are _________________________ .
2. A compound that can be named in two different ways is _____________________ .
3. A compound name that contains two non-metals is _________________________.
4. A compound name that contains metal and non-metal is ____________________ .
K2 K Ag Na H C O3
C A H2 Na H Cu Cl2
O3 Fe S7 O Ag Ag Cl
P2 S Fe V V S4 O3

B O4 P4 H Cl O2 Mg
Remember
1. A systematic name is a name given in a systematic
way to one unique group, organism, object or chemical
substance, out of a specific population or collection.
(Source: Wikipedia)
2. The systematic name is determined by guidelines set
forth by the International Union of Pure and
Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
3. The table shows prefixes that are used to name a chemical
compound with two non-metals which is called
binary compound.
4. The prefix mono- is omitted for the first element.
5. The ending -a of the prefix is omitted when the next
letter in the name is a vowel.

Checking Your Understanding
A. LET’S REFLECT.
Directions: Write your reflections on a separate sheet of paper.
1. Two Important things I have learned from the topic
2. Two things that amazed me from the topics
B. TO KNOW BETTER.
Directions:
1. Detached two labels from the products that are commonly used at
home and paste them on a short bond paper.
2. Write the compound name used in the label.
3. Research the advantages and disadvantages of the compound.
4. Write your views about your research.
Post-Test
DIRECTIONS: Read each question carefully. Choose and write the correct answers on
another sheet of paper.
