Lecture No 09
Semester: 3rd A
Civil Engineering Technology (BSETCV)

Subject Title
MECHANICS OF SOLID
(MOS)
Slope and Deflection of Beams
Relation between slope deflection and radius of
curvature.

CLO-2
CONTENTS
At the end of this lecture students will be able to understand:

• Bending of Beam
• Bending Stresses in Beam
• Assumptions for simple Bending Theory of
Beam
• Derivation of Flexure Formula
• Section Modulus
Introduction
Introduction
Deflection
• Deflection/Displacement
The vertical displacement from neutral axis of deflected beam
is called deflection/displacement “y”

The vertical distance in transverse direction between positions of

axis before and after loading at the section of the beam, is
defined as the deflection of beam at that section.
Slope
• Slope/Rotation
The angle or slope of deflected beam at any point is called
slope/rotation “ϴ”

The slope of the beam at any section is defined as the angle (in
radians) of inclination of the tangent drawn at that section to the
axis in its deflected position after loading, measured w. r. t. the
undeformed axis.
Assignment
1. Differentiate between slope and deflection of beam
2. What is the importance of slope and deflection of
beam

 Submitted on very next lecture. No excuse will be accepted.
