Based on the novel that I have studied which is The Elephant Man written by
Tim Vicary, the novel is about a disfigured man with a terrible disease who
suffers humiliation and finds happiness later in life. The main characters of the
novel are Joseph Merrick and Dr Frederick Treves.
Joseph Merrick also known as the Elephant Man, he has a huge head with very
little hair and skin hanging down from the neck, face and back. His right hand is
like a man’s foot but his left hand is beautiful like a young lady. His legs are big
and fat while his back is crooked. Merrick was discovered by Dr Treves at 25
years old and died at 31 years old. He loves reading and talking about books.
Merrick is a friendly person as he can make friend easily with people and
animals, many visitors enjoy talking with him. He is also simple-minded and
childlike as he will do what he is told without asking questions. Merrick also
believes the characters in the books are real and the story at the theatre is
true, he even wonders what the characters do after the play is over. He is also
very intelligent as the was given away to Silcock at a young age hence he
probably did not have the chance to study, but he is still able to read and enjoy
books while write good letters.
Dr Frederick Treves is a doctor at the London Hospital who also the narrator of
the story. He helps Merrick to get a home and introduce him to society to help
Merrick to have a more normal life. He is a smart man as he told the postman
that Merrick is a lady to evade his suspicious. Dr Treves is also a kind-hearted
man as he will visit Merrick and talks to him every day. He also introduces his
young woman friend to Merrick. Dr Treves is also very helpful in finding way to
get money for helping Merrick and make arrangement for Merrick to fulfil his
wish to go to the countryside.
