MICROSTRUCTURE ANALYSIS OF CAST IRON USING

IMAGE ANALYSER
Aim:

To identity the specimen by capturing the image through camera and to find
the grain size, distance between the particles and flake length.

Apparatus required:

Grinding machine, double disc polishing machine, emery papers, Trinocular

microscope with CCD camera, TV monitor, Image analyzer software.

Etchant used ……………………………………

Procedure:

 The properly prepared metal specimen is kept under the metallurgical

microscope on the specimen table.
 The objective lens is chosen to get the required magnification for capturing
the image.
 The light source is switched on.
 The metal specimen is focused by adjusting draw tube using coarse and fine
adjustment screws.
 The microstructure of the metal obtained can be seen through the eyepiece.
 After obtaining the correct image, the camera can be enabled by releasing
the knob which is just below the eye piece.
 Double click CAMERA CAPTURE - View 7 icon for capturing the image.
The image captured by the camera (3 Mega pixels) can be transferred to the
system for further analysis.
 The image is analyzed to obtain the size of particles, porosity, area of the
particle, perimeter of the particle etc…

2. Write the steps involved in the orientation of the particle?

3. What do you mean by porosity?

4. What is the type of flake you observe in Grey Cast Iron?

5. What do you mean by 2% nital.

Post Lab questions

1. Mention the maximum size of the particle for SG Iron you have
observed.

2. What is the perimeter of particle chosen for analysis?
