Stand By Me: A classic revisited

Hands down, I think this is one of the most touching and heartfelt movies I have ever
watched in my lifetime. I watched it in my English class at Melbourne High School. I
tip my hat to Rob Reiner, for the true-to-heart and insightful experiences into the life of
a typical twelve-year-old through the characters of Chris Chambers (River Phoenix),
Gordie Lachance (Will Wheaton), Teddy Duchamp (Corey Feldman) and Vern Tessio
(Jerry O’Connell). This movie boasts an abundance of themes such as friendship,
prejudice and the ‘harsh’ reality of life and death which has been exposed to these four
characters. The characters have a powerful sense of comradery together, but also do
things a typical teenager would do for example tease each other and have banter.

What this movie does is it takes you back in time to a place where friendship was purer
and meant more to an individual than it means now. I have watched this film time and

time again. It leaves me sad, grateful and happy at the same time. These feelings stay
with you for at least a day before wearing off. That is a sign of a well-directed movie. It
stays with you. After all, the quality isn’t dependent on the amount of money spent, but
actually the people who make it. You can’t help but get a sense of nostalgia while
watching this film. I like this film personally because of how much you can relate at
least one character to a time in your life. Also, when you are a teen and you and your
friends go through a tough situation together, you will always remember that situation
and the friends that helped you get through it. The acting is amazing, especially relaxed
feel of all the characters. This movie also shows how Gordie and Chris transition from
being an immature child to understanding the world and having an epiphany moment.
Overall, I think this film is spectacular due to the amazing storyline and terrific acting. I
would recommend this film to anyone who wants to watch a true-to-heart, coming-of-
age film.
