Fourth Long Summative Assessment:

I. Ideology in Media
FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano, the alleged leading primetime series in the nation starring Coco
Martin and other prominent actors is a remake of the 1997 Philippine action film by Fernando
Poe Jr. Though the story was altered to fit this current period which aims to let more audience
relate to the show, it still tackles on social issues of national relevance prevalent regarding
Philippine legislative issues, more specifically, concerning the Philippine National Police. FPJ’s
Ang Probinsyano follows the story of Ador who was killed during a police operation due to the
betrayal of a kindred officer which has led his superior to devise a plan which involves Kardo,
the long-lost twin brother of Ador to take action. Kardo, a provincial cop is tasked to capture the
drug syndicates and the corrupt policemen responsible for Ador’s death by assuming his identity.
Ador’s journey to joining the national police academy had given the audience the idea of
what the trainees go through before being able to call themselves police of the nation which does
not deviate from the real-life experiences that aspirants go through. It had shown the hardships
and hard training that policemen face in their training days which takes courage and
perseverance to complete. However, as there may be police officers who are brave and loyal to
the nation, there are also policemen who are shown as corrupt and selfish beings who only thinks
of their own welfare which would definitely coincide with reality.
The series have shown how the Philippine justice system works without sugarcoating the
narrative and actual events within the government. It has exposed the present system of justice in
the country which is too slow and far too lenient especially when it comes to the wealthy. Too
often the punishment given to criminal offenders does not fit the crime committed. Nevertheless,
regardless of the process call criminal justice, the show still provide hope to its audience that
there are still people who continue to serve with discretion, conviction, and devotion.
With the character of Cardo, the show imparts to its audience a meaningful message
which gives hope in spite of the harsh reality when it comes to justice. It debunks the stereotypic
idea that all police officers are corrupt and selfish, only with the intention of attaining self-
prosperity. Through the series, it suggests that there are still respectable and honorable officers
capable of doing their duties without being dishonest. That with even with the situation of how
inequality arises, justice would still prevail. Additionally, FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano remains a
show that mirrors the values of a Filipino such as our unconditional love for family, importance
of honesty, friendship and etc. Therefore, with this ideology, people may be given light that there
is still hope in achieving hope. Some may accept this and rely on those who are brave to fight for
what is right. However, it is to be expected that some people would not just sit and watch idly as
the wrongdoings happen before their eyes.
II. Alternative Media
As defined by Globalization101, globalization is “a process of interaction and integration
among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven
by international trade and investment and aided by information technology.” Given this
definition, when applied to the Philippine Media Industry, I believe that it would surely have its
advantages and disadvantages depending on the manpower and capital of a given market.
Furthermore, technology has likewise been driving globalization since it allows for quick
communication, transport, and mass marketing, greatly contributing to a globalized marketplace.
There are 3 concepts of how globalization may affect the Philippine Media Industry.
Firstly, the domestic media would be overwhelmed by the transnational media giants
whose products would be produced and sold everywhere. Surely it would affect the income
generated by the local media since the mass would favor what is new and is imported. It would
be challenging for the local media to be able to compete with those from the global networks.
Therefore, this situation would deem favorable for the transnational media giants while it would
result otherwise for the local media giants. Secondly, if the local media giants are not competing
with the transnational media giants, they are offered the solution of collaborating with them.
With this, they are able to create a vertically integrated company which is a combination of one
or two firms normally operated by separate firms. By doing so, the speed ability of these
enterprise to react to currents events and trends would surely be faster. Different branches of a
firm would be able to disseminate information at a higher speed and wider range of scope.
Therefore, this would mean a win-win situation for both domestic media and global media since
both would be able to produce better results. Lastly, local media giants may use this opportunity
to promote products at a global scale which would result to additional income. An example of
this would be the movie Titanic, considering its income from domestic advertising it had
achieved a higher gross income of the movie because it was able to reach a global scale. Being
able to advertise their own media globally have surely contributed to the success of their product.
In conclusion, globalization may affect the Philippine Media Industry either in a good or
bad way depending on how the media giants strategize on how to generate more income. This
may serve as a blessing or a curse on the Philippine Media Industry and it all depends on how we
can make use of the opportunity.
