Experiment 1
Chemical Changes

1. What type of process and/or chemical change is observed in 1, 2, 3, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 5?
1 – Double displacement
2 – Decomposition
3 – Double displacement
4.1 – Single replacement (redox)
4.2 – Synthesis
4.3 – Single Replacement
5 – Synthesis (Oxidation)
2. Why must zinc be added gradually to the solution in procedure 4.1?
Adding zinc to the solution will result in a reaction with copper ions to produce metallic copper.
This reaction gives off a lot of heat (exothermic) which makes the beaker hot to the touch that is
why it is important to gradually add the zinc to the solution.
3. What is the purpose of the test using ammonia solution?
The purpose of the test using ammonia solution is to test for the completeness of the reaction
which means that the zinc is completely mixed with copper (II).
4. Why must HCl be added to the solid after the reaction with zinc dust is completed?
HCl must be added to the solid because the copper metal does not react under these conditions
thus, removing any unreacted zinc metal.
5. Why is it not advisable to dry the copper directly over the Bunsen flame?
It is not advisable to dry the copper directly over the Bunsen flame because hot copper will react
with oxygen in the air to form oxides of copper which produce impurities in the pure copper.
6. Calculate the percent recovery in the experiment. Does your result refute the Law of
Conservation of Matter? Explain.
The percent recovery in our experiment is 1.4% and it does not refute the Law of Conservation
of Matter. This law states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed. However, it can only be
transformed. Even though the copper transformed into different compounds, the reactions that
happened only involved a change in the arrangement of the atoms. Therefore, an element may
undergo several chemical reactions without losing any amount of its mass.
