ATC’s & ACEO’S ATC - ARTIST TRADING CARDS
These are traded for other cards and are not sold
WHAT IS THIS NEW EXPLODING ART FORM
AND WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? ACEO - ART CARD EDITIONS AND ORIGINALS
Recently there has been a resurgence of an old art form called Made to sell may be original or print
ATC or “Artists Trading Cards”. You may have seen these
2.5”x3.5” cards around, perhaps pieces being posted online or Finished canvas size is 2.5”x3.5” (6.4x8.9cm)
in person or maybe you have passed them in your local art store Each piece should be signed, dated and numbered if part
and wondered about these small canvases. Well, let me fill you of a series. Contact information may also be included.
in on the latest art craze!

A little history …
ATC’s can be traced back as early as the 1920’s in the Dadaist
movement but it’s roots are from the 1960’s Mail Art movement,
making them small enough to fit into an envelope and mail
anywhere in the world, but ATC really became popularized in
1997 when a Swiss artist named M. Vanci Stirnemann held a
1200 piece show and invited other artists to come and swap with
him by bringing a card of their own. Some of those in attendance
went on to continue this style of artwork and the art trading
cards began to spread.

As a result of it’s popularity many artists wanted to be able to

make these cards available to the public that had no ability to
trade and began to sell them at affordable prices therefore
bringing their art to the masses and to those who couldn’t afford
to commission larger pieces. ACEO or “Art Card, Editions and
Originals”, was then established. With the signing and dating of
these miniature pieces of art, ACEO’s are now becoming highly
collectable in the art world, growing at a rate of 10% increase in
popularity each year.

You can now get all kinds

of accessories for your
cards including: mats,
frames, sleeves, envelopes
and even display stands!

ATC Cards come in a variety of papers and colors,

from mini canvas’, to different colors and textures

More and more art suppliers are getting involved to help you
along, such as Strathmore and Crescent’s line of Trading Card
products, which include different types and colored papers,
sleeves, envelopes and even miniature mats and frames.

Creating Artist Trading Cards / ATC’s
by Autumn Ford aki--art.com

Materials Used:

ATC Cards
Masking Tape
Thin or Tracing Paper Next, I taped my cards together and lightly taped the whole

my thumbnail drawing, I planned out my image by sketching

Pick your paper! There are many different types of paper offered
in ATC standard size of 2.5”x3.5”. In this case I chose a Smooth
Bristol, as I prefer a smooth surface. I find I it easier to blend my
colors, and it gives the artwork a softer look than textured paper.

I used some photos

The tricky part to

each canvas can stand
alone as a piece of art.

to oversaturate it or it will buckle

project.

mastery of colored pencil 5 Techniques you can try...

“Tiger In Color Pencil” by Naomi Eastment

1) Indent your surface before drawing.
You can use any sharp object that would indent your surface without
scratching or damaging the paper. Some use knitting needles as you can
get them in a variety of sizes or use a hard white pencil like a Verithin

with over 1,000 members strong. Their collection of or thick paper. It give just enough indentation on your surface that your

You will need to carefully plan and really being paying attention to your
piece as it is easy to mess up but is also a good technique for purists.
Works best when surrounding colors are solid. If you have a pattern or
a variety of colors on both sides of the hair it can be more challenging to
match up.

4) Use Paint, Ink or a White Gel Pen.

“Hoop Dreams Pete Maravich” by Jeremy Osborne

Everyone seems to have their favorite over paint. White acrylic paint has
been a proven way to get that bright white on top of your colored pencil
piece and of course you can vary your line width depending on your
brush so get a more natural whisker than a static pen can offer.

5) Erase.
This seems impossible but many successfully use an erasing shield and
some swear by an electric eraser.

Please try this tips on your own to see which works best for you. You
should first try them on a practice sheet using the same paper and colors
coloredpencilartists.deviantart.com you are going to be working on.

