Case Study # 3

A 32-year male motorcycle accident victim has

been on a respiratory ventilator for over several
weeks. He is suctioned and mucous collected for
a respiratory routine culture & sensitivity test.

Day 1 Culture Readout: A small amount of normal respiratory flora was isolated on
blood agar after overnight in a CO2 incubator at 35 ⁰C. However, a moderate growth
of an organism was isolated on MAC.

Rapid Test Results: Catalase

positive and oxidase negative

Isolated colonies are used to

Gram stain of bacterial colony
set up biochemical testing for Bacterial colonies
from MAC
read out the next day. isolated on MAC
(Oil – 1000x total magnification)

Record the results
for the following
biochemical tests

negative) in the
chart provided.