Tribute Art
Making a Difference with your Talent
by Dean M Rogers
This is a very special piece, and here is the amazing story behind it...
Stacey is a two-time cancer survivor. She was diagnosed at the age of
20 with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is a rare kind of
cancer that attacks the lymph nodes, usually from the base of the chin,
downward through the body, spreading at a VERY rapid rate all the
way to the pelvis, going through 4 stages before it spreads into the bone
marrow, which is its final stage, stage 4b. The fact that it is so aggressive
and spreads so fast actually makes it one of the most curable kinds of
cancer there is. Because it “eats up” chemotherapy as quick as it does
cells, it shrinks fast with treatment. She was in stage 3b - the cancer
had spread from her neck to her spleen in about 6 months. She was
administered chemotherapy for 5 months, and then had radiation for
another 2. She lost her hair, could not leave her house, and could not
attend school for a nearly a year, for fear of infection or virus, the cause
of death for a lot of cancer patients. She continued to work at home
and, thanks to her sister, still graduated in 4-1/2 years. Recently another
cancerous tumor in her salivary gland was discovered that had to be
removed, which was most likely caused by the radiation treatment.
Stacey wanted to be a strong character in this piece - and so we
decided on a superhero theme. Many many thanks to Stacey for posing
for me and for letting me share her story. Once you discover someone
who has been through something like this, it makes you think about “Survivor Girl”

This is the second in a series of “world changing” art

that Melissa has posed for. This is also my tribute to the
firefighters and my memorial to 9/11. I waited a long
time to do it, but felt that this was the right time. I hope
that this piece is powerful and meaningful. I think that
I achieved the exact expression I wanted - as if she is
looking up at the heavens, and asking “did I do a good
job - is it over now?” I am extremely happy with it.

Anna Marine
A Anna Marine was born in Moscow on March 10th but she spent
almost her entire childhood in the Czech Republic, Europe. Her
surname, Marine, came from her grandfather who was a frenchman
that emigrated to Russia in 1949. (“Marine” means “sea” in French).

Anna has been drawing since early childhood and as far as she can
remember she has almost always had pencils and brushes in-hand
anna-marine.com

but she had considered “art” to be a hobby and nothing more.

She has profoundly studied mythology, history and astronomy
and began incorporating her studies with her art. Her inspiration
comes from the gothic architecture of Old Prague, its history,
legends, and the city’s ancient cemeteries. Her fascination with sad
angels, wreaths of withering colors on heads, ancient crypts, and

silence, have always intrigued her and she frequently finds herself
taking walks through cemeteries to get inspired. On any given
day you can find Anna at the cemetery reading about Irish and
English legends about phantoms, vampires, ghosts and mermaids
in languages such as French, Romanian, Czech and English; all
of which are books she collects. To her, books are magic and
they are the inspiration for which she transfers to paper through
her amazing talent. Her hard work garners frequent offers from
publishing houses and writers.

A PROFILE

In 2009 her artwork was featured in the book “Amazing Pencil

Color pencils are a unique material. Even beginning artists
can work with it. Moreover, I recommend it to beginning
artists because it will help them to learn to put in strokes,
correctly, how much pressure to use on the pencil and of
course, incorporating color into your art. Many beginning
artists prefer to buy one huge sets of pencils with 120 colors
because they think that it will help them to work with colors.
I think this is a delusion, after all, in the big sets many shades
of colors are similar and is not necessary. My biggest set of
pencils consists of 60 colors, and somewhere around 10 have
never been used. Don’t forget that it is possible and necessary
to mix to get the right color. There are different kinds of
color pencils and I probably have tried the majority of them,
selecting several as favorites ...Faber-Castell watercolor
pencils are good because can be dissolved by water, and
can soften your image when necessary, Derwent Inktense
Pencils perfectly mix up by themselves, and any color used
in conjunction with their white pencil of the same series, give
a velvet effect. I also have a small box of Derwent Graphitint
Pencils only dark colors that are dissolved with water too and
give effect of brightness and depth of color. And small set of
Derwent Drawing pencils, with their structure similar to a
soft pastel, are necessary when you need strong, juicy dark
colors and gentle light colors.
As for paper.. my choice is Canson. I have paper for a
water color, it’s thick and a rough (coarse-grained), and paper
for sketches and pencil drawings, it more smooth and soft
because I don’t like to see a paper texture in my finished
work. I hope that my advice was useful for you. Do not afraid
to expess yourself and make this world brighter!
Good luck!
